WORKING WITH YOUR BODY’S NATURAL FUNCTIONS

AQUALYX injections break down fat in a controlled manner so your body can safely remove it via its lymphatic system. This simple and effective procedure shrinks double chins and improves jawline definition. The treatment tightens the skin to reveal a tighter, more youthful appearance.

AQUALYX typically requires a course of two to four treatments with four to six week intervals between each session. Although the procedure isn’t painful, you should expect some swelling, which can take up to three weeks to go away. Although the fat will not come back, AQUALYX should only be used as an adjunct to a healthy lifestyle and is only intended to deal with small love handles and not to provide a complete weight loss solution.

Unlike liposuction, AQUALYX also usually results in some skin contraction, making you less likely to end up with sagging skin around the treated areas.

The introduction of fat-dissolving injections has excited many. Now we can finally get rid of stubborn fat that just won’t budge, no matter how hard we train or how healthy we eat.

Fat-dissolving injections can help you achieve a slimmer, more contoured physique, with results that last anywhere from two to four years. Results last even longer if you eat healthily and exercise regularly.

However, as with all new treatments, it’s important to understand exactly what’s involved before you rush yourself. Here’s everything you need to know about these convenient injections:

Fact – they are safe

Both of our Artisan fat-dissolving injection treatments contain natural substances. Our chin shaping injections contain a synthesized deoxycholic acid. This occurs naturally in the body and helps break down and absorb dietary fat. Meanwhile, our general fat-dissolving injections contain a substance called phosphatidylcholine (PC). Again, this is a natural compound derived from soybeans. Both are safe to use and are naturally broken down by the body over time.

Fact – side effects are rare

Side effects of both injectable treatments are rare. Swelling, bruising, itching, pain, tenderness and heat build-up may occur at the injection site, but this usually resolves within three to five days.

Minimize the risk by enlisting the help of a highly qualified doctor or nurse. At Artisan, all of our cosmetic injection treatments are performed by our team of highly qualified doctors and nurses. They are masters of their trade with many years of industry experience.

Fact – pain is minimal

As with all needle treatments, the injections may sting for a few seconds, but pain is generally minimal. We also always offer the option of applying a topical anesthetic to the treatment area to minimize discomfort.

Fact – there is downtime

The biggest thing to note about these forms of injectable treatments is that they require some downtime, with both treatments recommending three to five days of rest.

Fat-dissolving injections for the chin and jaw area

***The UK’s most experienced fat dissolving injection clinic with over a thousand sessions this year.

A double chin can occur at any age and does not only affect people who are overweight. The reason people end up with that sagging cheek of submental fat is often due to genetics or excessive skin laxity that can come with age.

The Aqualyx is injected into the fatty tissue, it encapsulates and destroys the fat cells with anti-inflammatory effects that are safely produced as waste by the body. This can be used to reduce fat cells in multiple areas of the face such as a double chin and fat around the jaw.

During each session, topical numbing cream is applied to the targeted area and patients are given multiple fat-dissolving injections (Aqualyx) in problematic areas around the chin and neck. A maximum dose is used in this procedure. This takes 15 minutes. The number of injections and sessions depends on the severity of the problem.

It usually requires at least two or three sessions spaced 6-8 weeks apart. Swelling can occur for 2-6 weeks.

The result is visible and permanent after 6-8 weeks.

Where does the fat go after fat dissolving injections?

The fat cells will then be naturally released and drained away by your lymphatic system, which is why we always recommend drinking plenty of water after your treatment and avoiding alcohol too. Your comfort is always a priority, and you won’t feel too much discomfort when receiving fat-dissolving injections.

Sometimes all the exercises in the world don’t target stubborn fat areas like your chin or hips. While liposuction is one fat reduction option, a non-surgical alternative is gaining popularity: Aqualyx. Read on to learn everything you need to know about Aqualyx fat dissolving injection side effects, treatment, and results.

What is Aqualyx?

Aqualyx is an injectable treatment that melts away stubborn fat. It is a non-surgical procedure that is minimally invasive. It is designed to reduce fat deposits under the skin without surgery.

