Navjot Singh Sidhu (born 20 October 1963) is an Indian National Congress politician, television personality and retired international cricketer. He is the former President of the Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee. He was previously Minister of Tourism and Cultural Affairs in the Punjab State Government.[1][2][3]

As a professional cricketer, Sidhu had a career spanning over 19 years after making his first-class debut in 1981/82. After losing his place in the national team following his international debut in 1983–84, he returned to score for four and a half centuries at the 1987 World Cup. Playing primarily as a first-class batter, Sidhu featured in 51 Tests and 136 one-day internationals for his country. He became known for his six-hit ability and earned the nickname “Sixer Sidhu”.[4] After retirement, he turned to commenting and television, notably as a judge on comedy shows and as a regular guest on Comedy Nights with Kapil (2013–2015) and later The Kapil Sharma Show (2016–2019). He was a contestant on the reality TV show Bigg Boss (2012) and appeared on the show Kyaa Hoga Nimmo Kaa.

Sidhu joined the Bharatiya Janata Party in 2004 and ran in the Amritsar general election that year. He won the election and held the seat until 2014, also winning the next election. He was nominated for the Rajya Sabha by Punjab in 2016 before resigning from the position and resigning from the party in the same year. In 2017 he joined the Indian National Congress and was elected to the Punjab Legislative Assembly by Amritsar East. He lost the Punjab Legislative Assembly election from the Amritsar Eastern Assembly constituency in 2022.[5]

In 1988, Sidhu was involved in a street riot incident of an assault causing the death of a man. In May 2022, the Supreme Court of India convicted him of voluntary violation (Section 323 of the Indian Penal Code) and sentenced him to 1 year of rigorous imprisonment.[6] He has been serving his sentence in Patiala Prison ever since.

Sidhu was born in Patiala, Punjab, India.[7] His father Sardar Bhagwant Singh was a decent cricketer and wished to see his son Navjot as a first class cricketer. Sidhu is a graduate of Yadavindra Public School, Patiala. He studied in Mumbai at the HR College of Commerce and Economics.[8] Sidhu was elected to the Lok Sabha in 2004 as a member from Amritsar with a Bharatiya Janata Party ticket; he later resigned after his conviction in 2006.[9] After the Supreme Court overturned his conviction, he successfully challenged the seat of Amritsar Lok Sabha, defeating his congressional rival, State Finance Minister Surinder Singla, by 77,626 votes. He is also the current President of the World Jat Aryan Foundation.[10] He is a vegetarian.[11]

He is married to Navjot Kaur Sidhu, a doctor and former member of the Punjab Legislative Assembly.[12][13]

Cricket career[ edit ]

Sidhu made his first-class debut in November 1981 playing for Punjab against Services in Amritsar. Opening the innings, he made 51 before running out as his team won the match by one inning. He was called up to the India Test team in November 1983 after scoring a century (122) for the North Zone the previous month when he played against the traveling West Indies team. He was drafted into the Test team to replace an injured Dilip Vengsarkar for the third Test in Ahmedabad. He scored 20 runs in 90 minutes before being booed after being released from the ground.[23] He was dropped from the team after another modest result in the final test at Madras.

Sidhu was recalled to the national team for the World Cup just four years later. In his One Day International (ODI) debut against Australia in the first of the group stage games, he made a 79-ball 73, an inning that included five sixes and four fours. India went on to lose the match by one run. After the game, Australia captain Allan Border remarked: “If that guy hits the ball, he stays hit.”[23] In India’s next game against New Zealand, Sidhu scored the winning goal with four sixes and a 75 slam in four fours, which was his helps team record their first win against them at World Championships.[27] Sidhu scored two more consecutive fifties, against Australia and Zimbabwe (51 and 55 respectively), becoming the first player to score four consecutive half centuries on his debut in ODIs. He carried his good form to the Asian Cup the following year and helped his team win back the trophy. He scored half a century in the opening match against hosts Bangladesh before scoring another in the final (76 balls from 87) and earning Man of the Match awards for both performances. He finished the tournament with three fifties in four innings totaling 179 carries and was named man of the tournament.

Sidhu returned to the Test side after five years, replacing Mohinder Amarnath with a century in the first innings of the Bangalore Test against New Zealand in November 1988. He batted for 295 minutes and made 116 in 195 balls, an inning that included four sixes and 12 fours, mostly punishing the spinners before going on with an unbeaten 43 in the second innings and helping his team win by 172 runs. His second Test century came later that season in the fourth Test of India’s Caribbean tour. He made 116 opening the innings and injured himself 30 minutes from the end of day one’s game after suffering from leg cramps. Wisden wrote, “Striking confidently despite obvious technical deficiencies, he reached his century in 324 minutes on 216 balls and hit eight fours.” fastest in the world.[34] He totaled 179 runs for an average of 29.83 for the series.

