Why praying for your spouse is important?

Praying together increases trust and intimacy with spouse:

Intimacy is built on trust, and trust is built on how we respond to being vulnerable with each other. Praying together helps you show and receive trust that strengthens the bonds of intimacy in your relationship.

10 Powerful Prayers for My Wife

In speeches, articles, and blog posts over the years, I’ve happily shared this time-tested adage: The family that prays together stays together. I believe that with all my heart. As author Tim Keller puts it, “Prayer is both a conversation and an encounter with God.” Susan and I enjoy having this alone encounter with God, and we also enjoy spending our prayer time together. We pray together almost every day.

It is so important for married couples to pray together. If you haven’t made a habit of praying with your spouse, it can feel uncomfortable at first, but then it becomes something you will find comforting and encouraging. We need to encourage couples around the world to consciously pray together. Here are some of the benefits:

1. Praying together is humbling:

As you pray for your concerns and problems, stay humble as you share with God and your spouse what is troubling you, tempting you, or what you need to find out. When you pray to God, not only do you speak and listen to him, you also realize that he knows all things and controls all things.

2. Prayer teaches you to focus on others:

When you spend time talking and praying about problems and concerns together, you can see your spouse’s life and problems in a better light. Prayer also helps you focus on your spouse and others.

3. Praying together promotes vulnerability and grace:

Prayers of confession or asking God for help against a temptation allow you to be vulnerable and show forgiveness and mercy to one another. It may feel counterintuitive, but that vulnerability can also strengthen the love and affection you have for one another.

4. Praying together increases trust and intimacy with spouse:

Intimacy is built on trust, and trust is built on how we respond to being vulnerable with one another. Praying together helps you show and receive trust that strengthens the bonds of intimacy in your relationship.

5. Praying together strengthens the bond of marriage:

Prayer is also a way to seek God’s wisdom together. When you pray and agree on matters, that discipline then builds unity and strength in the marriage. And prayer is also the place where you can fight together for your marriage when the difficult days come.

6. Praying together will help your spouse better understand your problems and needs:

As you pray together about your struggles and concerns, you will also know how to pray better for one another throughout the week as you get to know each other better. And prayer also enlightens us on how to better help and love one another.

I really like the quote about prayer from an actor playing C.S. Lewis in the movie Shadowlands: “I pray because I can’t help myself. I pray because I’m helpless. I pray because the need pours out of me all the time, waking and sleeping. It doesn’t change God, it changes me.”

8. Praying together reminds you that God is the only source of life, truth, love and hope:

As you pray together, center your mind, heart, and marriage on God. They make your marriage God centered. You share with Him your deepest needs and desires, hopes and dreams… together.

These are just some of the best reasons I want to encourage you to pray together, more often if you are already doing it, or start now if you have never done it. Share these 10 mom prayers with your wife today!

10 Powerful Prayers for My Wife

When people face a serious crisis, they pray. A friend of mine had a non-religious grandfather who fought in World War II. He used to utter the phrase, “There are no atheists in foxholes and hospitals.” I’m sure he wasn’t the first to say that. Why wait for a crisis? Studies confirm this fact – couples who pray together stay together. It’s amazing how many problems are resolved when a couple pray diligently and ask God for help.

Here are a few tips:

Pray with your wife at the same time each day. Limit interruptions. Let your children know that you will both pray, and expect them to give you a few minutes of peace. Take a few moments to talk together about what you will be praying for. If you’re embarrassed about praying, that’s okay! Just do it…even if it’s only 30 seconds…it’s a start. Pray for your marriage. Prayer is a high level of family communication. Here are 10 things to pray specifically for your marriage.

1. Pray for one another.

Scripture is consistently clear as to the focus of energy in a relationship; it should always have a “different” orientation. When we pray primarily for our spouse, we are likely to:

Be willing to be a part of the answer to this prayer.

Evaluate our spouse more consciously.

Love our spouse more deeply.

Avoid marital conflicts.

Here are 10 mom prayers to share with your wife to help her throughout the year.

2. Pray for that day (today).

Today is the most important moment in a marriage. Not what we might do another day, but how our marriage is working right now. When we specifically ask God to be a part of our today, we are more likely to preserve God in every moment.

3. Pray to be the presence of Christ in your marriage.

That’s more than WWJD (What Would Jesus Do). This means understanding that God uses us to actually be the presence of Christ. Be Christ to your wife. Be Christ to your children. Be Christ in the house.

4. Pray that your marriage will have a positive impact on others.

“That you may be blameless and pure, blameless children of God in a distorted and crooked generation. Then you will shine among them like stars in heaven, if you hold fast to the word of life” (Philippians 2:15-16a).

5. Pray for your partner’s dreams.

This is helpful because it requires us to listen and appreciate our partner’s dreams. By understanding our partner’s dreams, we are, by definition, more loving husbands.

6. Pray for your children.

Then let them know that you pray for them every day. When children know that their parents are actually praying for them and that they can depend on those prayers every day, that knowledge is powerful.

7. Pray to become a better husband.

Jack Nicholson’s classic line in As Good as it Gets testifies, “You make me want to be a better man.” Ask God to help you be a better husband and do so while you are with your wife pray. Humility and love in one breath.

8. Pray for wisdom.

Parenting is hard enough. Pray for wisdom. Then you believe that God honors your prayer.

9. Pray for a family vision.

Both as a marriage and as a family, saving time is easy. Pray for a guiding, overarching family vision. If you need it, here are 10 ways to set a vision for your life.

10. Pray for protection.

Families are vulnerable in our culture. Relationships are prone to many stresses. Our commitment to fidelity, family values, and faith is under constant attack. We cannot fight this alone. We just have to pray together.

For Measure: Pray for Peace.

The song puts it this way: “Let there be peace on earth and let it begin with me.” Let peace begin with you, in prayer and in your home. “Lord, make me an instrument of your peace…” Amen.

How do I pray for my partner?

Lord Jesus Christ, thank you that you can satisfy our every desire and need. You have said that if we delight ourselves in you, you will give us the desires of our hearts. Please help us to encourage each other to trust in you for every aspect of our lives and relationship. Help us to spur each other on in our faith.

What happens in a marriage without intimacy?

Lack of physical intimacy can lead to decreased feelings of satisfaction with the relationship. An individual may harbor deep feelings of loneliness, anger, or resentment towards a partner. In some cases, dissatisfaction with the lack of sex in your marriage can lead to other issues such as infidelity.

10 Powerful Prayers for My Wife

Every marriage has its ups and downs; This includes how much time you and your partner spend between the sheets. While not every relationship should be based solely on sex, sex is an integral part of your connection with your partner. If you haven’t felt connected to your partner or valued in your relationship lately, there are some steps you can take to rekindle passion and save your marriage.

Live in a sexless marriage? You are not the only one

Are you struggling with your sexless marriage? Book an online couples therapy session.

The most important thing to know about living in a marriage without sex is that you are not alone. While a sexless marriage is defined as couples having sex fewer than 10 times a year, about 15% of couples report not having had sex with their partner in the past six months to a year. Twenty percent of these couples were under the age of forty.

The lack of physical fulfillment in a relationship is something no one wants to talk about – whether with their partner, a friend or a doctor. Still, more people search Google for tips on how to cope with a no-sex marriage than any other marriage problem. So how often should you have sex in a relationship?

Sexless Marriage Quiz: How Much is Too Much and How Much is Not Enough?

When you and your partner aren’t having sex, it’s hard not to play the numbers game. It doesn’t help to break down how many times you and your partner have had sex in the past month or year — or count the months or years since you’ve had physical intimacy. The “right” number is different for everyone.

What works for one couple may not work for another. Each couple navigates their relationship and finds out for themselves how often they need to make love to keep both of them happy. Figuring out how often you should take that alone time — away from the phones, the kids, and other responsibilities — is something that takes time and patience.

lack of sexuality in a marriage

There are many reasons why a couple stopped having sex. It could be that one of you doesn’t feel like it, or you can both be busy with work or parenting. Perhaps the life you share with your partner — and your time between the sheets — has become routine and less exciting. Of course, good old-fashioned stress is often a culprit.

Other health factors — including physical, emotional, and mental health — can also interfere with your bedroom activities. Some people with decreased sex drive may have a medical condition that affects their desire, or psychological trauma may make them uncomfortable in sexual situations. Other emotional issues — like betrayal in your current or previous relationship — can make it difficult to make and keep that connection with your partner.

Remember that gender diminution is typical in every marriage. If lack of sex leads to lack of intimacy, then this is a problem that deserves your attention. Lack of sexuality in a marriage is not one-sided. Both partners notice, but one partner usually speaks louder than the other.

How to fix a sexless marriage

If you’re stuck in a no-sex marriage, it’s important to address the issue as soon as possible. Many couples don’t know how to communicate their physical desires and needs, which can lead to further problems. Living in an unfulfilling relationship often creates resentment between both parties, which can increase discord in the marriage. Learning how to approach your intimate life head-on will be crucial to reinvigorating the spice in your marriage.

Make an appointment with your family doctor

The first assumption that spouses suffer at the end of a sexless marriage is that our partner’s disinterest is related to their attractiveness or desirability. Before you assume that your partner’s decreased sex drive has something to do with you, try to find medical causes first. If your partner — or you — has been experiencing a lower sex drive lately, start by ruling out physical explanations.

Certain medical conditions, such as chronic pain or illness, can reduce cravings. Various medications — including antidepressants and birth control — can also affect our sex drive. Talk to your doctor about your symptoms; If there is no physical explanation for your loss of interest, the problem is emotional or psychological.

Remember that sex and intimacy go hand in hand

Just because you’re not having sex doesn’t mean you can’t have a fulfilling relationship. However, when your partner starts to feel like someone you share the space with, it’s not surprising that your intimate life has taken a nosedive. Many couples who are married without sex feel just as satisfied with their choice of partner because they are engaging in other forms of intimacy.

Remember that both sex and intimacy are crucial elements of a happy marriage that are interconnected. Through other intimate acts like touching, flirting, laughing — and just being close to each other — you can bond with your partner even without sex. However, marriages that lack this connection are more likely to lose their passion. On the other hand, there are very few sexually satisfying marriages without intimacy.

Come up with a plan

While sex is supposed to feel spontaneous and fun, that’s not always the case. Many sex therapists advise their patients that reactivating your intimacy is more difficult; The longer you ignore the problem. The longer you abstain from sex and intimacy, the less you desire it. On the other hand, more sex makes you want it.

Make a plan for your sex life. Reviving your intimacy doesn’t necessarily mean going from zero to 180. You and your partner can start slowly. There are different forms of intimacy in marriage: many sex experts suggest starting with more kissing. Those amazing pleasure centers in your head get activated after an earth-shattering orgasm? Kissing stimulates the same parts of your brain.

If you’re not having sex, chances are you’re not engaging in nonsexual forms of intimacy either. Try cuddling, kissing, or just laying in bed with your partner in your birthday suit. These are all ways you can slowly increase intimacy in your marriage, making the transition to sex more than a lot easier.