The injectable is a gel-based solution that is biocompatible and biodegradable. It contains a substance known as deoxycholic acid and plant compounds that act on fat cells when injected.

Many people find it difficult to get rid of certain areas of fat. Some fat deposits just don’t seem to move no matter how well you eat or exercise. Non-surgical treatments like Aqualyx can be more attractive than, say, liposuction, especially if you want to avoid a lengthy recovery period. While liposuction is ideal for some patients, alternative treatments have several advantages. Aqualyx is often used to improve the contours of the body.

How does Aqualyx work?

During your procedure, Aqualyx will be injected into a stubborn area of fat by a trained doctor. The solution then adheres to fatty deposits. Over time, the fat deposits break down. Once the fat is dissolved, it is flushed out of your body through your urine and lymphatic system.

Aqualyx targets small love handles. Similar to liposuction, Aqualyx injections are not a means of weight loss. Instead, targeting fat in more isolated areas can help. For example, treating the inner thigh with Aqualyx would target that stubborn inner thigh area.

Who is a suitable candidate for Aqualyx injections?

If you are considering Aqualyx injections, you should not be pregnant, breastfeeding, or have any conditions that affect how your body processes fat.

A good candidate for an Aqualyx treatment has good skin elasticity. Skin elasticity refers to your skin’s ability to stretch and snap back into place. If you have poor skin elasticity, your skin may look saggy or wrinkled.

Aqualyx is designed for people with good skin elasticity to allow your skin to snap back into place after the fat has dissolved. If you have poor elasticity after the fat in the injected area dissolves, you could end up with sagging skin.

dr Riaz Agha explains the importance of skin quality in plastic surgery in more detail in the video below.

What happens at your Aqualyx treatment appointment?

An appointment lasts about an hour. On average, between 2 and 4 treatments are required. The injections should be given 3 to 6 weeks apart. The number of treatments you need depends on the target area.

Prior to your Aqualyx appointment at Harley Clinic, you will receive instructions on how to prepare for your appointment. For example, you must abstain from alcohol 24 hours before your treatment. Before the procedure, you will discuss your concerns and your doctor will determine if you are suitable for the procedure.

Your doctor will then take measurements and mark where the injections will be on the face or body. Following the fat-dissolving injections, you will receive follow-up instructions to ensure you get the best possible Aqualyx results.

Like many treatments that focus on removing or reducing fat, Aqulyx is not a substitute for weight loss. Instead, it’s a way to target stubborn areas of fat and improve your body’s contours by removing fat.

You may also be wondering if Aqualyx injections are painful? During your Aqualyx appointment, the solution will usually be mixed with an anesthetic. This means that it should be a relatively painless treatment. While there may be mild discomfort, many patients experience the injections as a mild stinging sensation for only a few seconds. Overall, most find the procedure to be straightforward and relatively painless.

Aqualyx aftercare

You don’t need much downtime after the treatment. Initially, bruising and swelling may occur. This takes up to 5 days to recover. In 6-9 days you will feel much more comfortable. Avoid applying cosmetics to the treated area and stay away from UV rays (sunbathing or solariums) for about 12 hours.

For the first week, it’s a good idea to avoid very strenuous exercise while your body is processing. Overall, however, Aqualyx recovery is straightforward, with many patients returning to work after their treatment.

You may need a slightly longer recovery time when applying Aqualyx on the body compared to the face. Your plastic surgeon may recommend wearing compression bandages to help the healing process.

Aqualyx swelling

Aqualyx works by stimulating an inflammatory response in your fat cells. While this is necessary for fat dissolution, it can cause significant swelling for up to 5 days. Depending on the area treated, more visible swelling may occur.

For example, if you have a double chin treatment, you may experience Aqualyx chin swelling. The chin is a difficult area to cover, so go for it; It’s a good idea to take up to 72 hours off from work and social events.

Swelling will occur after your Aqualyx treatment. It is normal for the swelling to increase in the first 24 to 48 hours. Typically, the swelling subsides over the following week and in very rare cases can last for more than a week. The swollen area may look a little uneven and feel uncomfortable at first.

