Size matters
With any dog treat there is a risk of choking by the time your pooch has gobbled most of it, and as your dog enjoys the Bully Stick he will slowly decrease in size. When it gets really small, some dog owners choose to replace it with a new one to avoid the risk of choking, especially if they have an avid eater. But who wants to waste such a tasty treat? To help your dog enjoy the last bit of his Bully Stick, use a Bully Stick Companion that will hold the treat in place to prevent your dog from choking on the last nub. When you’re done, simply take the remaining piece out of the Bully Stick Companion and toss it to your dog.

But how long should you let your pup chew on a bully stick? Puppies are naturally troublemakers so while you should keep an eye on them at all times, they should be supervised when playing with a racquet.

Our Story
Whether you’re new to puppy training or you know what to expect, you probably know how much puppies love to chew. Shoes, clothes, handbags, furniture – you name it – nothing seems off-limits during the first few months of teething. During this time, setting chewing limits for your pup can be a near-constant struggle.
Although you may be testing your patience, you probably also know that a puppy’s need to chew is completely natural and instinctive. Chewing not only reduces the pain and discomfort of teething, but also supports a healthy state of mind by releasing two important neurotransmitters. Dopamine and serotonin, helps against boredom and strengthens the jaw muscles.
Bully Sticks are one of the best chews you can give your pup to satisfy their need to chew, crunch and gnaw things to death!
Here’s why:
Bully Sticks promote healthy puppy growth
Bully Sticks* are a healthy, highly digestible chew that breaks down easily in your pup’s stomach. Bully Sticks are actually beef muscle and are extremely high in protein and low in fat – they provide a natural chew that supports the needs of your pup’s growing body. Not only will chewing on Bully Sticks keep your pup engaged and happy for extended periods of time, but as they also provide all the essential amino acids a dog needs, it will also support muscle, skin, coat and brain growth.
Bully Sticks are also good for your pup’s oral health. Chewing on Bully Sticks provides a natural way to remove the biofilm that appears in the mouth and eventually turns into plaque if not removed. By keeping plaque at bay, you’re also proactively preventing gum disease! Finally, chewing encourages saliva, which is rich in lysozyme, and keeps oral pathogens (bad bacteria) at bay.
What size Bullystick should I feed my puppy?
Bully Sticks are great for puppies because they are durable. Bully Sticks last a little longer than normal dog chews because they are baked at high temperatures after hanging to dry, making them nice and hard. Bully Sticks also come in different sizes, so you can feed your pup different sized Bully Sticks as they grow up.
Bully Sticks are typically available in 6″ or 12″ lengths, with thicknesses ranging from a thin 10 millimeters (mm) to extra thick sizes of 23mm or more.
Be sure to choose sticks that match your dog’s weight. A stick that is too big for your pup is also likely too much stick for him to consume in one sitting. Keep in mind that overfeeding in dogs can cause mild stomach upset.
Conversely, giving a chopstick that is too small to a larger puppy will not only reduce the time he is engaged with the chopstick, thereby minimizing its benefits, but also increase the likelihood that he will break off a small piece and choke on it. Swallowing a small unchewed piece of bullying stick can also lead to intestinal obstruction.
Here’s a simple sizing chart to use as a guide for feeding your pup Bullysticks based on their weight. We recommend starting with the smaller and thinner sticks and then introducing the 12 inch sticks once your dog is at least 45 pounds.