Pencil In Your Alone Time

Whether you’re starting out slowly or trying to have sex more often, create a schedule with your partner. Choose a time that works best for both of you and be present in the same room. You don’t necessarily have to make sex a hard boundary; Use this time and space to improve your intimacy — whether that involves sex or not. Bringing your attention and focus to your partner on a regular basis makes it routine. Over time it will become a habit you will never break.

stop delaying it

Living in a sexless marriage complicates the emotional connection you have with your partner, not just your physical one. When you have sex, the chemical oxytocin flows through your body, connecting you to your partner. Both partners need to take responsibility, both for themselves and for their relationship. That means you get on the same page with each of your sexual wants and needs.

Many couples do not know how to address the issue, or choose not to address it. The asexual partner may react negatively to their spouse, bringing up the issue and suggesting alternatives to reconnect. This side effect can make your partner stop asking about your sex life or ignore the issue altogether. Not asking is better than dealing with humiliation and disappointment. Once you stop talking about it, your sexless marriage begins to affect other elements of your relationship.

Listen to your partner’s concerns with an open mind; Even if it doesn’t seem important to you, it is important to them. It’s okay to start small; Work with your spouse to create intimate scenarios with each other, even if they aren’t sex related. Make an effort to reconnect with your partner every day, even if it starts with a conversation. Communicating without judgment or fear is key to restoring intimacy in your marriage.

Make it spicier!

Are you struggling with your sexless marriage? Book an online couples therapy session.

Many couples going through a dry spell in the bedroom are simply bored; They know exactly what’s going to happen in bed when they’re used to their partner’s same old moves. To reignite passion in your marriage, spicing up your bedroom game can do wonders. There are several items that you can use to make sex more exciting.

Regardless of your age or how long you’ve been with your partner, introducing toys and lube can add extra stimulation to your erogenous zones. This is an opportunity to talk to your partner about what makes you feel safe and uncomfortable. Choosing toys and lubes together to try out can be fun in itself.

For couples where a physical problem is causing a low sex drive, there are also ways to relieve your symptoms. Men with erectile dysfunction can use prescription or over-the-counter pills and creams to help maintain an erection. Women who suffer from vaginal dryness or lack of stimulation in their erogenous zones can find various lubricants, creams and gels that enhance the sexual experience.

Seek professional help

While most couples don’t think their intimate life affects their marriage, it does. Couples who don’t see sex as an element of maintaining their relationship are more likely to live in sexless marriages. If you’ve tried talking to your partner but can’t seem to get any further, speaking to a licensed professional can guide you through this hurdle in your marriage.

Sex therapists are trained to help couples communicate their needs and desires to each other. They facilitate a conversation that can be delicate between two people. If you’re having trouble finding a sex therapist, our online couples therapy can help.

Is an open marriage a sin?

Open marriages also violate the prohibition against adultery in the Ten Commandments. The definition of sexual immorality in Christianity includes the practices of open marriage and therefore it is considered an immutable reason for a dissolution of marriage.

10 Powerful Prayers for My Wife

form of non-monogamy

Open marriage is a form of non-monogamy in which the partners of a dyadic marriage agree that each may engage in extramarital sexual relations without it being viewed by them as infidelity, and consider or establish an open relationship despite the implicit monogamy of marriage. There are several forms of open marriage, such as swinging and polyamory, in which each partner has varying degrees of influence over their spouse’s activities.

Terminology[edit]

A general definition of an open marriage is that there is an agreement between the two partners to have some level of sexual interaction outside of the couple.[1] There are several forms of open marriage, each of which has varying degrees of influence over the activities of their spouse.

The concept of open marriage comes from sociology and anthropology. In the 1960s, researchers used “closed marriage” to indicate the practices of communities and cultures where individuals should marry due to social conventions and prohibitions, and open marriages where individuals were given the opportunity to make their own choice of spouse. [2] [3]

Nena O’Neill and George O’Neill changed the meaning of the term with the publication of their book Open Marriage in 1972. The O’Neills describe open marriage as a relationship in which each partner has room for personal growth and individual outside friendships can develop rather than obsessively focusing (“being closed”) on their couple relationship and family unit. Most of the book describes approaches to revitalizing marriage in the areas of trust, role flexibility, communication, identity, and equality. Chapter 16, entitled Love Without Jealousy, devoted 20 pages to the thesis that an open marriage could potentially involve some form of sexuality with other partners. Fueled by the O’Neills’ frequent appearances on television and in magazine articles, the redefinition entered the public consciousness, and open marriage became synonymous with sexually non-monogamous marriage.

In her 1977 book The Marriage Premise, Nena O’Neill advocated sexual fidelity in a chapter of the same name. As she later said, “The whole area of extramarital sex is delicate. I don’t think we ever saw it as a concept for the majority, and it certainly didn’t prove to be one.”[4]

Definition problems[edit]

The importance of open marriage may vary from study to study, depending on how each researcher determined their selection criteria.

Individuals could claim to have open marriages if their spouses would not consent. Studies and articles that survey people without considering their marital status may not obtain accurate information about the actual “open” status of marriage. Blumstein and Schwartz asked more than 6,000 couples whether or not they allowed sex outside of their relationship. Questioned individually, the partners of some couples gave very different answers to this question; the corresponding answers were from a married couple

“We’ve never talked about cheating, but none of us believe in it. I don’t think I would ever forgive him. I don’t think I would be able to do that. I dont know. I have not encountered this situation.” (Blumstein & Schwartz, 1983, p. 287) [5]

“Sure, we have an understanding. It’s ‘You do what you want. Never go back to the same one.’ You see, this is where going back to the same person the second time will screw up your mind.” (Blumstein & Schwartz, 1983, p. 286)[5]

In principle, couples are allowed to marry openly, but not to have sex outside of marriage. Studies that define open marriage by agreement only will tend to report a higher incidence than studies that define open marriage by agreement and behavior. Spaniel and Cole found that 7 percent of couples would consider open marriage, but only 1.7 percent of couples reported open marriages that actually involved extramarital sex.[6] Blumstein and Schwartz found that 15 percent of married couples share an agreement that allows extramarital sex, but only about 24 percent of men and 22 percent of women (or 6 percent and 5 percent of the total, respectively) had such an agreement , actually received during extramarital sex in the previous year. [5]

Researchers have applied open marriage in overly narrow terms when Hunt used it to refer to specifically vibrating couples who meet with other vibrating couples to swap mates.[7]

Open marriage is usually defined in terms of legally married opposite-sex partners, and therefore the data collected cannot be generalized to other types of open relationships. For example, cohabiting couples tend to show higher levels of extra-relationship intimacy compared to married couples.[5][8][9] Gay male couples show very high levels of open relationships compared to heterosexual couples.[5]

There is a lack of content on study and educational programs in open marriage and diverse relationship structures.[10] Because of this, there is a great deal of uncertainty about the topic.

Common misconceptions about non-monogamy[11] include that it goes against the principles of all religions and that it is synonymous with polygyny (a man with multiple wives) or polygamy (a marriage of many).[1]

Ideals of an open marriage

Living here and now combined with realistic expectations: There is a decrease in commitment and sacrifice towards long-term goals.

Personal Privacy: A greater respect for privacy than in a traditional marriage.

Open and honest communication: sharing, self-disclosure and productive struggle.

Role flexibility: Open partners demonstrate this clearly.

Open Companionship: Avoidance of the couple’s traditional marriage assumptions. This may include developing deep personal, sexual relationships with other members outside of their marriage.

Equality: Equality of power and responsibility.

Striving for identity: The uniqueness of an individual is valued, differences are not seen as a threat.

Mutual trust: assumption that everything is open and the partner is not a guarded property.[12]

Maintaining relationships[edit]

The impact of open marriage on relationships varies from couple to couple. Some couples report high marital satisfaction and have long open marriages.[13][14][15] Other couples are abandoning the open marriage lifestyle and returning to sexual monogamy. These couples may continue to believe that open marriage is a valid way of life, just not for them.

The extent to which open marriage actually contributes to divorce remains uncertain. Blumstein and Schwartz find that couples who engage in extramarital sex have a slightly higher risk of divorce, even if the couples agree to allow extramarital sex.[5] However, Rubin and Adams observed no significant difference in the risk of divorce between couples in open marriages and couples in sexually monogamous marriages.[16]

Problems with jealousy[edit]

A 1981 study concluded that around 80 percent of people in open marriages experienced jealousy because of their extramarital relationships.[17][18] Couples in open marriages experienced as much or more jealousy than people in sexually monogamous marriages.[19][20][15]

People who suffer from normal jealousy have at least nine strategies for dealing with jealousy. Problem-solving strategies include: improving the primary relationship, engaging in the rival relationship, demanding commitment, and self-evaluation. Emotion-focused strategies include: belittling partner or rival, developing alternatives, denial/avoidance, support/catharsis, and evaluation challenge. These strategies relate to emotion regulation, conflict management, and cognitive change.

Styles [ edit ]

Couples in open marriages may prefer different types of extramarital relationships. Couples who prefer extramarital relationships that emphasize love and emotional commitment have a polyamorous style of open marriage. Couples who favor extramarital relationships that emphasize sexual gratification and recreational friendships have a swinging style of open marriage. These distinctions may depend on psychological factors such as sociosexuality and contribute to the formation of separate polyamory and swinging communities. Despite their differences, however, all open marriages share common problems: the lack of social acceptance, the need to keep their relationship healthy and avoid neglect, and the need to manage jealous rivalry.

Many open couples establish rules that prohibit emotional attachment, having children outside of marriage, having sex outside of marriage, having sex outside of marriage with people both partners know, or having sex outside of marriage without using birth control.

Some open marriages are one-sided. Some situations that lead to this are situations where partners’ libidos differ greatly, or an illness renders a partner unable or unwilling to have sex. The couple can remain together while one partner seeks sexual gratification as he or she sees fit. The difference between these situations and a cheating situation is that both spouses are aware of and agree to the agreement.

Types of openness: from “polyamory style” to “swinging style”

Extramarital relationships differ in terms of the level of sexual involvement desired and the level of emotional involvement desired.[21] Given the possibility of non-monogamous intimacy, a given individual might be motivated more by either a desire for multiple sexual partners or a fuller erotic experience than monogamy, or by a desire for multiple others with whom they can form an emotional or familial bond.

Polyamory is motivated by a desire to expand love by developing emotionally involved relationships with extramarital partners. Swinging is motivated by a desire for physical gratification by engaging in sexual activity with extramarital partners. The distinction between polyamory and swinging applies to open marriages. The distinction between polyamory and swinging has appeared in academic literature[22][23][24][25] popular media[26][27] and on websites dedicated to polyamory[28][29] and swinging dedicate. 30][31] (The swing sites prefer to frame the distinction more along Gould’s[32] “utopian swinger” and “recreational swinger.”)

A polyamorous style of open marriage emphasizes the expansion of loving relationships through the development of emotional bonds with extramarital partners. A peppy style of open marriage emphasizes physical gratification by engaging in recreational sex with extramarital partners.

Psychological foundations[edit]

The preference for a polyamorous over a swinging style of open marriage can depend on many psychological factors. One factor may be sociosexuality,[33] a person’s willingness to engage in sexual behavior without having emotional attachments to the sexual partner. Individuals who are very willing to engage in sexual behavior without emotional attachments are said to have unrestricted sociosexuality. Individuals who are very unwilling to engage in sexual behavior without emotional attachments are said to have restricted sociosexuality. Individuals can vary along a continuum from unrestricted to restricted sociosexuality.