After the swelling goes down you will start to see some small lumps and bruises. These should resolve in the next few weeks. The lumps and bruises are usually only slightly visible.

Aqualyx results

After your Aqualyx treatment, the results are long-lasting and permanent. The injections target and destroy fat cells forever. But it doesn’t make you immune to weight gain. Unfortunately, no one procedure can stop the effects of weight gain for anyone. The fat cells you have can still grow as you gain weight. This is why it is so important to maintain a healthy lifestyle with a nutritious diet and regular exercise. Because everyone is different, results may vary from person to person.

Fat-dissolving injections: how do they work? Are you sure? And where can they be used?

Until recently, anyone who wanted to get rid of stubborn fat deposits had only one really effective quick fix: surgical liposuction. However, there are now many treatment options to choose from, all of which require minimal downtime and make treating problem areas easier than ever. Belkyra is a fat-dissolving injection that does just that. Made from deoxycholic acid, a component of your own natural bile, Belkyra is a breakthrough injectable that has sparked a great deal of interest in throat rejuvenation. But how does the treatment work? Is it safe? And what can you expect in terms of results?

What is Belkyra?

The idea of fat-dissolving injections sounds almost too good to be true, but they can be very effective. The star ingredient is deoxycholic acid, which breaks down fat cells — and any other tissue it’s injected into, so make sure you’re in experienced, medical hands. Belkyra targets fat by dissolving the fat cell’s outer covering and popping it like a tiny balloon. The fat from the cells is released into the bloodstream and carried out of the body by your lymphatic and renal systems.

Is the treatment safe?

Belkyra has been approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for adults with moderate to heavy fatty tissue under the chin, which means it’s undergone extensive testing to ensure it’s safe for patients. Side effects are relatively minor and easy to manage. The treatment can cause swelling that lasts up to 10 days, although this will help the skin heal and improve its quality over time.

Who is suitable for the treatment?

You’re probably a good candidate for Belkyra if you’re generally in good health but the appearance of fat under your chin is bothering you, especially if it doesn’t respond to changes in your diet or exercise. It’s not for everyone – there needs to be enough fat to treat (at least a pinch), but too much will limit the success of the results, so adopting a healthy lifestyle is always the first step.

When do I see the results?

Results are visible after two to three sessions – and these sessions should be spaced at least four weeks apart. But depending on the size and severity of the area, you may need up to six sessions.

Belkyra has proven to be highly effective in reducing and eliminating double chins and excess fat in the cheek and neck areas. Once destroyed, these cells can no longer store or accumulate fat as they are broken down and flushed out by the body. The treatment can be used alone or in combination with injectable fillers or Botox and skin tightening devices such as Profound RF and Sofwave.

Belkyra vs Aqualyx – What’s the Difference?

Both products are made from the same active ingredient, deoxycholic acid, a molecule that occurs naturally in the body and helps us break down and absorb fat in our diet. The main difference between the two is that currently only Belkyra is FDA approved. However, Aqualyx is a very safe treatment and can be very effective for reducing stubborn love handles. Therefore, the best choice for you depends on your individual concerns and requirements. We therefore recommend consulting a doctor to determine the right treatment for you.

I can tell you that hyaluronidase (Vitrase, Hylenex) is an enzyme specific only to hyaluronic acid in the same way that deoxycholic acid (Kybella) is specific to fat. It is impossible for Hylenex (or Kybella) to dissolve any substrate other than hyaluronic acid (or fat, in the case of Kybella). As you know from your chemistry class, enzymes like hyaluronidase are usually specific to only one chemical reaction, and that is the case with hyaluronidase. I hope your dermatologist or plastic surgeon can help you understand what’s going on with your eye area. All the best, dr. Clark

What is intra-lipotherapy?

Intralipotherapy refers to fat-dissolving therapy using a sodium deoxycholate-based solution. The fat solvent is injected under the skin directly into the fat layer using a special needle or cannula. The procedure is performed under local anesthesia. The solution dissolves the fat cells, which are then broken down and absorbed by the body over several weeks.