Sidhu toured Pakistan in 1989–90 and averaged 38.42 in four Tests, with his best performance coming in the fourth Test at Sialkot. He saved India in their second innings when he lost 38/4 and set up a century stand with Sachin Tendulkar while making 97. He was named man of the match. Sidhu injured his wrist later that season in the first Test of India’s tour of New Zealand while facing an aggressive fast-bowling spell from Danny Morrison, ruling him out of the series. He had a poor tour of England and Australia, averaging 11.20 and 20.40, totaling 56 and 102 runs respectively, both three Test series. After poor performances at national level, he was dropped from the 16-man squad selected to tour South Africa from October 1992. Ajay Jadeja replaced him in the squad.

Sidhu was recalled when England toured India later that season. He made his third Test hundred in the second Test at Madras, counting 106 of 273 balls in the opening innings. He partnered with Tendulkar who made 165 and took their team to 560 before the declaration. India went on to win the match and series. Sidhu notably attacked spinner John Emburey in his innings, which contained nine fours. He collected 235 in the series at 58.75.[44] Sidhu was India’s top player in the ensuing ODI series, scoring 287 runs at 57.40. He played two game-winning knocks: a 76 in Chandigarh followed by an unbeaten 134 in Gwalior. He received the Man of the Match award for both performances. The final innings followed after India lost two wickets with 4 runs on the board. Sidhu put together a 175-run stand for the third wicket with Mohammad Azharuddin. En route to his century, Sidhu has passed 2,000 runs in ODIs.[47] After India’s series win in the last game, Sidhu was presented with the Man of the Series award.

His first ODI century came against Pakistan in Sharjah in 1989, while his 134 against England in Gwalior in 1993 was his highest ODI score and what innings he said to be his best when he retired in 1999. Sidhu said in an interview that an article criticizing his dismal performance changed his cricket life.[50] After a string of poor performances in 1983, Rajan Bala, a well-known cricket columnist, wrote an article about him in the Indian Express entitled “Sidhu: The Strokeless Wonder”. It was a life-changing epiphany and he began to take his cricket career seriously.[51]

After his improved performance at the 1987 World Cup, the same columnist wrote an article entitled “Sidhu: From Strokeless Wonder To A Palm-Grove Hitter” applauding his performance.[52]

Sidhu scored over 500 test runs in one year three times (1993, 1994 and 1997). His only Test double century came during India’s 1997 tour of the West Indies. In 1994, he scored 884 ODI runs. Sidhu was the first Indian batsman to score caps in one day for more than 5 centuries.[53]

Sidhu left India’s 1996 tour of England citing differences with captain Mohammad Azharuddin. He was subsequently banned from the team by the BCCI for ten Tests and eventually returned on the 1996/97 tour of the West Indies. He scored a double century in the second Test at Port of Spain, his first in Tests. At 488 balls in 671 minutes, it was one of the slowest in Test history. He reached his century on day two [56] and after scoring just 94 runs on day three, he doubled on the morning of day four. Along the way, he posted a 171-run stand with Rahul Dravid and a 171-run stand with Tendulkar. The game ended in a draw.[57] Aside from 201, Sidhu had an average series, collecting 276 at 46.00 in six innings.

Sidhu was dropped from the test side for the series against Pakistan after a poor tour of New Zealand in 1998–99.

In December 1999 he announced his retirement from all forms of cricket. He played 51 Test matches and over 100 ODIs, scoring over 7,000 international runs in the process. He scored 27 First Class Centurys in an 18-year career.[49]

Known for his tendency to attack spinners, he cracked eight sixes in 124 against Sri Lanka in 1993–94 and four fifties in five innings against the Australians in 1997–98, deliberately singleing out Shane Warne.

Sidhu began his career as a commentator when India toured Sri Lanka in 2001. As a commentator, Sidhu was known for his one-liners, which became known as “Sidhuismen”. Sony Max, which aired the games from the series, launched a website, sidhuisms.com, which published one-liners from his commentary as “Sidhuism of the Day” and held competitions where users could choose their best one-liner. 65]

After being fired by ESPN star for swearing on air, Sidhu was signed to commentate on Ten Sports. He also appeared regularly as an expert on various Indian news channels. This led to a dispute with Star India, who claimed Sidhu had breached his £22.5million contract with them by working for their competitor and are demanding a refund.

In early 2019, Sidhu caused controversy when he was interpreted as supporting Pakistan in his response to the Pulwama terrorist attack that killed 40 Indian Border Security Force personnel. He was asked to leave the second season of the Kapil Sharma Show, on which he had been a long-time permanent guest, and was replaced by Archana Puran Singh.

Cyrus Sahukar used to host a show on MTV, Piddhu the Great, in which he is disguised as Piddhu, a double of Sidhu. The one-liners in the program, similar to Sidhuisms, are called “Pidhuisms”. A similar cartoon was performed by Sunil Grover in Season 1 of the Kapil Sharma Show.[72]

Bharatiya Janata Party [ edit ]

Sidhu won the 2004 Indian general election with a Bharatiya Janata Party ticket from the Amritsar seat. After resigning due to a court case against him, he ran again after the sentence was stayed. He won a by-election with a clear majority. In the 2009 general election, he defeated INC’s Om Prakash Soni by 6,858 votes.[86] That’s what Sidhu had to say after failing to be nominated as the party from Amritsar in the 2014 Indian general election.

