Prayers and Meditations consists of excerpts from the mother’s spiritual diaries. Most of them date from 1912 to 1917. The 313 prayers reproduced here were chosen for publication by the mother. They are written in French and appear here in English translation.
A small collection of prayers – about one-fifth of the total – was published in English in 1941. Sri Aurobindo translated some of these prayers himself and in the other cases revised translations by disciples.
This book contains excerpts from a journal written during years of intense yoga discipline. It can serve as a spiritual guide for three main categories of seekers: those committed to self-mastery, those seeking to find the path that leads to the Divine, and those striving to become more and more consecrated to the Divine work. – The mother

Although my whole being is theoretically consecrated to You, oh sublime Master, who are the life, the light and the love in all things, I still find it difficult to carry out this consecration in detail. It took me several weeks to learn that the reason for this written meditation, its justification, lies in the fact that I address it to You daily. In this way, each day I will materialize a little of the conversation I so often have with you; I’ll make you my confession as best I can; not because I think I can tell you something – because you are everything yourself, but our artificial and external way of seeing and understanding is, if one may say so, alien to you, contrary to your nature. By turning to you, by immersing myself in your light the moment I look at these things, little by little I will see them more for what they really are – until the day when I made me one with you, I will have nothing more to say to you, because then I will be you. That’s the goal I would achieve; all my efforts will strive more and more towards this victory. I aspire to the day when I can no longer say “I” because I will be you.
How many times a day do I act without my action being consecrated to You; I am immediately aware of this through an indefinable unease that expresses itself in the sensitivity of my body through a pang in my heart. I then make my action objective and it seems ridiculous, childish or censurable to me; I lament, I’m sad for a moment, until I immerse myself in you and lose myself there with childlike trust, awaiting from you the inspiration and strength needed to right the fault in me and around me – two things , which are one; for I now have a constant and accurate perception of the universal unity that determines an absolute interdependence of all actions.

I said yesterday to this young Englishman who seeks you with such sincere desire that I have finally found you that Union is permanent. Indeed, this is the state of which I am aware. All my thoughts go to you, all my actions are consecrated to you; Your presence is an absolute, unchanging, unchanging fact to me, and your peace dwells in my heart constantly. But I know that this state of union is poor and precarious compared to what I can achieve tomorrow, and I am still far, no doubt very far, from that identification in which I will completely lose the concept of the “I”. , this “I” that I still use to express myself, but which is always a constraint, like a term unsuitable to express the thought that is looking for expression. It seems to me indispensable for human communication, but everything depends on what this “I” manifests; and how often when I speak it is you speaking within me, for I have lost the sense of separateness.
But all this is still in its infancy and will continue to grow towards perfection. What reassuring certainty lies in this serene trust in Your omnipotence!
You are everything, everywhere and in everything, and this body that acts is your own body, as is the visible universe in its entirety; It is you who breathe, think and love in this substance which, being yourself, wants to be your willing servant.