Dog Weight 6″ thin 6″ regular 6″ thick 12″ regular 12″ thick 12″ extra thick < 15 lbs ✓ 15 - 30 lbs ✓ 30 - 45 lbs ✓ ✓ 45 - 60 lbs ✓ ✓ ✓ ✓ 60 - 75 lbs ✓ ✓ ✓ ✓ 75 - 90+ pounds ✓ ✓ Also consider your pup's chewing strength and chewing preferences. If you have a power chewer, you may need to consider going up a size for the Bully Stick. Monitor your pup's calorie intake Keep track of your pup's calorie intake to keep him at a healthy weight. Because bully sticks are dense chews, they are high in calories. You should adjust any extra treats you give your dog on days he's on Bully Sticks to account for the extra calories while keeping the food intact to ensure a complete and balanced diet. As a rule of thumb, a medium-sized 6-inch bully stick averages nine calories per inch, or about 54 calories per stick. We recommend giving your dog Bullysticks no more than two to three times a week - unless you remove the Bullystick before it's completely used up. There's no reason you can't make a Bully Stick last through multiple chewing sessions. Not all Bullysticks are the same Learn how to tell a quality faceoff stick from another. Keep an eye out for sticks marked "scent-free." While this may be a dog parent's ultimate dream, sticks that are labeled "unscented" are often treated with chemicals during their drying process to mask or remove the natural odor of bully sticks. On the other hand, sticks that are labeled as "low odor" are fine to use - it just means they've been baked or smoked during the drying process to reduce the natural smell of the stick. High quality, premium bullysticks, like those offered by Bow Wow Labs, are baked at high temperatures after hanging to dry, which removes harmful bacteria that can upset your pup's stomach. Give your pup Bully Sticks the safe way Be sure to use a safety device like our Bully Buddy when giving Bullysticks to your dog. Puppies are avid chewers and can chew quickly. When bullysticks extend to the last inch or two, they can become a choking hazard if swallowed without being chewed. Although Bully Sticks are 100% digestible, there is a possibility of choking or intestinal obstruction. A secure Bully Stick holder allows your pup to reap the benefits of these healthy and delicious treats while giving you peace of mind.
* Bully Sticks are a great long-term chew that will provide your pup with great enjoyment, support a healthy state of mind and satisfy their instinctive need to chew. We always recommend pairing your Bully Sticks with the correct size Bully Buddy to keep your pup safer and avoid a choking hazard or intestinal obstruction once he has chewed down to the last 1-1.5 inches of the Bully Stick . The short answer is that bully sticks are beef pizzle. Pizzle is an all-natural muscle and is very similar to single-ingredient products like beef tendon straps or other dog jerkies. You may also hear them called ‘bully bones’ or ‘bully chews’ – these are just different names for bully sticks for dogs.
Our Story
Ask most dog owners what their dog’s favorite chew is, and “Bully Sticks” will likely be the answer.
Here at Redbarn we are quite familiar with bullysticks for dogs. Redbarn has been a leading manufacturer of Bullysticks for the pet industry for over 20 years. Over the years we’ve asked many questions about Bullysticks: Are Bullysticks safe for dogs? Are Bullysticks good for dogs? What are bully sticks made of? The list goes on and on.
Since we have such a robust history of making and selling faceoff sticks, who better to put the facts straight on faceoff sticks?
With lots of positive things to talk about, we thought we’d focus on some of the best things about Bully Sticks.
What are bully sticks?
If you’re new to bullying sticks, the first thing you may be wondering is, “What are bullying sticks made out of?” That’s a great question! When it comes to the ingredients for Bully Sticks, you’ll be glad to know that they’re single-ingredient chews (so no long and complicated list of ingredients). But if you look at a bovine anatomy diagram, you won’t see a “bully stick” there. So what are they? The short answer is that Bully Sticks are Beef Pizzle. Pizzle is an all-natural muscle and is very similar to single-ingredient products like beef tendon ligaments or other dog meat jerky. You can also call them “Bully Bones” or “Bully Chews” – these are just different names for bully sticks for dogs.
If you’re still wondering, but what is Beef Pizzle? That’s a great question too. You might want to sit down for this one though. Are you ready? Beef Pizzle is a bull penis. If you find out that you want to stop buying more Bully chews, we encourage you to read on.
Why pizza?