Amritsar is where my work and actions speak for themselves. Ever since I started voting from this sacred place, I have made a promise to myself that I would never leave this place. Either I will run from Amritsar or I will not vote.[87]

He reiterated that he had no objection to the decision as he considered himself a protégé of Arun Jaitley. However, he maintained his position of not running from any constituency, while wholeheartedly accepting the party’s announced decision.[88]

Rajya Sabha MP[edit]

Navjot Singh Sidhu took the oath as a member of the Rajya Sabha on April 28, 2016. Sidhu was reportedly awarded the Rajya Sabha nomination to prevent him from joining the Aam Aadmi party.[89] However, he resigned from the Rajya Sabha on July 18, 2016.[90]

On September 2, 2016, Sidhu, along with brothers Pargat Singh and Bains, formed a new political front – Aawaaz-e-Punjab, which claimed to fight against those working against Punjab.[91]

Indian National Congress[ edit ]

In January 2017, Sidhu joined the Indian National Congress. In the 2017 Assembly of Punjab elections, he ran from Amritsar East and won the election by a margin of 42,809 votes.[92] He was sworn in as a minister in the cabinet.[93]

As Minister for Tourism and Local Authorities, Sidhu contributed to the Virasat project[94] to revitalize India’s only handicraft on the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage List.[95] This craft of making brass utensils is practiced by the Thatheras of the Jandiala guru area, which is part of his former Lok Sabha constituency in Amritsar.[96]

In 2018, Sidhu went to Pakistan to swear in the case of Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan. At the event he hugged the Pakistani army chief Qamar Javed Bajwa.[97] Then the Chief Minister of Punjab, Amrinder Singh, criticized him for it.[98]

In June 2019, Sidhu was dismissed from the Department of Local Authorities and the Department of Tourism by CM Amarinder Singh.[99]

On April 23, 2019, the Indian Electoral Commission banned Sidhu from campaigning for 72 hours for violating the Model Code. Earlier, the commission issued a notice to Sidhu for asking for votes on religious lines at a rally in Bihar’s Katihar district.

On July 14, 2019, Sidhu tweeted a copy of his resignation from the Punjab cabinet dated June 10, 2019 and addressed to Rahul Gandhi.[2][3] On July 20, 2019, the Chief Minister of Punjab, Captain Amarinder Singh, and the Governor of Punjab, V.P. Singh Badnore accepted Sidhu’s resignation. Sidhu later openly criticized the Punjab government for its handling of the sacrilege case, but the party described this as a diversity of views.

On 18 July 2021, Sidhu was appointed President of the Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee, replacing Shri Sunil Jakhar.

On September 28, 2021, Navjot Singh Sidhu resigned as President of the Punjab Congress. He sent his resignation letter to party leader Sonia Gandhi. But the high command refused his resignation.[104]

In the 2022 Punjab Legislative Assembly elections, Sidhu, who ran from the Amritsar East seat, lost to Aam Aadmi Party candidate Jeevan Jyot Kaur.[5]

Gurdwara Darbar Sahib Kartarpur Corridor [ edit ]

In August 2018, Navjot Singh Sidhu, former Indian cricketer, politician and current Minister of Tourism in the Punjab government, was invited to the oath-taking ceremony of the newly elected Prime Minister of Pakistan, Imran Khan. After being attacked for his decision to hug Qamar Javed Bajwa, the Pakistan Army Chief of Staff, Sidhu claimed that Bajwa promised him to open the corridor before Guru Nanak’s 550th birthday.[105][106]

Subsequently, in September 2018, the Pakistani government decided to open the Kartarpur corridor for visa-free entry of followers of Sikhism from India to Pakistan ahead of the 550th birthday of Guru Nanak.[107] After the corridor opening was confirmed by Pakistan’s Information and Broadcasting Minister Fawad Chaudhry, Navjot Singh Sidhu paid tribute to his cricket friend Imran Khan for taking this big step.[108]

In late November 2018, Sidhu became controversial with a photo of Khalistani separatist leader Gopal Singh Chawla, a controversial Khalistani separatist leader accused of having close ties to Hafiz Saeed. Sidhu denied these claims, claiming: “Thousands of people met me every day in Pakistan and clicked photos with me. How do I know who Chawla or Cheema is?”[109]

Pulwama attack[ edit ]

On February 15, 2019, during an appearance on the Kapil Sharma Show, Sidhu denounced the recent attack on Indian soldiers in Pulwama, Jammu and Kashmir as “cowardly and underhanded”. However, he found himself in controversy when he further asked: “For a handful of people, can you blame the entire nation of Pakistan and one individual?”[110]

The comments were met with severe criticism. BJP leader Giriraj Singh called for Sidhu’s expulsion from the Congress party.[111]

On February 16, it was reported that the Kapil Sharma Show had responded by removing Sidhu as a presenter and permanent guest and replacing him with Archana Puran Singh.[112]

Balakot airstrike [ edit ]

Sidhu criticized the Indian Air Force’s anti-terrorist operation at Balakot in Pakistan. He tweeted, “Did you uproot terrorists or trees?” Sidhu questioned the purpose of the Balakot airstrike.[113]

