Eve and Gene Black Summer Medical Career Program
By now I’m sure it’s a bit late to answer that question. I participated in the program in the summer of 2007. I have nothing but positive things to say about this program. It’s just great when you think about studying medicine. It gives you a pretty good idea of what the hospital environment is like. It is truly a privilege to be part of the program; Being a high school student and seeing all the things you make is just awesome! I remember seeing surgeries, deliveries, etc (the list is endless). The experience is definitely what you make of it, but regardless, it will help you decide if medicine is right for you. I thought about going into nursing and after completing the program I definitely knew it was something I wanted to go into. I am currently a junior BSN student and I know I owe a lot to the Gen Black program. To anyone thinking of applying, DO IT, you won’t regret the experience!!

Pediatric Society of Los Angeles
The Los Angeles Pediatric Society (LAPS) established the Eva and Gene Black Summer Medical Career Program in 1969 with the goal of encouraging high school students to choose a career in health care. The students, who describe themselves as the psychic mentoring program, are selected to work under the supervision of a health educator/medical facility coordinator at Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Hospital. Participants accompany different healthcare professionals (nurse, nutritionist, pharmacist, laboratory technician, doctor and/or specialist, etc.) who together provide a range of patient care services.
