Competitive riders in running and judging events do not meet often as their shows are usually held at different locations. However, there is one Georgia event that has brought together barrel racers, saddle seat, western pleasure and equitation riders from across the state – and has been for a half century.
The Georgia State Federation of Saddle Clubs show celebrated its 50th anniversary this year in its signature, dependable, understated style. There was no glossy presentation of the celebrations on the official website, no coverage in national publications – just a bunch of dusty, passionate, exhausted riders at the end of the weekend banding together to make it all happen again.
Wendell Hall, president of the Deep Dixie Horseman’s Association, the hosting organization of this year’s state show, said the event went smoothly. In fact, he said officials at the Georgia National Fairgrounds in Perry, Georgia, the state venue since 1993, told him that this year’s show was one of the smoothest events ever held there.
A volunteer effort
Anyone in Peach State who has attended a local saddle club show under the jurisdiction of their regional equestrian association knows that the Georgia State Federation of Saddle Clubs show each September is the ultimate destination. Riders work year-round to their regional federation’s guidelines to earn points through competition; At the end of the season, the top seven drivers from each event advance to the state show.
The regions, in turn, collect points during the state show weekend. This year, the Coastal Plains Association was the winner of the timed event. This association includes the following saddle clubs: Circle W, Ware County, Broken Spur, Diamond Bar D, Bit N’ Spur and Brantley County.
The Northwest Georgia Horsemans’ Association earned the highest scoring for the judged events and also the overall highest scoring award. The Northwest Association consists of The Bartow County, Paulding County and Lost Mountain Saddle Clubs.
Each regional event – and thus also the state show – offers a comprehensive range of courses for young people and adults. Hall said he thinks the overall experience is a good setup for youngsters looking to expand their show experience.

“It’s a training ground for the kids,” he says. “That’s where they start and then move on to the bigger shows.”
In fact, for many riders, the regional shows are the background noise between larger breed shows and running events. For others, they are the heart of their screening experience. Regardless of the orientation of the participants, everyone needs to show some level of commitment. As Hall explained, each State Show attendee is required to volunteer a set number of hours with their local association during the year and also during the State Show weekend.
Hall’s words to those attending the state shows in this year’s Semicentennial program reflected each individual’s commitment to representing their home saddle club and region:
“As a state qualifier, you have demonstrated the art of bonding between horse and rider,” he wrote. “They demonstrated the power, balance and rhythm of the horse with obedience and suppleness. It will also show your precision and accuracy as you and your horse complete a set course of strategically placed obstacles in the arena.”

Everyone is cordially invited to show themselves at our shows. Membership not required; However, if you wish to qualify for the state, you must become a member of one of the affiliated saddle clubs listed below.

Join an Affiliate Club: Lost Mountain, Bartow County. The NWGHA is a member of the Georgia Federation of Saddle Clubs, which hosts the annual state competition of equestrian athletes and their riders. Any saddle club that is a member of the NWGHA is authorized to enter competitors in the national competition.

Club Membership Requirements (this applies to all saddle clubs wishing to join the NWGHA)
Each club must be an active participating member.
Annual membership fee of $250.00
Attend monthly meetings. Each club must elect a representative to attend each meeting. This representative is responsible for keeping their club informed of ongoing events, keeping the club’s certified drivers informed of any requirements, and voting on any issues that arise on behalf of their club.
Help and support the NWGHA at local events and at the State Show.
Hosting shows in your area.
If you are hosting a show, sanctioning for your 1st show is included with membership. If you host additional shows, the sanction fee is $65 per show. $1 per entry per NWGHA point class must be paid to the NWGHA. Although these additional shows are optional, we recommend that each club host at least one per year. This brings income for your club, as well as a varied show atmosphere for the participants.
Personal requirements (this is for drivers who wish to qualify for the state with the NWGHA)
Have featured in at least 4 of the 6 qualifying shows.
Only the top 6 drivers (based on points) qualify.
Complete the certification form and provide a recent copy of a negative Coggins test on the horses you will be showing. The form will be kept by the Points Keeper to maintain your total points from all local shows.
Fulfill the volunteer hours per participant set by your saddle club. This includes time at local shows and at the State Show.
The acquisition of State Points is free except for local show class fees and optional horse/gate/arena fees charged by each park.
Once you qualify for the State Show based on your total points, you are responsible for the classes you will appear in at the State Show and your booth fees.
You are responsible for the accommodation of your choice. Limited RV camping is available on site at the Perry Agriculture Center.

Only organized clubs can join the NWGHA. Individual riders must be members of an NWGHA club to participate. Member clubs have the ability to offer their members the opportunity to compete at the national level that other clubs cannot offer.