When people find out what bully sticks are, their reaction is often, “Ew. Why?” It might seem gross to us, but dogs love beef pizza for the strong aroma and flavor. Dogs love offal, like pizza buns, because they closely mimic their ancestors’ diet.
Aside from being a treat that your dog thinks will be delicious, there are many things that make Bully Sticks a great one-ingredient chew.
BullPizzle is:
Free of
preservatives
soy
grains
Wheat
Artificial flavors
Guaranteed
100% beef
Highly digestible
High protein content
Ideal for all phases of life
point is? Beef Pizzle is a GREAT one-ingredient treat for your dog. For dogs with stomach sensitivities, allergies or who just love the taste of beef, Bullysticks are unbeatable.
Sustainable chews for dogs
At Redbarn, our goal is to make products that are not only good for your pet, but good for the planet too.
Did you know that compared to these other food sources, cows require 28 times more land, 6 times more fertilizer and 11 times more water? That adds up to about five times more greenhouse gas emissions.
At Redbarn, we work with ranchers to buy parts of their livestock that would otherwise be discarded. To be clear, the reasons these parts would otherwise be thrown away is not because there is something wrong with them, but because there is little to no demand for them outside of the pet industry.
While there are some human nutrition companies working to use the whole animal, there are many body parts that are considered unfit for human consumption and/or many people are not interested in eating them (Pizzle , anyone?) .
While some people object to these by-products, we believe that many animal body parts, if they are high quality and ethically sourced, can make great chews for your dog! This includes the beef pizzle we use for Bully Sticks along with hooves, bull horns, tails, esophagus, lungs and ears. We use every part of the animal, which helps make farms more sustainable.
The advantages of face-off sticks
digestibility
Bully Sticks are made from 100% beef. They only contain one ingredient – beef pizza. Bully Sticks are a very tasty, chewy chew that most dogs find irresistible.
Redbarn Bully Sticks are a great chew option for your dog. They are all natural and have no artificial colours, flavors, preservatives or additives. We slow roast them in their own juice to bring out the natural flavors dogs love.
Redbarn Bully Sticks are a single ingredient chew that you can give your dog with confidence as they are highly palatable and fully digestible.
Complete digestibility and our rigorous QA testing ensure that Redbarn Bully Sticks are not only healthy for your dog, but one of the best chewing options for almost any dog, regardless of breed, size or age.
However, as with any treat, monitoring is important. Bully Sticks are easy to digest, but make sure your dog doesn’t break off large pieces that can pose a choking hazard.
Dental health benefits
With all of the information emerging about how important dental health is to dogs’ overall health, pet owners are faced with the challenge of how to keep their pup’s teeth clean.
If your dog has a buildup of plaque, the best thing you can do is schedule a professional cleaning. Next, start a routine of wiping or brushing your teeth. You should also start providing chewy chews like bully sticks to help maintain your puppies’ pearly whites.
If you have a puppy, start brushing his teeth right away so he gets comfortable with the process. You should also regularly offer hard chews to support healthy teeth and gums. Incorporating chewing and gnawing on hard chews into your dog’s routine will help maintain clean and healthy teeth and gums.
Curious about how Bully Sticks help improve your dog’s teeth? At first glance, it may seem counterintuitive that your dog will have cleaner teeth by eating. The simple answer? It depends on how your dog chews.
The mechanical action of chewing hard chews like bully sticks promotes dental health by naturally scraping teeth and gums. This “scraping” helps remove harmful plaque and reduce debris, keeping your dog’s teeth cleaner. This is because chewing removes any debris before it sticks to the teeth.
High protein concentration
Dogs are opportunistic carnivores. This means they prefer protein and will benefit from it, but will certainly eat almost anything. Since we know they’re healthiest and thrive on a protein-based diet, why not give them chews that promote their best health? A great way to support your dog’s protein intake is with natural chews!
Redbarn Bully Sticks come from protein-rich beef muscles. They are also high in amino acids that support muscles, brain, skin and coat.