Community impact[edit]

Couples with different styles of open marriage tend to separate themselves to find others who share similar philosophies and interests, which likely contributed to the development of separate polyamory and swinging communities. These provide informational resources and support even when a particular couple in an open marriage may not consider joining either communion. Some couples may not have a strong preference for either style of open marriage and feel equally at home in either community.

The partners within a couple can differ in their respective preferences. One partner may prefer a polyamorous style of open marriage and participate in the polyamory community, while the other partner may prefer a swinging style of open marriage and participate in the swinging community. Variations in couple preferences and individual preferences can therefore lead to overlap between polyamory and swinger communities.

Lack of acceptance[ edit ]

Christianity and other religions[edit]

Some critics oppose open marriages on the grounds that open marriages violate religious principles. For example, open marriages are contrary to traditional Christian teaching. Open marriages also violate the prohibition of adultery in the Ten Commandments. The definition of sexual immorality in Christianity includes the practices of open marriage and is therefore considered an invariable ground for dissolution of marriage. The Jewish religion has similar values to Christianity in these matters. However, Muslim or Islamic teachings allow polygynous marriages, if only for the male partner. Islam forbids this practice for the partner. The perceived validity of these objections depends entirely on individual belief. Arguments about belief and rationality are beyond the scope of this article. In general, non-monogamous people tend not to be very religious. A 1998 review found that across the various studies, most swingers (approximately two-thirds) claimed no religious affiliation.[34]

Evidence of disapproval[ edit ]

Polls show a consistently high rejection of sex outside of marriage. Hunt mentions three general population polls conducted in the 1960s in which large majorities opposed extramarital sex at all costs.[7] Recent polls show that 75-85 percent of adults in the United States disapprove of extramarital sex.[35][36][37][38][39] Similar levels of disapproval are observed in other Western societies. Widmer, Treas, and Newcomb surveyed over 33,500 people in 24 nations and found that 85 percent of people believed that extramarital sex was “always” or “almost always” wrong.[40] Much of the rejection is attributed to “religious and moral reasons.”[41]

Some studies have shown a more direct rejection of open marriage. Hunt (1974), in a nationwide study of several hundred men and women, reported that about 75 percent of women and over 60 percent of men agreed that “swapping is wrong.”[7] A 1975 study of several hundred men and Women living in the Midwestern United States found that 93 percent would not consider participating in swinging.[6] A 2005 study surveyed 111 college women about various forms of marriage and family.[42] These young women viewed open marriage as one of the least desirable forms of marriage, with 94 percent saying they would never participate in a marriage in which the man has a right to sex outside of marriage and 91 percent saying that They would never participate in a marriage where the woman has a right to sex outside of marriage.

Health concerns[edit]

Having sex with a larger number of partners increases the risk of contracting sexually transmitted diseases. These concerns do not apply to open marriage alone, which would affect only 1 to 6 percent of the married population.[7][6][34][43] A 1985 study found that 33 percent of male swingers and 10 percent of female swingers reported actively fearing this risk.[44] In another study, STDs topped the list of disadvantages of swinging, and 58 percent of swingers reported some fear of HIV/AIDS.[34][45] Some couples have chosen to move away from the open marriage lifestyle and become sexually monogamous in response to HIV/AIDS.[45][46]

The risk of STDs can be greatly reduced by practicing safe sex. However, the percentage of people in open marriages who practice safer sex remains controversial. Anecdotal observations range from claims that no one practiced safe sex at a swing event to claims that everyone at an event practiced safe sex. A survey of swingers found, “Over 62% said they changed their behavior because of the fear of AIDS. The two most commonly cited changes were being more selective about who they rocked with and practicing safe sex (e.g., using condoms). Nearly 7% said they stopped rocking because of the AIDS epidemic, finally, a third said they had not changed any of their habits, and of those respondents, more than a third said nothing, not even AIDS, made them do it would bring to change. “[34]

Although the majority of swingers reported changing their behavior in response to HIV/AIDS, some chose to become more selective in their mate choice rather than adopt safer sex practices. Greater selectivity in mate choice is not a reliable means of stemming the spread of HIV/AIDS. Many people are unaware that they are infected and there may be no visible signs of infection. A psychological study suggests that people may not be particularly good at detecting lies about HIV status.[47] Remarkably, a third of swingers flatly rejected the idea of changing their behavior in response to HIV/AIDS. These results suggest that people living in open marriages are actually at slightly higher risk of sexually transmitted diseases, including HIV/AIDS.

Mental factors[ edit ]

Several authors consider open marriages to be psychologically harmful. They claim that sexual non-monogamy is too difficult for most couples to handle and that their relationships suffer as a result.[7][48][49][50][51] These authors claim that sexual non-monogamy provokes jealousy in couples. This disrupts couples’ sense of security in their relationships and disrupts their sense of intimacy. Consequently, these authors view open marriage as a “failed” lifestyle.

Other studies have found that couples report high levels of happiness and enjoy long open marriages.[13][14][15] Other couples are abandoning the open marriage lifestyle and returning to sexual monogamy. These couples can continue to see open marriage as a valid lifestyle for others, but not for themselves.[46] Still other couples are struggling and report that open marriage has contributed to their divorces.[52]

Loss of social support[edit]

Strong societal rejection of open marriage can result in a loss of psychological and health benefits. People in open marriages can hide their lifestyle from family, friends, and co-workers.[34][5][53] Note from Blumstein and Schwartz:

Apparently non-monogamous married cohabiting couples often feel they are viewed as bizarre or immoral by the rest of the world. They have to work out their sex lives against the rest of society. They may have an understanding with each other, but they usually keep it a secret from family, friends, and people at work. (Blumstein & Schwartz, 1983, pp. 294-295)[5]

The secrecy of their lifestyle reduces the amount of social support available to people in open marriages.

incident [ edit ]

In 1983, Blumstein and Schwartz[5] found that out of 3,498 married men, 903 had an agreement with their spouses that permitted sex outside of marriage; of these, 24 percent (217 men) actually had sex outside of marriage in the previous year, and a total of 6 percent were actively involved in open marriages in the previous year. The figure is only slightly lower for women, where out of 3,520 married women, 801 had an agreement with their spouse allowing extramarital sex, and 22 percent (or 176 women) actually had extramarital sex in the previous year. This means that about 5 percent of married women were actively involved in open marriages in the past year.

These estimates are slightly higher than those of other researchers. Hunt, based on interviews from a 1974 national study of sexual behavior, estimated that 2% to 4% of the married population were involved in open marriages.[7] Bartell (1971) estimated that two percent of the married population were involved in open marriages.[43] The lowest estimate comes from a study of several hundred people living in the Midwestern United States by Spanier and Cole (1975) who found that 1.7 percent of married people were involved in open marriages.[6]

After the publication of Open Marriage in 1972, popular media expressed a belief that open marriages were on the rise. However, Hunt concluded that the incidence of extramarital sex had remained about the same for many years:

For wives under 25, however, there is a very large increase, but even that has brought the incidence of extramarital behavior in these young women only close to the incidence of extramarital behavior in husbands under 25—but not to the same level. (Hunt, 1974, p. 254)[7]

Hunt attributed the misperception that open marriages were becoming more common to a spate of books, articles, and television shows devoted to the subject. He also notes that speculative comments about the rise of open marriages have sometimes been repeated enough times for people to cite them as evidence.

Almost twenty years later (1993), in a nationwide study of sexual behavior, Janus and Janus also denied that open marriages were on the rise and suggested that open marriages may have been declining:

Despite being popularized in a book by that title in the early 1970s, open marriage has never been as widespread as non-consensual extramarital activity, and its popularity seems to be waning even further today.” (Janus & Janus, 1993, pp. 197– 198) [54]

A lot of media interest can lead people to believe that the incidence of open marriages is increasing. Conversely, the media attention given to the marriage movement may lead people to believe that the frequency of open marriages is decreasing. Weiss (1997) states that “there is no scientific basis for concluding that these patterns gained popularity earlier or that they became less common in the 1980s and 1990s.”[55]

When sex is out of the picture, your relationship with your partner may change as well, as a sexless marriage affects the man. Maybe he treats you like a roommate and not like your wife.

He can go out alone, spend most of his time with his friends or alone. You may be living under the same roof, but your marriage could be falling apart.

Poor physical health

Sex, its frequency and quality are directly related to physical health. Heart, prostate, and bladder health are significantly affected by sex. A man may experience a deterioration in his physical health due to the lack of sex in marriage.

thoughts of divorce

When sex is absent from the marriage and the husband is taking its toll, he can consider separation and divorce. Thoughts of divorce can cloud his mind, and if it continues, he can act on it.

Reduces trust

If you and your husband are stuck in a sexless marriage, chances are your entire relationship will suffer as a result. He may doubt you if you’re the one who doesn’t want to have sex with him.

He may think your sexual needs are being met by someone else outside of marriage.

Since sex is lacking in marriage, you may often think that he is getting his sexual needs met from someone outside of marriage. A lack of trust can really ruin a relationship.

Bad communication

If your partner doesn’t feel close to you, they may slowly reduce communication with you. This may not be done consciously, but they may start withholding information because they don’t feel comfortable or think you don’t care.

Atrophied emotional connection

A lack of intimacy can drastically affect your emotional connection with your partner. If you find that your partner is distant, cold, or just plain disinterested, it’s because they feel a lack of emotion for you due to a marriage without intimacy.

What can a man do to save his sexless marriage?

What should a husband do in a sexless marriage? Should you just give up and ask for a divorce? This gives some men license to have an affair, but we all know that’s not the right approach. So how do we start to fix this problem?

Communicate

As they say, with open communication – you could fix almost anything, and the same goes for your sexless marriage. The number one piece of advice for a sexless marriage for men would be open communication with their partner.

Compromise

Once you started talking to each other, you would see where each of you are from. Because every situation is different, you should compromise based on what you can do to improve your marriage. You should both be willing to compromise for change.

Try again and again

If you’ve been in a sexless marriage for some time, jumping into the intense and passionate routine can be a challenge. Don’t get frustrated. This will take a while, and you might even be challenged to turn it on.

It’s okay – give it time and be creative. Try different techniques such as B. trying out sex toys, watching porn together and even role playing.

Remember your vows

Do you still remember your vows? Review them and think how much you value this marriage and your wife.

Don’t give up yet. Instead of focusing on the bad effects that a sexless marriage has had on you, try your best to work on the solution. As long as you both embrace change, it’s possible.

Why pray scriptures over your husband?

In many places in the Bible God tells us that we must ask to receive what He promises us. When we trust in him and love his ways, our desires are aligned with his desires.

Delight in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart. (Psalm 37:4)

Praying the scriptures over them is one way we can faithfully care for and bless our husbands.

However, sometimes we can become discouraged. We don’t see the things we hoped for.

So I found this passage in Mark amazing and encouraging to continue in faithful prayer.

Mark 9:14-29 says: “When they returned to the other disciples, they saw a large crowd around them and some teachers of the religious law arguing with them. When the crowd saw Jesus, they were overcome with awe and ran to greet him. “What’s all this arguing about?” Jesus asked. One of the men in the crowd spoke up and said, “Teacher, I brought my son here for you to heal. He is possessed by an evil spirit that will not let him speak. And whenever this spirit seizes him, it throws him violently to the ground. Then he foams at the mouth and grinds his teeth and goes rigid. So I asked your disciples to cast out the evil spirit, but they couldn’t.”