Where can we inject degreaser?

Degreasers can be used in the following areas:

double chin

abdomen

flanks

saddlebags

inner thighs

Inner Knee

weapons

backflip

pseudo-gynecomastia

How many sessions do you need?

Two to six sessions spaced 4-6 weeks apart are expected for best results.

Is intra-lipotherapy painful?

The procedure is performed under local anesthesia with lidocaine 2%. Only 2-4 entry points are expected for the needle/cannula. Pain is common after the procedure, but generally does not limit normal social life or physical activity.

Is there a risk of bruising?

Bruising is common, temporary and should be considered a normal consequence of treatment. Post-treatment of compression garments is highly recommended to reduce bruising.

How long does it take to see the results?

The solution dissolves the fat cells, which are then broken down and reabsorbed by the body over a period of 4-6 weeks. Therefore, it can take several weeks before results are visible. Two to four sessions spaced 4-6 weeks apart are expected for best results.

How long does the procedure for an area take?

The duration of the procedure depends on the size of the area. A large area can take up to 40 minutes.

How long do the results last?

It all depends on your lifestyle. Fat cells could regenerate a few years later if you have a high calorie intake and a sedentary lifestyle.

Which degreasers do we use?

We use Desoface and Desobody degreasers approved for double chin and body fat. These are new generation degreasers.

What are the side effects?

Swelling, bruising, and pain are very common (more than 50% of cases) and can last for days or weeks

Allergic reactions (<0.002%) that may require emergency treatment Lumps (<0.05%), which are usually temporary and resolve when the fatty tissue is removed Damage to surrounding structures (<0.05%) including muscles, nerves, blood vessels Discoloration (<0.002%), usually temporary and reduced by avoiding UV light Skin necrosis (<0.0076%) describes the damage caused to the skin by the solution when in contact with it, which can result in tissue death, blistering, skin detachment, infection and scarring. Unsatisfactory results including stubborn fat, asymmetry, irregularity, loose skin afterwards. Compression garments are highly recommended to improve results and reduce swelling and bruising. They must be trimmed to the patient's size and can be purchased at www.macom-medical.com Can Anyone Have Intra Lipotherapy? You may not be suitable for treatment if you have any of the following conditions: pregnancy/breastfeeding. Infection/inflammation at the injection site. Impaired immune system or being treated for cancer. On blood thinners or immunosuppressants. Uncontrolled diabetes or other medical conditions that impair healing. Previous allergic reaction to lidocaine or degreaser. Moderate or severe kidney or liver disease. Excessive skin laxity. lipid disorders. Children under the age of 18. unrealistic expectations. Non-compliance with treatment and follow-up care. Instructions for pre-treatment Compression garments are highly recommended to improve results and reduce swelling and bruising. Compression garments must be tailored to the patient's size to be effective. These can be purchased at www.macom-medical.com. Appropriate clothing should be worn on the day of treatment to allow modest access to the area and not be overly restrictive or cause discomfort. It is important to avoid anti-inflammatory drugs (aspirin, ibuprofen, naproxen or diclofenac) for at least 5 days prior to treatment unless medically prescribed. Also, avoid alcohol 48 hours before treatment as it increases the risk of bruising and bleeding. Arnica can be taken 5 days before treatment to reduce the risk of bruising. Follow-up instructions for intra-lipotherapy. In case of pain, do not take anti-inflammatory drugs (aspirin, ibuprofen, naproxen or diclofenac), if necessary take paracetamol. Compression garments for 7 days and 7 nights after treatment. Must be tailored to patient size as too tight may cause problems and too large is ineffective. Can be purchased at www.macom-medical.com Nodules can last up to 1 month (but this is normal, if affected or lasts longer than 4 weeks contact your doctor). Bruising is common, so you should try to avoid direct sunlight, tanning beds and heat treatments during the treatment period. Skin necrosis (<0.0076%) describes the damage caused to the skin by the solution when in contact with it, which can result in tissue death, blistering, skin detachment, infection and scarring. Contact your doctor immediately if the previous skin changes have occurred. Avoid applying cosmetics to the treated area for 24 hours. Avoid strenuous or physically demanding activity for 4 weeks. Moderate exercise, healthy eating, and other lifestyle changes are recommended and my results are improving. Avoid other cosmetic or beauty treatments on the same area for at least a week. After treatment, use sunscreen with a high SPF and avoid sun exposure or tanning. Avoid extreme heat or cold in the treated area. A gentle massage can promote fat drainage. When can you contact us after the injection? If you experience any complications or unexpected signs or symptoms, it's important that you contact your doctor right away. Skin lesions, including boils, blisters, or areas of skin damage, need urgent evaluation.