Redbarn Bully Sticks are fully digestible, high in protein and support dental health. Show your pup how much you love them by giving them a treat that will support their dental health and give them the protein they need to thrive!
Types of faceoff sticks
We offer different sizes, from 3 inches to 36 inches. Redbarn even have a range of mini Bullysticks that are the perfect size for smaller breeds! While Bully chews are the most popular, Redbarn makes a variety of Bully shapes so you can find the best Bully for your dog.
Shaped faceoff sticks
Wondering what types of bully sticks are available? If you’re already a bully stick fan or natural chew expert, you might be wondering, “Why would I choose molded bully sticks?” What’s so special about them?
For dogs that need a little extra chewing, molded bullysticks offer a fun challenge to keep puppies happy and busy. Every dog is different, so your dog will have their own personal preference for bully stick shapes.
Here are some of the faceoff forms available:

Dog chews are an excellent antidote to boredom and help keep dogs entertained. However, dog chews can also contribute to your dog’s health in ways that pet owners didn’t realize.
Here are the benefits of healthy dog chews on our pets’ health:
dental care
Chewing is one of the most natural things dogs do. The truth is that gnawing helps keep your teeth healthy. Bones, raw meat, and sinew are common things wild dogs chew to keep their teeth healthy. However, other dental health needs may be beneficial for your dogs, such as: B. natural dog chews and healthy dog chews.
Natural chews are tasty and full of flavors that every dog loves. Different types of healthy dog chews like Purina treats have different levels of dog dental care. So the best decision is to rotate through different natural chews each week. You can even add healthy dog chew toys. This can help preserve the dog’s teeth and is a fun and exciting experience.
boredom
If the dog has idle jaws, it can lead to destructive behavior. They will develop the habit of destroying furniture, digging, developing aggression and bad eating habits. These habits result in an understimulated dog.
One of the best solutions to prevent this is natural chews. Natural dog chews are an excellent way to keep dogs occupied, safe and happy. It’s best to choose a durable dog chew that will keep the dog entertained while the pet owner is busy. However, it’s still best to have supervision so dogs don’t choke on the dog chew.
fear
One of the things that dogs develop as a result of destructive behavior is fear. Separation anxiety is very common in dogs. Separation anxiety occurs when dogs are afraid of being separated from their owners to be left home alone.
Healthy dog treats help dogs distract themselves from the things that scare or trigger them. Some dogs become frightened when their owners appear to be leaving. That means packing your suitcase, putting on your shoes or getting the house key.
Natural dog chews can distract dogs and allow them to feel comfortable with the thought of being alone. It may not be the cure for her separation anxiety. Still, it helps dog parents reduce their dogs’ destructive behavior.
nutrition
Dog chews are not only good for dental health, but also for the overall health of the dog. There are many chews that contain essential nutrients like fat, protein, and minerals. It can be supplementary and can be good for dogs.
While chewing doesn’t provide the same amount of nutrients needed for a balanced diet for dogs, it is still useful. It provides adequate nutrition that supports the pet’s needs. Healthy dog chews are high in protein while being low in fat, which adds calories to puppies’ diets and builds and maintains a senior dog’s muscles. Some are packed with phosphorus and calcium, which can help strengthen the marrow and bones.
Healthy treats for your dog do not exceed 10% of the dog’s diet. It is still helpful to balance the diet and support the dog’s health.
Hip and joint care
As the dogs get older, they develop joint and hip problems. Hip and joint problems are not inevitable even in larger breeds. Pet owners can avoid exposing their dogs to joint pain and immobility.
Dog parents can protect their dog’s joints and strengthen tissues by using natural chews. So feed them collagen-rich natural chews because natural collagen will start to weaken or deteriorate. Eating natural dog chews rich in collagen will replenish crucial connective tissues in their bodies.