Jesus scolded the disciples and asked them why they couldn’t help this child. The boy’s father then asked Jesus if he thought he could save his son.

Continuing in verse 23, “What do you mean, ‘if I can’?” Jesus asked. “Anything is possible when a man believes.” The Father immediately exclaimed, “I believe, but help me to overcome my unbelief!” When Jesus saw the crowd of onlookers increase, He rebuked the evil spirit. “Listen, you ghost that is rendering this boy unable to hear and speak,” he said. “I command you to get out of this child and never enter him again!” and the spirit left the boy.

In verse 28 the disciples asked Jesus, “Why couldn’t we cast out this evil spirit?” and Jesus replied, “This kind can only be cast out by prayer.”

I don’t know about you, but for me this realization of the power of prayer is HUGE.

The fact that the disciples couldn’t do something because they didn’t pray AND that the prayer was as simple as “I believe, but help me to overcome my unbelief!”? Perplexed.

God designed prayer to enrich our spiritual life and have closer fellowship with Him. Prayer also unites husband and wife, because as we both draw closer to God, we will draw closer to each other.

How to pray for your husband

When you pray for your husband, pray from a position of victory. What the hell does that mean, Kenzie? Nice that you asked!

That’s the deal. God has already made promises to your husband, and he invites us to share in receiving his blessings.

God promised Abraham that he would give them a land flowing with milk and honey. Years later he commanded Joshua to go to the land he was giving them.

God promised to give them victory over their enemies. God had already given them all of the promised land.

God said that every place they entered would be their land – nothing more, nothing less. That means they can only enjoy as much as they put their feet up.

Sounds easy right? Unfortunately for her not so much.

The Israelites only lived in a small part of Canaan (rather than all of Canaan) because they were afraid to fight the enemies in front of them. The same enemies that God said he would defeat!

There are thousands of God’s promises throughout the Bible. Many of them are simply given to us, the daughters of the king.

God wants to give us these blessings because he is a good god who loves to give good gifts. But most of God’s promises are not placed directly in our hands: they are placed within reach.

God wants us to share in the experience of His blessings. (Priscilla Shirer, Begin the Battle on Your Knees Sermon)

The promises of the Bible are already yours, all you have to do is ask and receive (Matthew 7:7-8).

But you are not controlled by your sinful nature. You are controlled by the Spirit when the Spirit of God lives in you. (And remember that those who do not have the Spirit of Christ within them do not belong to Him at all.)

4 Colossians 3:2

Set your mind on things on high, not on earthly things.

5 Philippians 4:8-9

Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is beautiful, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or worthy of praise—consider such things. Whatever you learned or received from [Paul] or heard or saw in me – put it into practice. And the God of peace will be with you.

God I ask you to give my husband a calm and hopeful mind as he trusts in you. Thank you for promising to protect my husband’s heart and mind! Remind my husband to leave all anxious thoughts to you. Cover my man with your peace. Amen.

6 Philippians 4:5-7

Let your gentleness be visible to all. The Lord is near. Do not worry about anything, but bring your requests before God with thanksgiving in every situation through prayer and supplication. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.

7. Romans 15:13

May the God of Hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in Him to be full of hope through the power of the Holy Spirit.

Pray protection over him….

Lord, be a shield over my husband as he walks in integrity. Thank you for not having to be afraid because you tell us that you will never leave us or will leave us! Help my man to rest in the safety of your mighty shadow. Amen.

8. Proverbs 2:6-8

For the Lord gives wisdom; from his mouth come knowledge and understanding; he collects sound wisdom for the upright; He is a shield for those who walk in integrity, who guard the paths of righteousness, and watch over the path of his saints.

9. Hebrews 13:5-6

Keep your life free from greed and be content with what you have, for he has said, “I will never forsake or forsake you.” So we can confidently say, “The Lord is my helper; I will not fear; What can a human do to me?”

10. Psalms 91:1-2

Those who dwell under the protection of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of the Lord, “He is my refuge and my stronghold, my God in whom I trust.”

Pray for his role as husband and father…

God you are the perfect example for father and husband. Help my husband be the husband and father you want him to be. Guide my husband as he learns to be a better husband and father. Amen.

11. Ephesians 5:25-30

Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her to sanctify her, cleansing her through the washing of water through the word, and presenting her as a radiant church, without spot or wrinkle or every other flaw, but holy and blameless. In the same way, husbands should love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself. After all, no one has ever hated his own body, but they nurture and care for their bodies as Christ does the church—for we are members of His body.

12. Ephesians 6:4

Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger, but bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord.

God we believe you will give us the wisdom and guidance we need. Increase our faith and belief. I ask that my husband would seek wisdom from you and that he would gain understanding from you and be willing to seek advice when needed. Amen.

13. James 1:5-6

If any of you lack wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you. But if you ask, you must believe and not doubt, because he who doubts is like a wave of the sea driven and tossed by the wind.

14. Proverbs 13:10

Where there is strife there is pride, but wisdom is found in those who take counsel.

15. Psalm 119:104-105

I gain understanding from your commandments; that’s why I hate every wrong turn. Your word is a lamp to my feet, a light to my path.

Pray for strength…

Lord, strengthen my man. I ask you to give him perseverance, patience and a grateful heart. Help him walk as you please. We want to honor you with our lives, God, but without your strength we can do nothing. Amen.

16. Colossians 1:9b-11

…asking that you may be filled with the knowledge of his will in all spiritual wisdom and discernment to live in a way worthy of the Lord and perfectly pleasing to him: bearing fruit in every good work and growing in the knowledge of God ; be strengthened with all might, according to his glorious power, for all perseverance and patience with joy…

17. Colossians 2:6-7

Should I pray for my wife?

Your wife’s health and safety are precious, so guard them daily through prayer and vigilance. Pray that God will protect her and preserve her health, and ask that He will also work through you to watch out for her. Pray that she may be joyful.

10 Powerful Prayers for My Wife

Your wife is a gift. She will bless you with love, companionship, help and lots of fun. As your family’s spiritual leader, you have a responsibility to lead them (and any children you may have) onto God’s path. Proverbs 18:22 says: “Whoever finds a woman finds good and gains favor from the Lord.”

A big part of your role as husband and spiritual leader is to protect your wife in prayer. Through prayer you have a direct path to God; You can always turn to him for them. Here are 10 ways you can start praying for your wife starting today.

Pray for her self-care.

One of the hardest things for a woman to do is make time for herself, but her well-being is vital to your marriage and family. Take an active role in helping your wife make time for herself, but also pray that she can accept your gift of time without fear or guilt. She will have the opportunity to grow into the best version of herself and you will all be better off.

The Bible instructs husbands “to love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself” (Ephesians 5:28 ESV). Do you value your time to yourself – to exercise, relax or do things you enjoy? Help your wife create the same time for herself and watch her thrive.

Pray for balance in her life and work.

Wives – and mothers in particular – find it difficult to compartmentalize areas of their lives and as a result become very vulnerable to a lack of balance that will disrupt your relationship if left unaddressed. Pray that she will be able to prioritize her tasks as best she can and that she will be able to clearly see which tasks and activities are throwing her off balance. She may need a little encouragement to say “no” to the things that are throwing her off course. So pray that God will help her to confidently turn down these offers.

Pray for their relationship with God.

Your wife’s strong relationship with God will keep her centered and will benefit both of you (and your children, if you have them). At every opportunity, combine prayer with action and help your wife spend time with God each day. She has many responsibilities and this quiet prayer time will help alleviate her overwhelm.

Pray about your sexual relationship.

Ask God to bless this intimate and private part of your life together. Your union as husband and wife is a sacred place to slow down and enjoy one another while drawing closer to God. He gave you each other and created the gift of sex just for you. So if your sexual relationship isn’t where you want it to be, lift it up to Him. And if it’s already in an amazing place, pray for its continued blessings.

Pray for their ability to teach your children.

Your wife’s closeness to your children puts her in the perfect position to teach them about Jesus and help them grow in God’s Word. Like all duties, this one must be done intentionally, and the hustle and bustle of life can easily overwhelm their desire to focus on daily Bible study. Pray that she will find special ways to share the Word with your children daily, and also pray that your children will receive blessings and grow in the Lord.

Pray that she will not be overwhelmed.

It’s incredibly easy for work, marriage, children, and the daily responsibilities that come with running a household to overwhelm your wife. When overwhelm occurs, it is debilitating and can be devastating to relationships, health, and life in general if left unchecked. Pray that your wife will be able to take one moment at a time, one day at a time. Help in any way you can to shoulder some of her burden when she is overwhelmed, and pray that God will provide you both with the tools you need to live as stress-free as possible.

Pray about their friendships.

Healthy relationships with like-minded people such as friends, church family, and close relatives add richness and joy to your wife’s life. Pray that she will develop and nurture rich friendships that will benefit and enrich her. Support her desire to spend time with her friends because that is where she has a chance to nurture herself and grow spiritually.

Also pray that she will be vigilant and critical of the people she invites into your life. Ask God to help her take good stock of her character as she meets new people and also to give her wisdom in letting go of relationships that may have been harmful to her.

Pray for their health and protection.

Your wife’s health and safety are precious, so protect them daily with prayer and vigilance. Pray that God would protect them and keep them healthy and ask that He would also work through you to take care of them.

Pray that she will be happy.

Finding joy in the chaos of life can seem almost impossible, especially during times of high stress. We can quickly get bogged down in negativity. It is imperative that your wife (and you too!) be able to face life with the joy that comes from Christ. Pray that she will experience God’s joy fully each day and work with her to focus on life’s blessings and gifts.

Pray for the desires of their hearts to be fulfilled.

Your wife has dreams that are close to her heart and God-given gifts that she is eager to put to good use. Maybe she hid them for a season, or maybe she’s living them now. Pray that God will help her use her gifts and pave the way for her dreams to be fulfilled.

One last thought

The Bible says, “Husbands, walk understandingly with your wives, honoring the wife as the weaker vessel, since they are with you heirs of the grace of life, lest your prayers be hindered” (1 Peter 3:7). As you focus more on praying for your wife, take a careful inventory of your attitudes and actions. It is up to each of you as an individual to live your best life on God’s path.

Do couples who pray together stay together?

A new study from the University of Georgia is giving new meaning to the popular saying “couples that pray together stay together.” According to the research, attending religious services at churches, mosques, synagogues, or other places of worship helps to strengthen marriages, especially later in life.

10 Powerful Prayers for My Wife

A new study from the University of Georgia gives new meaning to the popular saying, “Couples who pray together stay together.” According to the study, attending services in churches, mosques, synagogues, or other places of worship helps strengthen marriages, especially later in life.

“Understanding ways to strengthen marriage in middle age and beyond becomes increasingly important as the population of older adults increases,” the study authors said.

The research focused on hundreds of couples, most of whom had been married for around 30 years. The experts found that partners who did not initially identify as religious but frequently engaged in joint activities with their significant other increased their involvement in worship and religion over the course of the study.