Do fat dissolving injections hurt?

I did experience numbness and a little pain at the onset, but my side effects were tolerable. The process can be relatively slow, with results taking weeks or, more often, months. This can be discouraging, especially to people who are self-conscious about their chins to begin with.

I leaned back, exposing the vulnerable area under my chin, and braced myself for the prick of the needle. I clutched an ice pack, ready to apply it, and looked around, my heart racing. I was about to have vials of synthetic gastric acid injected into my double chin, which I hoped would erase it forever.

The drug being developed to treat my “submental fat” (the pocket of fat under the chin) is the new cosmetic injectable Kybella, which promises to dissolve fat cells through a series of injections. There is very little downtime, it is non-invasive and non-surgical and there is little risk. The drug is the first (and only) injectable designed to contour the dreaded double chin.

Approved by the FDA in 2015, Kythera Biopharmaceuticals’ (now acquired by Allergan) drug hit the market as an alternative to liposuction or surgery, using a synthetic version of deoxycholic acid — a salt found in human bile and involved in fat digestion supports. destroy fat cells. In the digestive tract, deoxycholic acid breaks down fat by destroying the cell membrane. When this cytolytic drug is injected into subcutaneous fat, it does the same thing—at specific locations. The dissolved fat is now cellular debris and is excreted into the lymphatic and circulatory systems by specialized immunological cells. This happens gradually over several weeks. The deoxycholic acid follows the same route; it is metabolized and broken down and then excreted as waste.

The origins of chemical fat dissolution (aka mesotherapy) date back to France in the 1950s. According to Conor Gallagher, Allergan’s executive director of medical affairs, European scientists began using a compound called phosphatidylcholine to break down fat for medical reasons in the ’60s. After a patient suffers trauma, perhaps from a fracture, tiny lumps of fat can enter the circulatory system. “And often they end up in the lungs and can cause breathing problems,” Gallagher said. “So they’re looking for a way to destroy fat, fix it, or treat it. They used phosphatidylcholine as a potential agent to try and break down that fat.” Cut to Europe in the 1980s when cosmetic researchers started looking at the compound and thought, if it can break down fat in the vessels, maybe it can elsewhere Dissolve fat, Gallagher said. Bodybuilders began injecting “PC/DA” (a combination of phosphatidylcholine and deoxycholic acid) off-label to shed flab for competition.

In the early 2000s, researchers at UCLA discovered that the fat loss caused by the PC/DA compound was actually due to deoxycholic acid – the active ingredient in Kybella. And now here we are. Or should I say, here I am in Beverly Hills with a pin in my chin.

As I hit my 30s, I started to be a little bothered by my so-called double chin. While not particularly noticeable, this small pocket of submental fat has been a part of my profile for as long as I can remember; it’s genetic. I’ve often wished it was gone, but never thought of a surgical solution. That seemed like an extreme measure for what is just a nuisance in my life. I have never seen myself get any type of cosmetic procedure. Then I saw a magazine ad for a new injectable, non-invasive double chin treatment.