Collagen may not repair joint damage. However, this can be prevented. Feed the dogs a natural collagen chew every week. It supports dogs’ joints and hips as they grow and age.
These dog chews also help remove plaque from your dog’s teeth.

Can bully sticks cause blockage?

Beware of the tail end of the bully stick
Dogs and dog owners love Bully Sticks because they are easy to digest, natural, healthy, stimulating and delicious. But when dogs chew the stick, they increase the risk of choking on the back end of the treat. If that little lump is swallowed whole, your dog could choke or develop an intestinal obstruction, both of which are serious medical emergencies.
Again, this is no small risk – it happens to everyone. That. Time.
In fact, our founder Scott Bow started Wow Labs after choking a mob stick with his dog Finn. Luckily Finn was able to cough up the bully stick after initially choking on it, but sometimes dogs aren’t so lucky.
Secure the Bully Stick securely to prevent choking
To solve this common, troubling problem, Scott came up with an ingenious solution: the Bully Buddy. The Bully Buddy securely secures Bullysticks so dogs don’t choke on the last treat. When offered with a safety device like the Bully Buddy, dogs can enjoy Bullysticks while minimizing their risk of choking.
Watch this video to learn more about the Bully Buddy.
The Bully Buddy not only provides more security, but also offers pet owners and carers peace of mind. “The Bully Buddy is the best product I’ve seen for preventing bullysticks from becoming a choking hazard,” says Dr. Jerry Moore, DVM at East San Rafael Veterinary Clinic in California.
Sure, dogs can swallow or choke on anything that you don’t willingly give them to eat—coins, balls, clothing, batteries, tin foil, toys, rope, rocks, balls, wood, plastic, and more.
But a bully stick doesn’t have to be part of this list. Bully Sticks are a great dog treat IF they are administered safely and the Bully Buddy is the safest way to treat your dog.

How often should you give your dog a bully stick?
We recommend giving your dog bully sticks no more than two to three times a week—unless you are removing the bully stick before it is completely consumed. There’s no reason you can’t make a bully stick last through several chew sessions.
Why Bully Sticks Are Great Dog Treats – American Kennel Club
Does your dog like to chew? Do you catch him running off with a shoe or nibbling on the corners of the couch? Chewable toys and treats are the perfect alternative to give your dog to prevent them from chewing on your valuables.
A particular favorite of many dog owners (and the puppies themselves) are bullysticks. So what’s so great about these edible chews?
Bully Sticks are healthy treats
Bully Sticks are not only a safe treat for dogs, they offer a variety of health benefits and give your dog something to chew on.
Unlike other chews or treats, Bully Sticks are easy to digest. For example, the rawhide in rawhide can be difficult for some dogs to digest. Bullysticks, on the other hand, are highly digestible, meaning they break down easily in your dog’s stomach. They also don’t splinter like other goodies, so you don’t have to worry about broken pieces causing internal injuries.
In addition to their high digestibility, Bully Sticks are a tasty treat made from just one ingredient! Made only from protein-rich beef muscle, Bully Sticks are ideal for your dog. Beef is a complete source of amino acids that support your dog’s muscles, brain, skin and coat. If your dog suffers from an allergy or sensitivity, Bullysticks are a great chew option as they are free from artificial chemicals, additives and preservatives.
Do you want to keep your dog’s smile healthy? Bully Sticks are good for that too! While you should always maintain a tooth brushing routine with your pup, you can use bully sticks to help maintain clean teeth. Since inflammation of the gums (periodontal disease) is one of the most common diseases in dogs, solid chews are an important part of keeping your dog healthy. Chews, like bully sticks, support healthy teeth and gums because the chewing and gnawing required to get through the treat removes plaque and debris before they can stick.
Bully Sticks are good for all dogs
Not only are Bully Sticks a healthy treat, but more importantly, dogs love them! Dogs of any breed, age or size can enjoy chewing on a Bully Stick. In fact, they’re perfect for puppies, as long as your pup can chew hard food/treats on their own. Bully Sticks offer puppies the same high protein and dental health benefits as adult dogs.