“I see that with a lot of retirees – they’re sitting in retirement and sometimes it seems like they’re stuck in a rut. Sometimes it seems like they don’t know what to do with all the time they have now. Not only can this harm her own well-being, but it can also affect her relationship with her spouse,” said lead author of the study, Victoria King.

“Devoting time to common hobbies and finding things to do together is important and can help strengthen their relationship. Maybe this hobby could get more involved in the church. I know my grandparents look forward to their church activities together.”

The study measures each partner’s level of piety by rating how important religion is to them and how often they attend religious services. The experts also weighed the activities each couple participated in, such as riding bikes, trying new hobbies, or solo weekend trips.

Participants reported on their happiness with their partners and their overall satisfaction in their marriages.

Previous studies have shown that as people get older, religion often becomes more of a priority in their lives. King explained that because most religions emphasize the sacredness of marriage and family unity, it makes sense that religious commitment should encourage couples to place an additional emphasis on doing things together and keeping their families strong.

“Families and couples today are always being pulled in so many different directions, with busy schedules, and family time is often pushed aside,” King said. “It’s important to find those little moments when families or couples can do activities together that they enjoy.”

The driving factor behind church involvement seemed to be wives, who often reported being more religious or spending more time with their husbands. This suggests that women spend most of their time nurturing relationships. As a result, wives may be more likely to suggest doing things as a couple or becoming more involved in church.

The study was published in the journal American Psychological Association.

The information provides you with a solid foundation for understanding the steps you need to take to restore your marriage and rebuild your relationship.

1. Admit your powerlessness over your partner and your marriage

Have you tried to change things about your spouse that annoy you or bother you? Or changing those things about your spouse…things you find undesirable? were you successful like dr Phil would say, “How did that work for you?”. I’m sure your answer is that nothing worked in terms of changing your spouse or things in your marriage that aren’t working. You are not making positive progress despite wanting to make the relationship healthier, happier, and better.

The first step to restoring your marriage is to admit that you cannot handle your spouse or marital problems on your own. That means you have to come to the point where you realize the ineffectiveness of your attempts to change your and your spouse’s flaws and character flaws. Embrace the reality that you are fundamentally powerless to control or change your spouse. You cannot control his or her character flaws and many of the things that happen in your life. You have to get to the point where you’re willing to admit that the strategies you’ve tried haven’t worked. And that any attempt you make to change or control your spouse will fail. It means you realize that you are not in control, but that GOD is.

You accept that He must be the center of your life. The focus is not on you, your spouse, your career, your money or your children. GOD is the focus. That means you must learn to place your spouse in God’s hands. You have to trust that he is working on your partner. Remember that no matter what state your marriage is in, God works miracles, changes lives, and heals broken hearts. In fact, God can help you restore your marriage. “We saw how powerless we were to help ourselves; but that was good because we put everything into the hands of God, who alone could save us… 2 Corinthians 1:9

Because we are powerless, we must call on the power of the Holy Ghost in our marriage. We need strength beyond ourselves to overcome our sinful tendencies and enable us to be the man and woman God expects of us. God provides this power through the person of the Holy Spirit. God and the Holy Ghost want to help you be successful in your marriage. Jesus Christ is available to any believer in Christ to help restore your marriage. The moment we receive Jesus Christ as our personal Savior, He enters our lives permanently. Jesus Christ is God with all the qualities that only God can have. Not only is He omnipotent, you and I have the opportunity to meet Him personally.

If our love and marriage is to be restored, how can you not afford to forego the power that Jesus is offering us to restore our marriages? When Jesus comes into our lives, He works in us to create a living communion between God and us. Of course, His work also affects the relationships we have with others around us, especially with our spouses and our children. Here are some of the ways Jesus can greatly influence our relationships. He

Empowers us to be like Christ (Ephesians 3:16)

Rules our daily life (Romans 8:14)

Convict us of sin (John 16:8)

Empowers us to fight sin in our lives (Galatians 5:15-16)

Make our marriages glorify Christ (John 16:14)

Brings forth the “fruit” of the Spirit in our lives; Love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control. (Galatians 5:22-23)

Consider these three steps that can lead your marriage to a new sense of intimacy:

Believe that God loves you and that He wants to walk in union with you through the power of the Holy Spirit. Confess to God your total dependence on the Holy Spirit for power. If there is any known sin in your life, confess it, agreeing with God that it is sin and displeasing to Him. Draw on God’s power through faith and obedience. Begin to walk by the Spirit in your daily life.

2. Pray for your partner, your marriage and yourself

Start praying for your spouse every day. Believe in God for a miracle in your marriage. Psalm 77:14 says, “You are the God of miracles.” The Bible makes it clear that God wants people to stay married. We must expect God to intervene in our circumstances in supernatural ways. Unbelief and fear paralyze us and make us believe that our problems are too big for God. We must believe that God can still move mountains.

Jesus said, “It will happen to you according to your faith” (Matthew 9:29).

Stormie Omartian suggests praying this prayer for your marriage in her book The Power of a Praying Wife:

“Lord, I am praying for an end to this conflict and a breaking of the power that strife has over us. Take away the pain and the armor we put on to protect ourselves. Lift us from the abyss of unforgiveness. Speak through us so that our words reflect your love, peace and reconciliation. Tear down this wall between us and teach us how to go through. Allow us to rise out of this paralysis and move into the healing and wholeness you have for us.”

The Bible makes it clear that God wants people to stay married. When our vows are tested by sickness, poverty, or hard times, and we cry out to God, He hears us. In our darkest moments, the Psalms remind us that God understands our situation and will help. In my marriage, the most difficult times were also the times when I experienced God’s rewards in the most amazing ways. Isaiah 64:4-5 says: “No eye has seen a god but you, acting for those who wait for him. You help those who like to do what is right.”

My marriage is undeniably better when I pray for my spouse. This encouragement makes me realize the importance of praying for everything. Prayers for simple blessings, for God’s mercy and peace in our homes. Prayers for complicated requests like how to communicate in a way that Sue understands. And prayers that I don’t really want to pray, for me to recognize my sin and for God to turn me into the husband that Sue needs. Prayer is your greatest and most powerful weapon in the fight to save your marriage. Prayer is a powerful tool that can help you restore your marriage.

James 5:16 teaches us that “the earnest prayer of a righteous man has great power and wonderful results.” Do you want to put great power in your partner’s heart and mind? If yes, then pray for your partner. Keep asking God to work in your partner and touch your partner’s heart, softening the harshness and breaking Satan’s blinding power in his or her life.

Do you want to see wonderful results in your marriage? As you do this, pray for your marriage. When Jesus healed a demon-possessed man, he explained his method of freeing people from the power of Satan: “How can anyone enter the house of a strong man and plunder his belongings unless he first binds the strong man? And then he will plunder his house” (Matthew 12:29).

If your mate or marriage is to be saved from the kingdom of darkness, you must constantly fight that battle in prayer. Jesus has given you authority over all supernatural powers of the enemy. “Behold, I give you authority to trample underfoot serpents and scorpions and all the power of the enemy, and nothing will harm you” (Luke 10:19). Your authority is not based on your power or ability, but on the mighty name of Jesus.

Hold your marriage before God in prayer and ask the Father to heal your marriage, bring reconciliation and restore your love. Pray and “pray without ceasing” (1 Thessalonians 5:17). Never give up! Don’t get discouraged if you don’t see results right away. Remember that God works on His schedule, not ours. You just have to do your part and let Him do the rest.

Also, remember to pray for yourself to find strength and courage for the path you are on today. David’s counsel is absolutely necessary to your endurance: “Wait on the Lord; be of good cheer and he will strengthen your heart; wait, I say, upon the LORD” (Palm 27:14).

3. Adjust your expectations

Most marriages sooner or later encounter problems and conflicts. Some marital problems and conflicts can be anticipated and avoided. Others cannot be foreseen and must be dealt with and resolved when they come. This requires the effort of both partners. Marital problems are complex, and for most there are no easy answers or quick fixes. If they have been occurring over a period of time, the relationship may be at a point of crisis. Marriage crisis is very painful, but that doesn’t mean the relationship should end.

When problems and conflicts are resolved, they can strengthen love in a relationship and offer a couple an opportunity to grow and learn and move to a higher level of mutual happiness in their marriage. Recognizing the need to deal with problems and conflict can help restore your marriage as you go through it together. Relationship struggles often show that we don’t understand some things about our partner and vice versa. These things often reflect a stockpile of unmet needs that have arisen. They can even point out areas of neglect, misunderstanding, and differences. We begin to see that there is work to be done in the relationship.

In unhappy relationships, the root cause of unhappiness is a lack of unconditional love and acceptance. Controlling, demanding, and unrealistic expectations are just symptoms of this cause. When we stop seeing marriage as an obligation on our partner to meet our expectations and instead see it as an opportunity to learn to truly accept our spouse for who he or she is, we take a giant step towards see our marriages become happy and fulfilled.

In his marriage research laboratory at the University of Washington, psychologist John Gottman has been studying married couples for more than twenty years. He has found that the most destructive qualities in a relationship are what he calls the four horsemen of the apocalypse, (1) criticism, (2) contempt, (3) defensiveness, and (4) walls. The first two traits indicate that one partner has great difficulty accepting the other; the second two are typical reactions of not feeling accepted. The importance of acceptance has also been documented by other researchers, who have found that the inability to accept difference is a major indicator of marriage failure. In short, these factors can be detrimental to your attempt to restore your marriage.

Does acceptance mean you think the other person is perfect? Of course not. That doesn’t mean you think their personality is flawless or that everything they do is perfectly fine with you. That doesn’t mean you don’t want them to get better. Nobody is perfect, and people will always have traits we dislike, traits we find disturbing, and behaviors we wish would stop. Approval is not the same as approval. Acceptance means that you recognize their essential worth and see them as worthy of your appreciation and love despite their imperfections.

Needless to say, certain things are unacceptable. There are non-negotiable standards. Physical abuse is one of them. Repeated infidelity, alcoholism and drug addiction are also unacceptable. Accepting behavior that crosses boundaries does not promote a healthy relationship, nor is it a sign of wisdom. You will not restore your marriage by burying your head in the sand. But aside from enduring what is truly unbearable, the ability to accept, elusive as it can be at times, is an essential part of true love and a lasting marriage.

4. Resist the enemy

The source of all marriage troubles can be traced back to the Garden of Eden with the first married couple of creation. Genesis 1 and 2 tell us that Adam and Eve lived in perfect union with God and with each other. Without fear or shame, they instinctively rejoiced in creation, in each other, and in God. It was essentially a taste of heaven on earth. God instructed them not to eat of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil (Genesis 2:17). They were told they would die if they did. Then one day something tragic happened. Suddenly, without warning, her world…her life…her marriage changed, and with it, ours forever. Genesis 3 shows exactly what happened and how it affected their relationship.

Now the serpent was more cunning than any wild beast that the LORD God had made. He said to the woman, “Did God really say, ‘You shall not eat from any tree in the garden’?”

The woman said to the snake, “We may eat fruit from the trees in the garden, 3 but God said: ‘You shall not eat fruit from the tree that is in the middle of the garden, and you must not touch it, or you will die.'”

“You certainly won’t die,” the snake said to the woman. 5 “For God knows that if you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and bad.”

