Leroy Thomas and the Zydeco RoadRunners
Leroy Thomas was born in Lake Charles, Louisiana and grew up in Elton Louisiana. He comes from a family of zydeco musicians. His father Leo “The Bull” Thomas is the only zydeco musician to lead a zydeco band from the drums. Leroy’s father had a unique way of drumming that not only inspired his sons, but is still emulated by many zydeco bands today. Other family-related Zydeco musicians include Keith Frank, a second cousin on his mother’s side, Geno Delafose, a second cousin on his father’s side, and Brian Terry, a second cousin on his father’s side.
At the age of eight, Leroy decided he wanted to be a drummer like his father, Leo, so he and his little brother, Lee Andrus Thomas, built a drum kit using five-gallon paint cans. They used tree branches as drumsticks and cardboard tubes made from Christmas paper as microphones. Leroy would play bucket drums and sing carefree. Little did he know that he was on his way to becoming a very talented musician. In his early teens, Leroy focused on playing the accordion with determination, imagination and ingenuity. He heard that a man in town had an accordion for sale. With his brother and cousin in tow, Leroy went to town with a used tape recorder as currency and bought his first accordion. Leroy taught himself how to play this accordion with the same determination he used to bring to his drumming. At the age of 18, Leroy joined his father’s accordion band. Leroy was proud to perform his father’s signature song, “Why You Wanna Make Me Cry,” which has been Zydeco’s most-repeated song for over 27 years. For fifteen years father and son made music and toured the world together. In 1998, Leroy decided it was time to start his own band, Leroy Thomas & the Zydeco Roadrunners. Today, Leroy and his band have performed in over 33 states and abroad and have released eight CDs. Leroy prefers what he calls “old school zydeco”. He likes to keep Louisiana tradition alive and flowing. He throws in his own flavor but keeps coming back to the original Zydeco, the real deal.