I was able to try Kybella courtesy of the Beverly Hills Cosmetic Spa Alchemy 43. Concerned about being injected under the chin many, many times (the average patient receives 20 or more injections per treatment), I arrived at the “beauty lab”. It’s the kind of chic place one would imagine visiting for such a procedure, with futuristic light fixtures, high-end products on display, and luxe gold accents. It feels less like a medical setting and more like an upscale boutique, complete with a velvet couch. The young women who cast Alchemy 43 wear flawless makeup and perfectly smooth faces—a look I don’t see often in my life as a homemaker and writer on the laid-back east side of Los Angeles. Other services offered by Alchemy 43 include wrinkle relaxation, fillers, modeling and lash enhancements and I can imagine for a minute what it would be like to have the time and money to get all of these treatments. I would never be able to keep up; I don’t even get my hair cut more than once or twice a year.

Owner Nicci Levy told me that the spa visits about 30 clients a month for Kybella and that all clients have seen a positive result. “People are very interested in this treatment,” she said. “We’ve seen amazing results.” My injection expert (or “alchemist” as she’s called in Alchemy 43) Katie Saliman is a tall, blonde nurse with a strong chin. Saliman told me she loves feeding Kybella because of its “wow factor.” “This product can absolutely transform your profile and really improve the shape and contour of your jaw,” she said. I appreciated their enthusiasm.

Saliman was involved in the clinical trials for Kybella; Her experience eased my fears of being poked in the throat with needles full of acid. In studies, about 4 percent of subjects had nerve damage in their lower jaw, and this was my biggest concern prior to the procedure. I asked about the possibility of hitting a nerve, and Saliman assured me that none of her patients had. Even if it did happen, she said, I’d have a crooked smile, but it was only temporary — the damage usually wears off after a few months. I guess I could handle nerve damage, I thought wryly.

Saliman took a series of high tech 3D photos, some “before” shots and applied numbing cream under my chin. Then she applied a temporary tattoo dot grid; a map of the injection sites. With a little help from a similarly beautiful assistant, Saliman began to poke. I felt each needle go in, but it wasn’t unbearable. If I could survive labor and root canals I figured I could definitely handle it. I began to feel a burning sensation as the medication took effect and I cooled my chin when Katie paused for a new needle. In total I had about 30 injections from three ampoules of Kybella. Although there were many, the recordings themselves only lasted about five minutes. Saliman recommended I do two more treatments about six weeks apart. “Everyone needs two to six treatments, and we’re big proponents of ‘treat to complete,'” Levy said.

(Alchemy 43)

For each treatment, the injector uses between one and three ampoules of Kybella, depending on how much submental fat you have. According to Deanne Mraz Robinson, a dermatologist and director of the Connecticut Dermatology Group’s Body Sculpting Center, the cost of a single treatment ranges from $800 to $1,400, depending on how many vials you need and your doctor’s or local pricing Doctor’s Spa. Kybella’s cost can exceed that of liposuction (which generally ranges from $2,000 to $5,000), but many customers are willing to pay a higher price to avoid going under the knife. “People are excited that there is an option to treat their double chin,” Mraz Robinson, one of the investigators in Kybella’s pivotal study, told me. “Previously, the only procedure available to treat submental fullness was surgical liposuction, which is an invasive procedure with its own risks and benefits.”

Saliman told me that I’m a great candidate for Kybella because my submental fat is genetic and not weight related. And I’m 34. Younger clients usually do well because they have better skin elasticity and are less likely to have excess, sagging skin under the chin. “It’s important to make sure the fullness under the chin is from fat under the skin and isn’t caused by other conditions like skin laxity,” explained Mraz Robinson. “Submental fat can be seen across a wide age range, as factors such as genetics, hormonal status, and weight can affect the amount of fat under the skin.”

An interesting trend has emerged in market research and studies, Gallagher told me: Kybella brings into play a whole new group of injectable consumers. Approximately 45 percent of the people who receive Kybella are new to aesthetic treatments – they are people who have never been to a cosmetic or aesthetic doctor’s office before. (I’d be included in that group.) And the process attracts an unlikely clientele: men. “Many men who would not previously have considered cosmetic procedures come to Kybella to sharpen their jawline,” noted Mraz Robinson. Levy also told me that she has noticed a younger group coming to “sculpt” procedures like Kybella. Millennials seem to be interested in injections.