When the woman saw that the fruit of the tree was good for eating and pleasing to the eye, and also desirable for gaining wisdom, she took of it and ate it. She also gave some to her husband who was with her and he ate it. Then the eyes of both were opened and they realized that they were naked; so they sewed together fig leaves and made themselves coverings (Gen. 3:1-7)

Into the silent beauty of this innocent garden crept the enemy. To Adam and Eve – and by extension to all of us – the serpent whispered, “You cannot trust God… you must take matters into your own hands… then you will be like God.” Adam watched in silence while his wife’s doubts led to disobedience. Passive but willing, her husband joined her in a final act of disobedience to their Maker.

Satan is not an impotent, imaginary figure, but a present and real enemy who seeks the destruction of God’s people, including their marriages and families. He attacked the first marriage and he still attacks marriages today. The problem is that couples are often tricked into fighting each other in their marriages instead of fighting the real enemy. Your partner is not your enemy. Your real enemy is Satan and his evil forces. I once read a magazine article about marital conflict that said, “Marriage is the only war in which you sleep with the enemy.” But that’s not true, your partner is not your enemy. It is important that you know this.

Your enemy is Satan, and he is the one who will do everything in his power to destroy your marriage. Describing him as a thief, Jesus said, “The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy” (John 10:10). The apostle Paul tells us in Ephesians 6:12, “For our warfare is not against flesh and blood, but against the princes, against the authorities, against the world powers of this darkness, against the spiritual powers of wickedness in the heavenly places.” Unfortunately, many believers do not take seriously his existence or biblical warnings and instructions about him. We can be absolutely certain that the enemy will do everything in his power to “kill, steal, and destroy,” first the joy and intimacy of your marriage, and then the marriage and family unit itself.

2 Corinthians 2:11 says that we should not let Satan take advantage of us by ignoring his plans.

According to 2 Corinthians 11:3 we know that Satan has the ability to attack us, similar to how he attacked Adam and Eve:

“But I fear by no means, just as the serpent deceived Eve by her cunning, so also shall your minds be corrupted by the simplicity that is in Christ” (2 Corinthians 11:3).

Satan corrupted Eve’s thinking with deceitful insinuations. He tricked them into thinking that God was holding them, that God couldn’t be trusted. Through suggestion he made them doubt and think irrationally. He led her to think and believe that instead of following God and His will for her life, she should not rely on God and take matters into her own hands. Today Satan is using the same tactics and trying to do the same to us. One of His main tactics in your current situation will probably be to try to convince you that this situation is too big for God. That’s a lie. Jesus said: “It is impossible for man, but not for God; with God all things are possible” (Mark 10:27). Nothing is too difficult for God. Surely God can help you restore your marriage.

Satan tries to confuse our minds, make us doubt God’s power, and distract us from following Christ. This is Satan’s cover. He tries to commit selfish and independent attitudes in man. He tries to corrupt us through our thinking, to make us rise up through selfish and independent actions and attitudes.

The undisciplined mind is susceptible to satanic attacks aimed at defeating us by causing wrong thinking. To have the life and marriage that God wants for us, we must be alert, confront our enemy, disprove his lies, and think clearly. James exhorts us, “Submit yourselves, therefore, to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you” (James 4:7). The apostle Paul exhorts us to direct every thought to obedience to Christ:

“Although we live in the world, we do not make war like the world. The weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world. On the contrary, they have divine power to destroy strongholds. We destroy argument and every claim that rebels against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ” (2 Corinthians 10:3-5, NIV).

Our mind is the battlefield. Through deception and lies, the enemy tries to keep every believer from trusting and walking with God. His typical method of attacking thought life generally consists of nothing more than well-timed suggestions. He knows our weaknesses and vulnerabilities, and his carefully timed suggestions can bring dangerous results. When left unopposed by the enemy and their demonic allies, a believer’s mind will be like a city without walls, easily attacked by anything that happens to be nearby. Solomon describes this in Proverbs: “He who does not control his spirit is like a ruined city without walls” (Proverbs 25:28).

The spiritual war over our marriages is won or lost on the battlefield of the mind. Until a person realizes this and begins taking steps to resist the enemy, all other efforts to win the battle are futile. The apostle John tells us, “Greater is he that is in you than he that is in the world” (1 John 4:4).

5. Focus on changing yourself, not your partner

“But if only he would change…I would feel so much more loved,” wives often tell me. Similarly, husbands say, “If she would change…I would be happy.” I believe there are few things more detrimental to a relationship than pressuring your spouse to change. That mindset just doesn’t work, for two reasons: First, because you can’t change others. You can only change yourself. Second, trying to change your spouse will create tension in your relationship and actually discourage him or her from changing. And besides, even if your spouse has changed, he or she wouldn’t feel very comfortable in the relationship until you make some changes yourself.

Think about it. They also dislike being pressured, fixed, demanded, controlled, or manipulated to change. This is probably how your spouse feels when you pressure him or her to make the marriage better for you. Trying to change your spouse will likely make him or her feel anxious, angry, and discouraged, and make him or her withdraw and resist you.

Developing a better marriage begins with a willingness to examine your own part in your marital problems and become a better spouse yourself. If you want to restore your marriage, it is absolutely critical that you take responsibility for your own mistakes in the relationship, rather than blaming your spouse and demanding that your spouse change. Know that only God has the power to change your spouse. Learn to focus on what God wants from you. Believe that with God’s help you can improve.

It’s always easy to look at the other person and see how they let us down to see what they did wrong in the marriage. Jesus said, “Why do you look at the speck in your brother’s eye, but do not see the log in your own eye? Or how can you say to your brother, ‘Let me take the speck out of your own eye,’ and behold, the log is in your own eye” (Matthew 7:3-4)?

Be willing to look at yourself in the mirror instead of reaching for the microscope to look at your partner. Consider what habits, actions, or words of yours have harmed your spouse and your marriage. Take responsibility for the mistakes you made. Try to discover the bad patterns and habits you may have slipped into.

Most of us tend to deal with the pain and difficulties in our lives by coping, not by changing. We change what we do, but somehow, deep down, we’ve only partially addressed it. Change, as Jesus describes it, involves more than just cleaning up our visible action. He wants us to do more than whitewash the outside of the house; He wants us to go in and clean the house and do something about the dirt under the carpet.

What have you done or not done in this relationship that contributed to the problems? How do you react to your buddy? What are your weaknesses that need to be addressed? Are you ready to look inside and find out? Are you ready to get real and be as honest as possible? Until you stand where you missed the target, you can’t get back to the center.

Decide what specific changes need to be made in your life so that you can become a better spouse. Identify unhealthy behavior patterns and decide what you can do to change those patterns. The Bible makes it clear that while God loves us just the way we are, He loves us too much to leave us that way. One of His greatest desires for us is our growth and maturity; to conform ourselves to the image of his Son (Romans 8:29).

This growth process involves change, and sometimes change comes through crises, troubles, setbacks, sin, mistakes, and failures. The process of choosing to change involves taking God’s hand and following him and trusting him to mold and shape us. He will never give us more than we can handle (1 Corinthians 10:13). He can make all things work together for good (Romans 8:28).

As a person who has studied human behavior and as a marriage and family minister who has studied relationships, I have discovered one thing about people that most want to grow, but few want to change. Why? Because growth requires change, and change rarely comes without difficulty or pain. Change takes time and energy. It takes a willingness to take an honest look at ourselves, with God’s help, and the courage to face our shortcomings, weaknesses, fears, and failures. It requires trusting God and believing that God is faithful in the midst of uncertainty to do a work in us. Alone we do not have the strength for long-term changes. Sure, we can change for a time, but we lack the strength to consistently seek unity as God intended.

If there is a major hurt, and significant anger, this should be done with a Christian counselor.

Ben was a 39-year-old computer technician whose wife, Janet, confronted him about an affair he had three years ago. While counseling with them about the affair, Ben told me that when he listened to Janet cry or express her hurt feelings, that he would tell her he had confessed his wrong, and that now she just needed to get over it! He said,

“I knew she was in pain, but the fact that I was the source of the pain was gut-wrenching. So, sometimes I tried justifying the affair. I blamed her – which stopped the tears and turned on the yelling – and when that didn’t work, I fell back on convenient excuses like, ‘It’s natural for men who are not getting enough sex at home.” “Well, none of this was true, and defending myself only made things worse. When I forced myself to listen to her; empathize with her and acknowledge her hurt feelings, as hard as it was, it helped her to heal. And going through that pain with her convinced me that I would never, ever in my life, no matter how great the temptation, cheat on Janet again.” “At one point, Janet told me that my affair caused her more pain than a miscarriage she’d had early in our marriage. I wanted to believe she was exaggerating – because that experience almost devastated her – but when I realized she was being honest, I broke down and wept myself. How could I have inflicted such incredible pain on someone I loved so much?”

It was difficult for Ben to listen empathically. But when he quit defending himself and was able to really listen to Janet, he was able to feel her pain. When he felt the magnitude of her pain, he repented of his wrong and asked for her forgiveness. As a result, their marriage was healed. You can restore your marriage too when you take the path of reconciliation with your spouse. Once you have been forgiven, demonstrate your newfound integrity to your spouse in tangible ways (such as by keeping your promises). Embrace God’s forgiveness and grace to do better.

In turn, choose to give the gift of forgiveness to your spouse. Remember how much God has forgiven you. Let your gratitude for that motivate you to forgive your spouse for all the ways he or she has hurt you. Rely on God’s help to move through the process of forgiveness, trusting that He will make it possible for you to forgive, and possible for you to restore your marriage.

Honestly, and objectively recall what happened to you. Explore the hurtful events from the wrongdoer’s perspective. Consider your spouse’s weaknesses that might have led to the wrongdoing. Someone has aptly said, “God takes great pleasure in meeting us more than halfway.” For example, He tells us in Luke 17:5-6 that if we have faith even as small as a mustard seed, that tiny seed of faith will be rewarded by miracles in our lives. In the same way, as we become willing by faith, to forgive and make amends with our mates, and release them and ourselves from the bitterness we have carried, God is there, eager to encourage us and reward even our feeble attempts.

When we ask the Lord to help us let go of bitterness, judgement and condemnation, and began to release it to Him, we will soon be aware of remarkable changes taking place within us. The Holy Spirit will begin a wonderful work of healing in our lives, and we will be set free from the tyranny of our bitterness and resentment. Whenever you remember the offense, remind yourself that you have chosen to forgive. Symbolize your act of forgiving with your partner in some way, such as by taking communion together or renewing your wedding vows.

8. Meet Your Spouse’s Most Important Emotional Needs

As human beings, we are incredibly intricate with a complexity of emotional needs that must be satisfied. These needs include our needs for attention, respect, appreciation, approval, sexual fulfillment, support, comfort, security, etc., and determine our sense of emotional well-being. In marriage, our emotional needs were meant to be met both by our relationship with God and through our relationship with our spouse. That’s precisely what God intended marriage to be; a committed, intimate, relationship that provides a supply of love to meet one another’s most important emotional needs. To build a satisfying and lasting marriage, you and your mate must commit to meeting each other’s physical and emotional needs.

What’s important to your spouse is probably different than what’s important to you. People feel loved in different ways. Sharing feelings, showing appreciation, spending special time together, affection, sex, thoughtful gifts, and sharing activities are a few examples. Know your spouse’s love language and be sure to use it often.

