Fusion Mineral Paint™ FAQ.

Because Fusion Mineral Paint™ is self-priming, a primer is generally not necessary, but a paint will only perform as well as the surface it is applied to. No matter what paint product you use, if you apply paint to an unstable surface, the paint will not adhere properly. Many surfaces have been previously finished with varnish or have a high gloss finish, so a little prep can make a world of difference when needed. It is always recommended to lightly sand your piece with 220 grit (medium) sandpaper before painting.

How durable is Fusion Mineral Paint?

Almost a year ago I painted the outside of the store in a custom mix of Fusion Midnight and Liberty Blue. It was a pure 50/50 mix. Fusion blends so well that creating a custom color is easy and simple. The color turned out beautifully and it looks great with the signage.

Did I use a conversion primer?

I get asked that a lot as the shop was originally painted with oil paint. First, let’s quickly and easily go through what a conversion primer is. When painting over oil based paint it is best to use a primer which will help the water based paint adhere to the oil paint. To achieve this conversion primers usually have an acrylic base for best adhesion and the good news is that Fusion is made from industrial grade acrylic so no additional product is needed. #to win

The preparation to get the exterior ready for painting was easy and quick. The paint was in good condition, chip free and completely intact, so we just washed it very well and let it dry. The custom blend was covered in 2 coats and felt dry quickly. The project took a full day from start to finish.

How well has Fusion held up?

My front door has a few stains but it’s the only way to get furniture in and out and I couldn’t guess how many pieces have gone through this door over the year! When the weather is nice I often put furniture outside of the shop so that it has some wear but the paint is still okay with no chips or dents in the finish. Fusion Mineral Paint is UV stable so won’t fade in the sun making it perfect for outdoor projects like garden sheds or maybe your front and back door. Even your flower pots could get the Fusion treatment.

Using Fusion outdoors.

All in all I would highly recommend using Fusion for your outdoor projects. The store exterior cost less than 2 pots so £43.98. This makes it much more economical than conventional facade paint. It was also a quick project. Imagine if you painted a front and back door you would only need 1 pot for that price you could change the color every year 😉

Every day I get asked these questions: “What’s the best paint?” and “What’s the difference between Fusion Mineral Paint and Annie Sloan Chalk Paint or Miss Mustard Seed’s Milk Paint?”

So the best place to start is to grab a coffee and look at the facts.

The main difference is that Fusion Mineral Paint is not chalk paint, it does not contain chalk.

Chalk paint and milk paint must be sealed after painting because they are very porous, which creates a barrier and prevents dust and dirt from the air and oil from hands from being absorbed.

Fusion Mineral Paint does not need to be sealed as it has a built in top coat. However, just like Chalk Paint, you can add colored wax to enhance your finish.

Both colors can wear down and acquire an aged appearance.

Fusion Mineral Paint is waterproof and washable, while chalk paint would need to have a lacquer-like finish to make it waterproof. Miss Mustard Seed milk color can also be used outdoors and can be left sealed or unsealed!

Both colors can be applied to most surfaces with minimal preparation.

Fusion Mineral Paint has an acrylic base and is not only washable but really scrubbable once fully cured making it a great choice when extra durability is required!