I’ve never felt quite like L.A. driving through Beverly Hills with a medical compression bandage around my head. My chin was quite sore for about two hours after the injections, but I started to feel better pretty quickly. As predicted, the injection area began to puff up like a bullfrog. I slept with my head propped on two pillows, the bandage around my chin.

Swelling typically peaks 24 hours after treatment and can last from two days to three weeks. It took me about three weeks to get back to baseline. But that’s normal, according to Saliman. I was told not to drink alcohol or take painkillers 48 hours before my injections and luckily I only got a tiny bruise (the day after the treatment). The inflammation wasn’t comfortable, but the swelling means the drug is working to dissolve fat — no pain, no gain. The swelling is caused by the active drug breaking down the fat cells, and some of the volume can be attributed to the solution itself. Sometimes I’m in disbelief that I actually went through something so vain, and sometimes I’m proud that I actually withstood all those needles. “You tolerated it like a CHAMP!” Saliman emailed me afterwards. This makes me hard, which is weird and awful because we’re talking about getting injectable cosmetic treatments in Beverly Hills. But I’ll take it! I am a true warrior.

Gallagher confirmed that swelling is a good thing. And swelling after subsequent treatments will not be as extreme. You may also experience bruising, pain, numbness, redness, and hardened areas (which may feel like lumps or small pea-like bumps due to swelling) in the treatment area. All this, he tells me, should be temporary. I initially had numbness and a bit of pain, but my side effects were bearable.

The process can be relatively slow, with results taking weeks or, more commonly, months. This can be discouraging, especially for people who are initially unsure about their chin. The good news is that those fat cells don’t come back once your months-long process is complete. There is no maintenance or future costs to consider. “You’re taking away those fat cells, they’re not going to recreate themselves,” Gallagher said. Safety studies have been conducted on the long-term results, and “generally, between 75 and 90 percent of patients maintain their response for up to five years.” Gallagher also noted that after the second treatment, most patients really turn the corner and have a noticeable one Notice a reduction in fat.

(Lindsey Hunter Lopez)

I haven’t seen my full results yet, but in more than 20 studies, nearly 70 percent of the thousands of patients reported physical and emotional improvements. That sounds promising. Two US studies submitted to the FDA showed that nearly 80 percent of people treated with Kybella noticed a reduction in their submental fat and thus had greater satisfaction with their appearance. And doctors are also rejoicing at the advent of this drug. “Doctors have really enjoyed the precision and potency of Kybella, I would say,” Gallagher noted. “It’s doing what it’s going to do… it’s going to kill fat cells wherever it’s injected.” Well, wherever it is injected within reason.

Kybella could be used on various other small areas. From a clinical perspective, Allergan examines the “bra fat” area – the roll of fat that may be present under the bra line or between the bra and the armpit – and the cheek. “Sometimes it’s just skin laxity, but there are times when that’s also due to fat … so we’re certainly actively considering going into a clinical program there and looking at cheek fat,” Gallagher said. Mraz Robinson told me that “Kybella will likely be approved for use on body areas to reduce subcutaneous fat,” and my injector agreed, noting, “This type of practice is already being used in the front bra fat area and upper knees.” So while larger areas have been ruled out (a swollen belly, for example, would require too much product and too many needles), investigation is ongoing to see if other small love handles can be helped with Kybella. Studies would be needed before FDA approval for use in these other areas.

I didn’t see much of a difference after my first treatment, but deoxycholic acid is currently popping fat cells after my second treatment which was about two weeks ago. I’m just noticing a reduction. The second treatment is often the turning point, the experts tell me, and Saliman is optimistic I won’t need a third try. I had lidocaine injections for anesthesia plus the Kybella shots for the second treatment and the increased volume caused more swelling. Overall, the second treatment was a bit more painful than the first and I bruised more. One thing I noticed while examining the profile photos on my “Kybella journey”: Maybe there wasn’t a big problem from the start! Perhaps this softness in my profile is more common than I thought, and not the “double chin” I was imagining. But does Kybella work? I will be more than happy to have a slimmer chin.