This is what love is; the constant choice to give to another. When we give of ourselves to meet our mate’s most important needs, we create love. What often happens is we evaluate our relationship based on how it benefits us, the expectation being that our partner is here to give to us. This is not love. Love is about taking a quantum leap from being self-centered to other-centered. This means becoming a student of your spouse and learning what pleases him or her, and remembering what pleases him or her. It means sacrificing your own needs to meet those of your spouse.

Selfishness and love do not mix. Philippians 2:3-4 says, “Do nothing from selfishness or empty conceit, but with humility of mind let each of you regard one another as more important than himself; do not merely look out for your own personal interests, but also for the interests of others.”

Success in love is not about waiting to act until you feel like loving your spouse. Instead, even when you may not feel like it, when you reach out to your spouse with caring actions that meet his or her most important emotional needs, it will trigger the feeling of love in your spouse, and hence a cycle of love.

In order for a marriage to survive a crisis, it has to improve and become better than ever. Your efforts in this regard are to strive to meet all of your spouse’s emotional needs. Ben says it took a long time to rebuild his marriage, but the results have amazed him.

“I have the world’s greatest marriage. And I talk, laugh, and love more now then at the most passionate period of our dating.” “For months after the affair, I think the only two questions I asked Janet were, ‘What can I do to make this up to you,’ and, ‘What do you need from me to know I love you more than anyone in the world?” “It took a long time for her to answer me with anything other than, “YOU CAN’T,” but eventually she gave me some ideas, and I ran with them. When she knew that I really meant it – that I would do anything and everything to make her happy – she started working with me on our marriage.”

9. Rebuild Friendship and Trust

Trust is perhaps the most foundational ingredient in building an intimate relationship between husband and wife. It takes a very short time to destroy trust and a much longer time to rebuild it. Trust must be cultivated and nurtured. Rebuilding it requires that you consistently monitor your behavior, being very careful how you treat each other. This is the key to building a strong relationship, and trust. If you want to restore your marriage you need the key!

One of the most common reactions to a marital crisis is the loss of hope. One or both spouses have typically been disappointed and become discouraged. He or she believes that there is no possible way to repair the relationship, and that even if they tried to stay together, that it would be impossible to ever trust again. In fact, this inability to even imagine trusting again can be one of the greatest threats to reconciliation and healing. What seems impossible is often never even sought. The good news is that we have a God who loves us, and who is deeply committed to restoring us and our relationships.

But, just how does one restore trust in a severely fractured marriage? First, you must understand that a multitude of hurts and disappointments occurred that eventually led to a crisis in the relationship. Most people focus on just one particular major climactical event that occurred. Yet, there were likely a number of problems occurring personally (and in the relationship) that contributed to it. This is not to excuse or justify any behavior, but to emphasize that healing the pain in the relationship will not simply ensure that the behavior doesn’t happen again. True healing must focus on restoring the relationship and changing behaviors. Just as a marriage’s downfall was a process, many steps are necessary to rebuild the marital relationship. Take the steps today to restore your marriage by reversing the process that has been destroying it.

An individual’s trust in God is the single most important factor in how he or she recovers. When trust is damaged, or destroyed, a person needs to be dependent and trusting on our Heavenly Father. Just as a small child would depend and trust on a loving earthly parent. In addition, anything blocking an open relationship with God must be dealt with. This includes: (1) facing and turning from one’s own sins and personal shortcomings, (2) confessing these sins to God, and (3) asking forgiveness. Jesus reminds us to remove the log from our own eye before noticing the speck in another’s (Matthew 7:3-5) .

Trust in God will be the foundation upon which you begin to develop trust in your spouse. Before trust can be restored in the relationship, there must be sense of confidence that you are secure. Your sense of confidence, and security is ultimately tied to your confidence in God.

Psalm 112:7-8 says, He will have no fear of bad news;

his heart is steadfast, trusting in the LORD. His heart is secure, he will have no fear;

in the end he will look in triumph on his foes. (New International Version)

Forgiveness cannot be disregarded if true recovery is desired. Restoring trust requires reconciliation. Taking adequate time, paying attention to detail, and receiving the objective help of a Christian counselor may be essential for the future of your relationship. Sin gains its strength from secrecy. Reconciliation gains strength by bringing the secret sin to light. While rebuilding trust, a truly repentant spouse will show evidence by taking the initiative to restore trust in the marriage. The following is strong advice to a spouse who is sincere about repairing a damaged marriage:

Prayerfully commit or recommit to the lordship of Christ in your life.

If an affair was involved, break all ties with the affair partner. In the case of pornography or other addiction, put all necessary boundaries in place.

Agree to the assistance of spiritual mentors and accountability partners.

Commit to Christian counseling including sorting through the issues leading up to the crisis and making necessary changes.

Take personal responsibility for the damage done to the spouse and family, without shifting blame.

Allow your spouse the time necessary to heal without applying guilt or added stress.

Disclose secrets that are blocking intimacy with your spouse in the presence of a pastor or counselor.

Create a covenant of trustworthiness with your partner that lists important ways you each will be faithful to one another.

Set aside time each week to be with your spouse. Go out for coffee or a meal in order to build communication skills.

Make a list of your values and plan for how you will hold onto them during stressful times in the future. Hold up your end of the bargain even if your spouse slips.

These steps are necessary to prepare the ground for trust to grow again. A spouse’s dedication, transparency, and honesty will serve as vital nutrients to enrich this soil. Constant prayer will water the soil, and in time, trust will grow again. As you go forward in the healing process, know that you’ll have good days and bad days. You’ll experience progress as well as setbacks. This process is never easy for either partner. But it will be the most worthwhile process you have ever undertaken. You will learn and you will grow.

Remember, God is for you and He can see beyond the present, when you cannot. He is good all the time, even when your marriage and life seem to be falling apart. Trust in Him to make a way for you.

Pray daily, and ask Him to help you see your spouse and your relationship through His eyes. Ask Him for spiritual discernment and wisdom and it will be provided. Trust in God’s promise in James 1:5: “If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives to all men generously and without reproaching, and it will be given him” (RSV).

10. Seek Immediate Help

The complexity, stress and pain of a marriage crisis often handicaps a couple’s ability to resourcefully resolve problems on their own. For several reasons, it is important to get help as soon as possible after you realize that your marriage is in crisis. First of all, so that further damage can be controlled. A marriage crisis can have a negative domino effect and intervention is common requirement in order to alter the negative course. Secondly, because a marriage crisis puts your relationship in a very vulnerable position.

Right now, what the two of you probably need most is a sense of hope, empowerment and forward progress that can come from outside help and guidance. Thirdly, you need to seek immediate help because the longer you wait, the more difficult it will likely be to save your marriage. A marriage crisis needs to be treated as an emergency, marriage 911 situation because the very life of the relationship is at risk. As in any emergency, it is important to act right away to get the professional help you need. It amazes me that most people decide to end their marriages without seeking professional help. A small percentage of people on the brink of divorce consult marriage counselors or marriage ministers. That’s why I want to offer some guidelines for you to consider in seeking professional help to improve your marriage.

(1) Make sure your counselor is a Christian marriage counselor and has received specific training (Biblical, Pastoral, and or Marital training). Make sure your counselor has experience in marital counseling. Marriage counselors should possess the skill to help people overcome the differences that naturally occur when two people live under the same roof. They need to know Biblical truth and have a thorough understanding of God’s design for marriage in order to help you restore your marriage. For this reason, don’t be shy. Ask your counselor about his or her training and experience.

(2) Make sure that your counselor is a Christian, and a Biblical counselor. Make sure that he or she is biased in the direction of helping you find solutions to your marital problems rather than helping you leave your marriage when things get rocky. Feel free to ask him or her to give you a ballpark figure about the percentage of couples he or she works with who leave with their marriages intact and are happier as a result of counseling. Although your counselor may not have a specific answer, his or her reaction to your question will speak volumes. The reaction will give you insights as to whether or not he can help you restore your marriage.

(3) The counselor’s own values about relationships definitely plays a part in what he or she does and is interested in when working with you. Although some people want their counselors to tell when a person should stop trying to work on their marriage, counselors really don’t have this right. If they say things like, “It seems that you are incompatible,” or “Why are you willing to put up with this?” or “It is time to move on with your life,” they are simply imposing their non-biblical values on you. This is an unethical act, in my opinion.

(4) Make sure you (and your partner) and your marriage counselor set concrete goals early on. If you don’t, you will probably meet each week with no clear direction. Once you set goals, you should never lose sight of them. If you don’t begin to see some progress within two or three sessions, address your concern with your counselor.

(5) Know that most marital problems are solvable. Don’t let any marriage counselor tell you that change is impossible. Human beings are amazing. They are capable (especially with God’s help) of making significant and lasting changes, especially for people they love. Most of all, trust your instincts. If your counselor is helping, you’ll know it. If he or she isn’t, you’ll know that too. Don’t stay with a counselor who is just helping you tread water. Find one who will help you swim.

(6) Finally, the best way to find a good Christian marriage counselor is word-of-mouth. Satisfied customers say a lot about the kind of marriage counseling you will receive. Although you might feel embarrassed to ask a minister, friends or family for a referral, you should consider doing it anyway. It increases the odds you’ll find a counselor who will really help you. and your spouse. There’s a lot to be gained from seeking the advice of a third party who can help you find simple solutions to life’s problems. May God be with you as you seek that higher route.

10 Powerful Prayers for My Wife

You were there, dear moms. You’ve had a tough day at work or at home (or both), you feel overwhelmed by everything you have to do in a day just to keep things running smoothly.

You are stressed and worried, and so is your heart. It feels hurt, broken.

You hold everything together gracefully until after the dishes are cleaned up the kitchen and the last few good nights, kisses and hugs. Until the kids fell asleep.

And then you let it all out, in tears, in big, heartbreaking sobs. Your husband holds you helplessly and doesn’t know how to help you other than with his hugs.

But you know what he needs to do (besides hugging you) — it’s just that you’re not really able to tell him when that emotional breakdown happens.

So…

Dear husbands, this is especially for you when you feel helpless in the face of your beloved wife’s emotions and tears and you don’t know how to help her.

1. Don’t deny her feelings

Different women express their feelings of sadness in unique ways. It is wrong to lump all women into the “women are from Venus” category and expect a common bandage to ease their pain.

Yes, women are complex beings, but let me tell you a secret. Over time, by observing subtle cues, you will learn exactly how to read your woman’s emotions and decode what she wants during times of emotional breakdown.

Feel your wife’s emotions. When she sobs and you hug her, do you feel her body relax? Or is she withdrawing from you? If you know what works, either give her the space she needs or hold onto her.

2. Expand your support

Sometimes it takes more than 24 hours to solve a problem. Helping your wife heal could be like that too. Show her that you haven’t forgotten how much you love her by leaving her sweet messages on post-its or by sending caring text messages throughout the day.

3. It’s not always about hugs

Women love hugs. But we also love shoulder massages, back and foot massages, a kiss on the forehead or just a long cuddle in bed.

The right type of physical touch that works for your woman (or a combination) can work wonders when it comes to healing your woman’s feelings.

4. Complete one of their tasks

There are certain things your wife may never ask you to do and you may never do them for her unless asked. It could be anything from putting baby’s washed clothes away to making cereal.