Conviction for manslaughter in traffic

Sidhu (aged 25 in 1988) along with his friend Rupinder Singh Sandhu (aka Bunny Sandhu) were accused of assaulting and killing a 65-year-old man named Gurnam Singh. On December 27, 1988, Sidhu and Sandhu parked their car near the Sheranwala Gate Crossing in Patiala. Gurnam Singh was driving his car to a bank and asked Sidhu to give them a seat. In the ensuing road traffic incident, Gurnam was beaten up by Sidhu, who fled the scene. Gurnam was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead.[114][115] According to one witness, Gurnam was killed by Sidhu with a blow to the head.[116]

Sidhu was arrested by Punjab police after the incident and held in Patiala prison for several days. He was charged with murder along with Sandhu as a co-defendant. Sidhu pleaded not guilty and denied all charges against him.[117] He claimed in court that he had been “wrongly implicated in this case by the complaining party”.[115] Jaswinder Singh, nephew of Gurnam Singh, claimed that he witnessed the crime and was prepared to testify before the Indian Supreme Court.[118] In September 1999 the trial court acquitted Sidhu.

In 2006, the High Court of Punjab and Haryana reversed the verdict of the lower court and found both guilty of culpable manslaughter for the death of Gurnam Singh in Patiala.[114] The court sent him to prison for three years for street rioting.[114]

Both convicts then appealed to the Supreme Court of India. In 2007, the Supreme Court suspended Sidhu’s sentence and granted him bail. The suspended sentence enabled him to contest the Amritsar-based Lok Sabha by-election.[119] In 2018, a bench led by Justices Chalemeswar and Sanjay Kishan Kaul released the two with a fine of £1,000 without jail time, saying “there was no evidence the death was caused by the single blow” delivered by Sidhu was performed. The court found that Sidhu did not use a weapon.[119][6]

The applicants (Gurnam Singh’s family) submitted an application for review to the Supreme Court. The court noted that the hand may also be used as a “alone weapon when a boxer, wrestler, cricketer or extremely physically fit person is delivering a punch”. The court said: “The blow was not delivered to a physically identical person, but to a 65-year-old person who is more than twice his age. Defendant No. 1 (Sidhu) cannot say that he was ignorant of the effect of the blow or plead ignorance in this regard.”, “It is not that anyone needs to remind him of the extent of the injury caused by a blow inflicted by him could cause consequences of domination must be borne.” Sidhu was found guilty of the offense of simple assault under Section 323 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). On May 19, 2022, the Supreme Court convicted him of voluntary injury (Section 323 of the Indian Penal Code) and sentenced him to a severe prison term of one year Section 323 (Penalty for Voluntarily Causing Injury) of the IPC provides for a maximum prison sentence of up to one year or a fine extending to Rs 1,000 or both can.[6]

He is being held in Patiala Prison along with his rival Shiromani Akali Dal, the leader Bikram Singh Majithia, against whom Sidhu ran in the 2022 Punjab Assembly elections.[116]

A 2016 Bollywood film Azhar, directed by Tony D’Souza, was based on the life of his teammate Mohammad Azharuddin and centers around match-fixing scandals in the late 90’s and 2000. Sidhu’s character was portrayed by Manjot Singh in the film. 121][122]

Shubhdeep Singh Sidhu (June 11, 1993 – May 29, 2022), better known by his stage name Sidhu Moose Wala, was an Indian singer, rapper, songwriter and actor associated with Punjabi music and Punjabi cinema. His songwriting career began with Ninja’s song “License,” and his singing career began with a duet song, “G Wagon.” After his debut, he collaborated with Brown Boyz on various tracks. Sidhu is widely regarded as one of the greatest Punjabi artists of his generation.[5][6] Additionally, he was considered a key figure in opening the door for Punjabi artists to mainstream music. In 2021 he joined the Indian National Congress political party and unsuccessfully contested the 2022 Punjab Legislative Assembly elections in Mansa.

Moose Wala burst into the mainstream with his track “So High.” In 2018 he released his debut album PBX 1 which peaked at number 66 on the Billboard Canadian Albums chart. After the album, he began releasing his songs independently. His 2019 single “47” entered the UK Singles Chart. In 2020, Moose Wala was named among 50 emerging artists by The Guardian.[7] Over 30 of his songs peaked on the UK Asian Charts, four of which topped the chart. Moose Wala was shot dead by unknown assailants on May 29, 2022; A Canada-based gangster active in the Punjab claimed responsibility for the murder, which police say was a high point in the rivalry between the gangs.[8] On June 23, 2022, his first posthumous single “SYL” was released.

