2016 L’Arco Rosso del Veronese IGT (Organic, Sustainable)
From: Venetia, Italy
Grape varieties: 50% Corvina and Corvinone, 30% Rondinella, 15% Sangiovese Grosso, 5% Molinara
A traditional Valpolicella with just under 15 percent Sangiovese Rosso, Italy’s flagship grape variety, creates a folksy taste of Veneto. Rosso del Veronese is the “youngest” of winemaker Luca Fedrigo’s characteristically bold cuvées and the sexy two-seater sports car among the portfolio’s “luxury” labels. Sangiovese fattens the wine, making it both interesting and worthy of aging. The grape enhances the blend’s flavor profile, bringing with it the addition of dark cherries and a playful hint of lavender. The finish tops a medium-bodied wine, lingering amid gripping tannins. Powerful fruit, a long finish, Rosso del Veronese is a seductive bottle in the Fedrigo range.
Food Pairing: For this fun wine, keep the menu traditionally traditional: spaghetti and meatballs, veal parmigiana, roasted lamb shank, grilled steak with sautéed mushrooms.
Varieties Notes:
Corvina: A late ripening grape grown primarily in the Veneto region of Italy. It has a very thick skin and is known for its high acidity, low tannins and notes of sour cherry and bitter almond.
Corvinone: It is believed to be a subspecies of Corvina. It has a lower alcohol content and is slightly lighter in color than Corvina, but is more aromatic.
Rondinella: Produces high yields and has a thick skin that makes it disease resistant and great for drying out.
Sangiovese Grosso: Widespread throughout Italy, although best known for making Rosso di Montalcino and Brunello di Montalcino wines. Common characteristics are high acidity and tannins, as well as aromas of dark cherries, plums, dried herbs and spices.
Molinara: A light bodied grape often used to add acidity to red blends. It is very susceptible to oxidation, which has led to a drastic decline in its production.
Not many 17-year-olds would have the vision to take up a career-building opportunity and work side-by-side with a master craftsman. For wine drinkers with a passion for Veneto wines, it is fortunate that winemaker Luca Fedrigo had this vision.
L’Arco is the result of this life-changing decision.
About the winemaker:
To fully understand Luca’s story, you must first meet legendary Amarone maker Giuseppe Quintarelli, who offered Luca an apprenticeship that ultimately grew into a father-son relationship.
For Luca, a fiery and passionate Ducati racer and madly in love with Quintarelli’s granddaughter, the position meant Luca had to learn patience and passion for wine and embrace what some would describe as Quintarelli’s eccentric style of winemaking. True to Shakespeare’s “Romeo and Juliet”, Luca grew up very differently from the farming lifestyle of the Quintarelli clan. When Luca started helping in the family’s vegetable garden, trust began to develop between the two men. Quintarelli was looking for a successor who remained true to his personal viticulture philosophy. Quintarelli saw Luca as pure, as a blank slate on which to etch his knowledge.
For more than a decade, the two men worked side by side in the vineyards and in the cellar, where Quintarelli passed on his extensive knowledge of winemaking techniques, emphasizing the importance of the region’s traditional techniques and teaching Luca respect for the native grape varieties of the Valpolicella zone. Long days often grew even longer when Quintarelli instructed Luca to stay late nights in the cellar “to be with the wine”.
Luca, aged 20, founded L’Arco in 1998 on 17 acres a short walk from the renowned Quintarelli estate. The vineyard is located in Negrar, the most traditional of the seven Valpolicella zones, whose roots go back to prehistoric times. Today it is known as a prosperous agricultural community 68 miles west of Venice. L’Arco, literally ‘the arch’, pays homage to a 16th-century stone arch known as the ‘Arco di Giove’, visible from the Fedrigo farmhouse.