In addition, Bullysticks are varied and perfect for your dog’s preferences. You can find a bully stick that does justice to your dog. The sticks have different thicknesses, sizes and shapes. Is your dog an aggressive, intense chewer? Try a braided stick. Do they take a long time to chew? Straight sticks are a good choice. Need to challenge your dog? Shaped bullies, like bully rings, provide a puzzle for your dog to chew.
Bully Sticks are built to last, in more ways than one. They can last while your dog chews them and they stay fresh for up to three years too.

Dogs like to chew. Chewing is not only fun, it also helps to relieve boredom and keeps teeth and gums healthy. But not all dog chews are created equal.
Bully Sticks are popular chews made from a bull’s or bull’s penis. Also known as Bully Bones or Pizzles, these chews are usually made from 100 percent beef. Bully sticks can be safe as long as you give them in moderation and supervise your pet when they’re chewing on them, says veterinarian Erin Katribe, medical director of Best Friends Animal Society.
“Bully Sticks have a high fat content. So, like with any treat, if a large amount of a rich food is ingested, or your dog has a very sensitive stomach, gastrointestinal upset can occur,” says Katribe. She adds, best to give your dog bullysticks in moderation, “If you notice your dog has an upset stomach or intestines (usually diarrhea) after a bullystick, it may be too much.” If this happens, only give your dog smaller portions or not at all.

Our Story
The Natural Dog Company, Inc. (NDC) was founded eleven years ago by Dan Goodnow in his garage in Portland, Oregon. His goal was to start and grow a business that would make quality dog treats and chews comparable to what he would feed his own dogs and sell them to Ma and Pa pet stores and to private customers. Originally, Bully Sticks were his only product and he had a lot to educate customers about what his product was and how chewing would benefit his dogs.
Dan realized that in order to be successful, he needed to provide excellent customer service to all of his clients. This meant providing consistent quality and consistency in its products and delivering them to the customer on time at a fair price.
In the last 10 years the company has grown to a customer base of over 500 accounts. It has relocated four times, expanded its workforce to over 20 full-time employees and expanded its product range to over 200 SKUs.
If you cannot find our products in a pet shop near you, you can order directly from our warehouse.
Tuesday and Dan, our Founder/CEO
In 2009, Dan and his wife adopted Jen Tuesday, a 5-month-old Golden Retriever mix, from a McMinnville, OR animal shelter.
Dan and Jen were very excited to be newlyweds adopting their first dog together. Her older dog Stella was a perfect angel. You could leave Stella alone in the car with an unwrapped Chipotle burrito, and when you come back the burrito would be completely untouched.
When Dan and Jen brought Tuesday home for the first time, they were a little stunned. Tuesday was very, very wild. She had seemingly endless energy. And the chewing! Tuesday never stopped chewing. Be it shoes, furniture or drywall – Tuesday always seemed to have something in her mouth. Dan and Jen quickly realized that chewing is a natural behavior for dogs. Instead of punishing Tuesday, they decided to find something suitable for her to chew on. Determined to find a solution, Dan and Jen began researching various products on the market.
Dan and Jen wanted to offer Tuesday something that was healthy, natural, and made with simple ingredients. When they couldn’t find anything suitable at their local pet store or online, Dan decided to start The Natural Dog Company.
Dan explains, “We started The Natural Dog Company in 2009 because we love our dogs and care about the treats we give them. We know what it means to want the best for your dog and that’s why we only sell the natural products that we stand behind with our 100% satisfaction guarantee.
We are a small, family run business based in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains in Loveland, Colorado. Like many passionate dog owners, our dogs rule our lives. From planning weekend trips to the mountains where the dogs can run free to visiting new dog parks whenever we’re in town, our dogs are considered in every decision we make.”