Moose Wala’s lyrics and themes were often seen as controversial in India, and he was accused of promoting gun culture and challenging religious institutions [9] – as was the case of Mai Bhago, a revered figure of Sikhism. [10][11]. ] He faced legal challenges for promoting gun culture and for using inflammatory and inflammatory lyrics in his songs.[11][10]

Early life

Shubhdeep Singh Sidhu was from Moosa Village, Mansa District, Punjab, India.[12][13] He was born into a Jat Sikh family[4] to father Balkaur Singh and mother Charan Kaur.[14][13][15] He studied at Guru Nanak Dev Engineering College in Ludhiana and graduated with a degree in Electrical Engineering in 2016.[12][16] Moose Wala admired and was influenced by rapper Tupac Shakur. Rise to Fame

Moose Wala released his first song “G Wagon” while he was living in Brampton.[12] From 2018 he started live shows in India. He had also performed shows in Canada.[26] Moose Wala had his breakthrough in 2017 with the song “So High”, a gangster rap collaboration with Byg Byrd.[27] The song earned him the Best Lyricist Award at the Brit Asia TV Music Awards in 2017.[28] He continued his success with singles like “Issa Jatt”, “Tochan”, “Selfmade”, “Famous” and “Warning Shots”.[27]

He was nominated for the Best New Age Sensation Award for “Issa Jatt” at the 2018 PTC Punjabi Music Awards.[29] In August 2018, he released his first movie soundtrack song titled “Dollar” for the movie Dakuaan Da Munda.[30] In October 2018, Moose Wala released his debut album PBX 1 in the pop music genre with a touch of hip hop. The album entered the Canadian Albums Chart.[31] It earned him the Best Album award at the 2019 Brit Asia TV Music Awards, where Moose Wala also won the title of the year for “Legend”, Best International Male Act and Best Lyricist.[32]

[38] The song was followed by “Tibeyan Da Putt” which topped the iTunes chart and ranked #8 on the Apple Music chart in India.[39] His second studio album Snitches Get Stitches was released in May 2020, and in the same month he released the single Dear Mama to celebrate his mother’s birthday.[40] In June 2020, he collaborated with Amrit Maan on the song “Bambiha Bole”.[41] His music video was viewed over ten million times in 24 hours.[42] The song topped the charts in India and entered the top 50 on the Apple Music charts in Canada and New Zealand.[43][44][45] It topped the UK Asian charts and also reached the top 5 on the global YouTube chart.[46][47] In September 2020, Moose Wala released “Game” featuring Shooter Kahlon, which became his first song to chart on the Canadian Hot 100 by Billboard.[48]

In May 2021, Moose Wala released his third studio album, Moosetape. The album entered the New Zealand Albums Chart by Recorded Music NZ.[49] Singles from the album have charted on various international charts including Billboard Global 200, Canada Hot 100 and New Zealand Hot Singles Chart. On September 12, 2021 he performed with British rapper Mist at the Wireless Festival in London. Moose Wala was the first Indian singer to perform at this festival.[50]

In April 2022, Moose Wala released his debut EP, No Name, featuring AR Paisley, Mr. Capone-E and Sunny Malton,[51] which debuted at number 73 on Billboard’s Top Canadian Albums.[52] His songs “Last Ride”, “Levels”, “Never Fold” and “295” charted on the Billboard Canadian Hot 100 chart. “The Last Ride” peaked at #26, “Levels” at #32, and “Never Fold” at #97. Three of his songs were also featured on the Billboard Global Excl. US chart “The Last Ride” peaked at 103, “295” peaked at 73 and “Levels” peaked at 195.

After several successful songs with Humble Music, Moose Wala began releasing songs independently in 2018. He released the first song “Warning Shots”, a diss track attacking Karan Aujla’s track “Lafaafe”.[55] In the same year his debut album PBX 1 was released under T-Series, followed by the release of most of his tracks under his own label as well as tracks by other artists. In 2020 Moose Wala released his second studio album Snitches Get Stitches under his own label.[56] On August 31, 2020, Moose Wala officially launched his record label, 5911 Records.[57]

Moose Wala had a rivalry with Karan Aujla; both have responded to each other through songs, social media handles and live performances.[58][59] In addition, both singers have been criticized for singing songs that promote violence.[60] Elly Mangat, Sidhu and Aujla’s colleague at the time, revealed in an interview that the dispute between the two singers started when Sidhu’s video, which targeted Aujla in his song, was leaked to Aujla’s management and they threatened to attack Sidhu. After the incident, both began attacking each other on social media.[61][62] The rivalry was temporarily resolved until Aujla released a diss track “Lafaafe”, followed by Moose Wala’s “Warning Shot”. Aujla stated in an interview that he did not write the track “Lafaafe” and did not reveal anything about their rivalry, but did praise Sidhu’s work.

References to Mai Bhago

In September 2019, his song “Jatti Jeone Morh Wargi” was deemed inappropriate by Sikh leaders for using the name of Mai Bhago, a 17th-century Sikh warrior. Sikh delegations and Akali Dal leaders called for the song to be banned and subsequently filed complaints against Moose Wala in Mansa and Bathinda. Moosewala later apologized on social media and appeared at a hearing on the incident before the Sikh religious body Akal Takht in March 2020.[64]

References to the Khalistan Movement

In December 2020, Moose Wala released the single “Panjab: My Motherland” in support of the peasant protest against India’s Farm Laws of 2020, which featured clips of an orthodox militant Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale and speeches by Khalistan supporter Bharpur Singh Balbir in the late 1980s. [66][67][68] In an interview, Sidhu said that Khalistan means a pure place (पवित्र-स्थान), as it was under the rule of Maharaja Ranjit Singh, where people of all religions lived in harmony.[69]

At the time of his death, Moose Wala was facing criminal charges for promoting gun culture and violence. Two of the charges related to obscene scenes.[70]

In May 2020, two videos featuring Moose Wala went viral on social media: one showing him being trained to use an AK-47 with the support of police officers,[71] and the other showing him being used with a personal pistol. [72] The six officers who helped him were suspended after the incident.[73] On May 19, he was posted under two sections of the Gun Act.[74] Police began raids to find Moose Wala, but he fled to evade arrest.[75][76][77] On June 2, Barnala District Court denied an early bail motion for Moose Wala and five accused officers.[78]

On June 6, 2020, he was fined by Nabha police because his car windows were tinted black beyond the legal limit and he was allowed to leave despite being guarded; Moose Wala falsely told officers he was already out on bail.[3] In July he joined the police investigation and received regular bail.[79] That month he released a single titled “Sanju,” in which he compared himself to actor Sanjay Dutt, who was also arrested under the gun law.[80] Indian sport shooter Avneet Sidhu criticized the song and called out Moose Wala for promoting gun culture. The next day, a case was filed against him for publishing the song.[83] In an interview, Moose Wala claimed he was deliberately targeted by some news channels and lawyers.[18]

Moose Wala made his Punjabi cinematic debut in the film Yes I Am Student under his own production company, Jatt Life Studios.[84] The film was directed by Tarnvir Singh Jagpal and written by Gill Raunta.[85] In 2019, Moose Wala appeared in Teri Meri Jodi.[86] In June 2020, he announced another film entitled Gunah.[87] On August 22, 2021, he released the teaser of his upcoming film Moosa Jatt, starring Sweetaj Brar and directed by Tru Makers.[88] On August 24, 2021, he announced his new film Jattan Da Munda Gaun Lagya, directed by Amberdeep Singh, to be released on March 18, 2022.[89]

Moose Wala actively campaigned for his mother, Charan Kaur, who won the sarpanch election in Moosa village in December 2018.[90]

On December 3, 2021, Moose Wala joined Congress to participate in the 2022 Punjab Legislative Assembly election. Nazar Singh Manshahia, the MLA of the Mansa Congress, revolted and opposed Moosewala’s candidacy.[93] Moose Wala received only 20.52% of the Mansa constituency vote, losing to Vijay Singla of the Aam Aadmi party by a margin of 63,323 votes.[94]

During the 2022 election, Moose Wala was prosecuted under Section 188 of the Indian Penal Code for violating the Electoral Code of Conduct. He had conducted a door-to-door campaign in the Mansa constituency after the admissible campaign time had expired.[95]

On April 11, 2022, Moose Wala released a song titled “Scapegoat” in which he laments his failure in the 2022 Punjab State Assembly elections. The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) claimed that Moose Wala implied through his song that Punjab voters are “gaddar” (translated traitors) for voting for AAP. They also claimed that Moose Wala’s song perpetuated the “anti-Punjab” mentality of Congress and demanded a response from the party’s state unit president, Amrinder Singh Raja Warring, as to whether he supported Moose Wala’s views.[97]

Death

Moose Wala was shot dead in his car by unknown assailants on May 29, 2022 in Jawaharke Village, Mansa District. According to police, the Lawrence Bishnoi gang initially claimed responsibility for the murder in an unverified Facebook post, which Bishnoi denied,[101] but has been held by Punjab police since June 2022 and dubbed the “mastermind” by officers in considered the murder.[102][103]

According to police, Sidhu Moose Wala left his home at around 4:30 p.m. with his cousin Gurpreet Singh and neighbor Gurwinder Singh. Moose Wala drove his black Mahindra Thar SUV. He went to his aunt’s house in Barnala.[104] When the SUV reached the village of Jawaharke at 5:30 am, it was intercepted and blocked by two other cars.[105] Thirty rounds were fired during the incident, during which two other men were also injured.[106] Moose Wala also fired back at the attackers with his pistol. After the shooting, the attackers left the scene.[104] His father took Moose Wala to the Mansa Civil Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.[107]

Moose Wala was among 424 people whose police security was reduced or removed entirely the day before in preparation for the anniversary of Operation Blue Star, leaving him with just two commands, compared to four previously. At the time of the incident, Moose Wala was traveling with the police squad in his private car, accompanied by two other people, rather than his bulletproof vehicle.[109][110] According to his friends, Moose Wala didn’t take his safety with him as the Thar SUV he wanted to drive couldn’t hold five people.[104]

According to police, the Lawrence Bishnoi gang have claimed to have killed Moose Wala to avenge the 2021 murder of an Akali leader, Vicky Middukhera. However, Moose Wala’s aide has been claimed by the Bishnoi gang to have played a role in the assassination of Middukhera – there is no legal evidence to support this.[105] A Canadian Punjabi mobster identified as Satinder Singh aka Goldy Brar claimed responsibility for the murder. Brar, a close associate of mobster Lawrence Bishnoi, claimed that his “Punjab Module” (gang) carried out the shooting. Both Brar and Bishnoi have criminal cases against them in India. Punjab Police later confirmed Bishnoi’s involvement.[111][112][113]

Subsequently, Moose Wala’s father revealed in FIR that Sidhu received death threats from gangsters for extortion purposes, a statement confirmed by singer Mika Singh.

Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann condemned the killing. He called Moose Wala “a cultural icon of Punjab”, expressed his shock and sadness at his death and offered his condolences to the stricken family. Mann ordered an investigation into why the security of Moose Wala was reduced by Punjab police two days earlier. He also announced the establishment of a Judicial Commission, headed by a sitting judge of the Punjab and Haryana High Court, to investigate the murder.[115] Numerous celebrities expressed their condolences on social media.[117][118]

Police found bullets from a Russian AN-94 assault rifle and a pistol at the scene. Police have arrested six suspects in the incident from Uttarakhand state.[105][119] On May 30, one of the murder suspects was arrested by Punjab police while hiding among the pilgrims of Gurudwara Shri Hemkund Sahib.[120]

On May 30, the Delhi branch of the Indian National Congress held a protest near the residence of Aam Aadmi Party leader Arvind Kejriwal, who blamed the AAP-ruled Punjab government for the incident and blamed the state government’s decision to reduce Moosewala’s security coverage. [122]

His autopsy was performed by 5 doctors and the event was videotaped. According to autopsy reports, Moose Wala’s body sustained 19 gunshot wounds and he died of gunshot wounds within 15 minutes of being shot.[123]

Cremation of Sidhu Moose Wala on May 31, 2022

Moose Wala was cremated on May 31 in his ancestral village. His last rites were performed on his farmland.[15][124]

On June 3, Lawrence Bishnoi reportedly admitted involvement in the murder and a rivalry with Moose Wala.[125][126]

On July 3, Ankit Sirsa was arrested by Delhi police for being one of the gunmen involved in the murder.[127]

On July 20, gangsters Manpreet Mannu and Jagrup Rupa, suspected of involvement in the killing of Moosewala, were shot dead by Punjab police.[128]

On July 26, Punjab police arrested the last fleeing gunman, Deepak Mundi.[129]

Before the 2022 Sangrur Lok Sabha by-election, the Congress Party had used images of Moose Wala in their election song. Moose Wala’s family made a public appeal to political parties and individuals, urging them not to use his name for political or personal motives. The Tribune newspaper reported that this call was a setback for the Congress party, as it intended to use public sympathy for Moose Wala’s death for electoral gain in the by-election.[130]

Bhagwant Mann announced on June 3 a cancer hospital and sports stadium to commemorate Sidhu Moose Wala.[131]

On June 8, the City of Brampton, Canada, passed a motion in City Council to commission a giant mural to be painted by a local artist and to plant a tree in the singer’s honor.[132]

Punjabi-speaking singer Prem Dhillon released a tribute song, “Ain’t Died In Vain”, dedicated to Moose Wala on June 16. Posthumously, on his 29th birthday, Moose Wala received a tribute from his fans when the Times Square billboards in New York City were hired to play his songs.[134]

On June 17, Canadian rapper Drake performed two of Moose Wala’s singles “295” and Moosetape’s “G-Shit” in commemoration of his debut radio show called Table for One on Sound42.

On July 25, the Pak Moose Literary Society honored Wala with the Waris Shah International Award.[136]

On July 28, Moose Wala was posthumously honored with the Dadasaheb Phalke Award Iconic Award.[137]

Sidhu Moose Wala was a close friend of Karan Aujla, but a war of words started between the two when Karan allegedly leaked Sidhu’s songs before the songs were officially recorded. In 2018 Karan tried to defame Sidhu by releasing the songs “Up & Down” along with Deep Jandu and “Lafaafe” with Sanam Bhullar. Moosewala responded by releasing his song “Warning Shots” in which he attacked Karan.

The song also talks about the undivided Punjab, the anti-Sikh riots of 1984 and the raising of the Sikh flag at the Red Fort during the peasant movement.

Sonia Sidhu is the MP for Brampton South. She was elected as the Liberal candidate on October 19, 2015.[6] Before politics, she worked in healthcare for over 18 years as a diabetes educator and research coordinator. Sonia has worked as a volunteer on political campaigns at all three levels of government, and she has also volunteered with numerous organizations.[7]

In Parliament, she sits on the House of Commons Standing Committee on Health and has also been appointed a member of the Special Committee on Pay Equity. She is also the Chair and Liberal Caucus Champion for the All-Party Diabetes Caucus. MP Sidhu is also Secretary General of the Canada-India Parliamentary Friendship Group and board member of the Canada-Poland and Canada-Portugal Parliamentary Friendship Groups. Bardish Chagger (born April 6, 1980) is a Canadian politician who served as Cabinet Secretary from 2015 to 2021. A member of the Liberal Party, Chagger has since sat in the House of Commons as MP for riding Waterloo in the 2015 general election.[2][3]

Chagger previously held the portfolios of Prime Minister in the House of Commons and Secretary of State for Small Business and Tourism.[4] Chagger was the first female Prime Minister in the House of Commons in Canadian history.

Early life and education[edit]

Chagger’s parents immigrated to Waterloo from Punjab, India in the 1970s. Her family is Sikh.[5] Her father, Gurminder “Gogi” Chagger, was active in the Liberal Party and an admirer of Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau. Chagger’s first involvement in politics came in the 1993 general election as a 13-year volunteer for Andrew Telegdi’s successful campaign in Waterloo.

She attended the University of Waterloo with the aim of becoming a nurse, but went on to become executive assistant to Telegdi, which represented Waterloo in the Liberal House of Commons from 1993 to 2008.[6]

Chagger graduated from the University of Waterloo with a Bachelor of Science degree.[7] Following the defeat of Telegedi in 2008, Chagger became director of special events at the Kitchener-Waterloo Multicultural Centre.[7]

Federal policy[edit]

Chagger volunteered for Justin Trudeau’s bid for party chairmanship in 2013 and subsequently became the Liberal Party’s candidate in the newly formed Waterloo riding. She received 49.7% of the vote, defeating two-year Conservative incumbent Peter Braid, who had previously ousted her former employer Andrew Telegdi.

Minister for Small Business and Tourism[edit]

On November 4, 2015, Chagger was sworn in as Minister for Small Business and Tourism.[8]

As a result of the 18 July 2018 cabinet reshuffle, Chagger’s small business responsibilities were transferred to Mary Ng and Mélanie Joly assumed responsibilities for tourism.

Prime Minister in the House of Commons[edit]

On August 19, 2016, Chagger was sworn in as Prime Minister in the House of Commons, replacing Dominic Leblanc in that position. She retained her duties as Minister for Small Business and Tourism until the July 18, 2018 cabinet reshuffle.[4]

On March 10, 2017, Chagger, in her role as Speaker of the House of Commons, published a discussion paper entitled Modernizing the Rules of Procedure of the House of Commons[10], which sought to implement various ways in which the House of Commons’ process and practice could be made more accountable, more predictable and available to all Members of Parliament and the public. The modernization paper proposed reforms to the House of Commons such as introducing electronic voting, shortening Friday sittings, reforming the question period including a prime minister’s question period, changes to the prorogation process, greater powers for the Speaker to split votes, and committee studies on collective bills and legislative programs .

Opposition MPs expressed concern about the reforms proposed in the discussion paper, particularly proposals to implement legislative programming and the abolition or modification of Friday sessions in the House of Commons. In late April 2017, Chagger sent a letter to her counterparts, then New Democratic House Speaker Murray Rankin and Conservative House Speaker Candice Bergen, to inform them that the government would abandon several of the key proposals that part of the modernization paper. such as changes to the Friday session, legislative programming and electronic voting.[11] But they would proceed with proposals that were expressly part of the Liberal electoral platform of 2015, including a decision to introduce Prime Minister’s Question Time, which would ask the government to publish a report after the use of prorogation and give the Speaker of the House permission to do so separate votes or committee studies on different parts of a bill that he or she approves of as everything.[12]

WE Charity Ethics Investigation[edit]

In July 2020, Chagger was the first witness to testify before a parliamentary committee investigating the award of an individual contract to implement the Canada Student Service Grant (CSSG) to WE Charity, an organization with ties to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Treasury Secretary Bill Morneau. Chagger was the one who signed the deals with WE Charity and had met with WE Charity days before Trudeau announced the student program. It was initially reported that the WE charity would receive a payment of at least $19.5 million, but it was later announced that the contract would give them up to $43.5 million to run the student volunteer scholarship program paid. Chagger testified that it was the civil service that recommended outsourcing the grants program to third parties via a contribution agreement, specifically Rachel Wernick, Deputy Secretary of State for Employment and Social Development.[15]

Sahota attended Brampton’s Central Peel Secondary School from 1993 to 1998, graduating with an honors bachelor’s degree in political science and peace studies from McMaster University in 2003.[8] She then attended Western Michigan University’s Cooley Law School, graduating in 2007.

From 2007 to 2012, Sahota practiced law in Cleveland, Ohio, specializing in commercial disputes.[9][10] After that she became a lawyer.

Sahota sought and won the Liberal nomination for the newly created riding of Brampton North on March 1, 2015.

The general election campaign was fraught with some controversy as Sahota’s campaign criticized leaflets circulated by her opponent, Conservative incumbent Parm Gill, which were allegedly deliberately aimed at aligning Sahota with former Liberal Party MP Ruby Dhalla confound. Sahota defeated Gill and won the election.

After her election, Sahota was appointed to both the Standing Committee on the Status of Women and the Standing Committee on Procedure and Household Affairs. She was then appointed to the Special Committee on Electoral Reform. On February 1, 2017, she was elected Chair of the Federal Liberal Ontario Caucus by her peers. As Caucus Chair, she chairs meetings, moderates discussions, and serves as a key liaison between Ontario’s Liberal MPs and the Prime Minister’s Office and Cabinet.