Complete one of these tasks for her without asking her.

5. Be her safe place

Yes, she is the strongest woman you know, but she also has her flaws like everyone else. Let her know that you are always there for her in times of need. That you will never judge them and will always be there and support them. It gives her the strength to get through those vulnerable moments, knowing that you will always have her back no matter what.

We hope these tips will help make your relationship even stronger and more beautiful.

Help me, Lord, not to speak out of the rawness of my feelings, but only to say things that will honor You and bring the restoration I desire. Amen.

Prayer for God’s intervention and will

Faithful Father, from the beginning you held the union between a man and a woman sacred. I come confessing my absolute dependence on Your sacred passion for marriage pouring out on mine. I humble myself before You and surrender my life to Your will for the restoration of my marriage. Amen.

Prayer for breaking barriers and obstacles

Precious Lord and Savior, your holy word is a prophecy of how you prepared the way for my salvation through the sacrifice of Jesus on the cross. I ask you to prepare a straight way to restore my marriage. Please remove all our obstacles; Hurt, guilt, shame, pride, and whatever else impedes our recovery. Please unite us once more so that we can live together as husband and wife. Amen.

prayer for favor

Sovereign lord, Esther won grace and favor in the eyes of the king. Lord, this was Your work and served Your purpose. I’m asking you now, would you please do the same for me. Would you please grant me mercy and favor in my husband’s eyes? Bind our hearts together as one and unite us again. Please give my husband eyes only for me so the restoration of my marriage can begin. Amen.

Prayer for acceptance of the Lord’s timing

Merciful and loving Father, your timing is perfect. I have sincerely prayed for my marriage to be restored. I am separated from my spouse and I confess, Lord, my heart anxiously awaits Your answer. You tell me not to worry but to entrust my path to you and trust you. Lord I need your peace now. I trust you, but my flesh is weak. Strengthen me to stay the course you set me. Amen.

prayer for faith

My lord, I feel like my faith is like the faith of the father who prayed for his son in the Bible. I gave you my marital problems as the father gave his son’s illness. His lack of faith is evident from the little word “if” in his request, and I can see my wavering faith in my own prayers to you. I know You can heal and restore my marriage, but my faith is weak. Please increase my faith Lord and reunite me with my spouse soon. Amen.

Pray for Divine Wisdom…

Just as you have accepted Christ Jesus as Lord, continue to live your life in Him, rooted and built up in Him, strengthened in faith as you were taught, and overflowing with gratitude.

Help me to not point fingers or respond defensively. Teach me how to listen to ______________ and to really hear.

10 Powerful Prayers for My Wife

“The persistent prayer of a righteous man is very effective.” (James 5:16)

Dear friend in Christ,

Thank you for visiting us today. We pray this prayer every day for everyone who comes here. We believe and we see it daily; that God is doing a mighty work in marriage and that your heart and your spouse’s heart and marriage should be restored completely.

Marriage restoration is possible when a husband and wife are willing to engage in conversation and when one or both are willing to engage in dialogue about their relationship. Whether you’re dealing with communication problems, unresolved conflicts, emotional pain from past hurts, an affair, anger, unforgiveness, selfishness, or unresolved differences, here are three hopeful prayers that can help you restore your marriage.

Prayers to save a marriage

Lord Jesus, our marriage is crumbling. I come to you; “before Your throne of grace”, desperately seeking You, asking for Your help and guidance and wisdom on what to do. We stumble and find the hurdles just too big. We keep hearing the word “divorce”, we hear other “voices” telling us to just give up – that there was too much water under the bridge… that our marriage has gone too far to go on. But Lord, none of us want to ruin our marriage. We don’t want to break up our family or hurt our children. They said marriage is a covenant “till death do us part.” You said that “nothing is too difficult for you”. I believe that it is also your will that our marriage be healed.

But Lord, we’ve tried and done what we could, and now we’ve come to a point where we don’t know what to do. Lord I ask you if there is a way please show us the way and what to do. I ask you to show us the next steps we need to take to restore our marriage. I ask you to deal with my heart, selfishness, apathy or pride or anything _______ (the) heart of my spouse. I ask you to reveal to us all that we do not see for ourselves. I believe, Lord, that You are “…the way, the truth, and the life.” We got lost. We need your way, your truth and your life. We lost our “first love” for each other. We need them. We need you to restore us; I ask You, O Lord, to restore us and to help us find one another and You again.

I ask You to renew in me and in all of us a willing spirit. Help me not to point fingers or be defensive. Teach me to ______________ listen and really hear. Lord, I realize that my actions, attitudes and feelings and the things that happened between us that got us to this place didn’t happen overnight. I realize that undoing things I did that brought us to this point in our marriage will take time. I’m asking you to show me what I need to do to fix these things between us. Help me see what I need to see to change. I ask you to work in the heart of ______________ (my spouse) and help him/her to do what you want him/her to do.

Lord, You promised to lead us in the path we should walk. You are a wise advisor and you know exactly what we need. All our hopes and expectations are in You. If outside Christian advice is needed to lead us back and “start over,” please refer us to who can truly help. I trust You are the answer, Lord. I believe and declare that divorce is not what we want. I ask that Your will be done in our lives and in our marriage. In the name of Jesus, amen.

May the Lord bless you. Please fill out our information form with your first names and we pray for you, your spouse, and that your marriage will be healed and restored.

sincere in Christ,

Bible verses about marriage

There are many messages in the Bible about marriage, partnership, faith, love and God that can be part of your wedding, vow renewal, anniversary or everyday life. The Bible tells us how to love ourselves first, what to do for others, and how to be loving, devoted, and faithful partners to one another. It celebrates romantic love and holds the love of God above all.

Genesis 1:27-28: So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them. And God blessed her. And God said to them: “Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth and subdue it and rule over the fish in the sea and over the birds of the sky and over every living thing that moves on the earth.”

Genesis 2:18-22: Then said the Lord God: “It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him a fit helper.” …Then the Lord God caused a deep sleep to fall upon the man, and while he slept he took one of his ribs and closed its place with flesh; and the rib which the Lord God took from the man, he made into a woman and brought her to the man.

Genesis 2:24: Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and cling to his wife, and they shall be one flesh.

Ephesians 5:25-29 Husbands, love your wives, as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her to sanctify her, after cleansing her through the bath of water with the Word, to present the church to him in glory , without spot or wrinkle or anything of the sort, so that it may be holy and without blemish. Likewise, husbands should love their wives as they love their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself. For no man ever hated his own flesh, but nurtured it and cherished it as Christ did the church…

Ephesians 5:33 But each of you should also love his wife as he loves himself, and the wife must respect her husband.

Matthew 19:4-6: “Have you not read,” he replied, “that in the beginning the Creator ‘made them male and female’ and said, ‘Therefore a man will leave his father and his mother and be united to his wife, and the two shall be one flesh? So they are no longer two, but one flesh. What God has joined together, let no one separate.”

Bible verses about faith

Malachi 2:14-15: But you say: “Why does he not?” For the Lord was a witness between you and the woman of your youth, whom you were unfaithful to, although she is your mate and your wife by covenant.

Proverbs 3:3-4: Never let love and faithfulness desert you; Tie them around your neck, write them on the tablet of your heart. Then you will win favor and a good name with God and men.

Romans 12:10 Be devoted to one another in love. Honor one another over yourselves.

Romans 13:8 Owe nothing to anyone but to love one another, for he who loves one another has fulfilled the law.

Isaiah 54:5: For your Maker is your husband, LORD of hosts is his name; and the Holy One of Israel is thy Redeemer, who is called the God of all the earth.

1 Peter 3:7 In the same way you husbands should show honor to your wives. Treat your wife with understanding while you live together. She may be weaker than you, but she is your equal partner in God’s gift of new life. Treat them as you should so that your prayers are not hindered.

Ecclesiastes 4:12: Though one may be overpowered, two can defend themselves. A cord made of three strands does not break easily.

Praying for Your Wife from Head to Toe

As I mentioned in 25 Ways to Show Love to Your Wife, praying with and for your wife is a critical part of a healthy marriage.

Here is an accompanying graphic to match my wife’s Praying For Your Husband From Head to Toe. She made them both, but posting this one on my blog made more sense than hers.

Whether or not you refer to this prayer guide, I hope you make a habit of praying for your wife daily. If you would like to download a free printable version of our head to toe reminder plan just click on the image to the right. Enjoy.

Praying for Wife Head to Toe

It’s so important to pray for our wives every day. One of the most common types of biblical prayer is praying the armor of God over her (Ephesians 6). This is one way to protect them from the onslaughts of the enemy of our faith who wants to destroy our marriages. And I agree that this is an important prayer.

Below are some prayer points (with scripture references) that will take our prayers for our wives to the next level. I suggest you take a picture of your wife (standing). Then lay it in front of you as you go through these prayer points. We men are “visual” beings. That’s why I have a picture of Cindy in my mind when I pray for her. I also have the prayer sheet below in front of me. This makes it easier to visualize each area mentioned in these prayer points and pray with the belief that God is pouring out His Spirit on them.

Husbands, you don’t even have to tell your wife you’re doing this, but I can tell you, if you do this consistently, you will see things change – first in your heart and attitude, and then in your wife.

[NOTE: It is not essential that you cover every area of her body at the same time. It IS important to pray for at least one of these areas each day.]

YOUR HEART:

Lord, help ______ to love you with all your heart, soul, and strength today. (Deuteronomy 6:5)

Protect ______ heart today from anything that might pull her away from you or us. (Proverbs 4:23)

Give ______ a new heart and renew your spirit within her so that she will follow you faithfully today and always. (Ezekiel 36:26-27)

Create in ______ a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit in her. (Psalm 51:10)

Help ______ to trust you (and you alone) with all of your heart. Help her seek YOUR understanding when she needs it. (Proverbs 3:5)

Let the peace of Christ reign in _______. And may she know your peace and be thankful. (Colossians 3:15)

YOUR MEMORY:

May _______ be encouraged in heart and united in love to understand and know the mysteries of God. (Colossians 2:2-3)

It is easy for _______ spirit to get distracted from you, God, and your knowledge. So I blame and destroy every argument that comes her way. And I pray that it will capture every thought to make it obedient to Christ. (2 Corinthians 10:5)

With all the distractions that _______ might encounter today, may their minds be on things heavenly and not earthly. (Colossians 3:2)

I pray the following for both of us, Lord, that neither of us will be distracted by things that don’t really matter. May we focus on: whatever is true, noble, right, pure, whatever is lovely and admirable. If anything is excellent or commendable – may we reflect on those things. (Philippians 4:8)

When it comes to “patterns to follow,” _______ cannot validate their thinking with the pattern of this world; rather, help their spirit to transform and be renewed by you. (Romans 12:2)

YOUR EYES:

God, you know what causes each of us to be pulled away from your truth. So today _______ take your eyes off the things you see as worthless. (Psalm 119:37)

Open _______ eyes too so she can see all the wonderful things You have in Your Word for her. (Psalms 119:18)

Jesus, wherever and with whomever _______ needs to be reconciled, please show her how to do it. (2 Corinthians 4:18)

It is easy for all of us to succumb to the temptations of the devil. This is especially true when we let go of our vigilance. Lead _______ today so that she becomes self-controlled and alert. (1 Peter 5:8)

YOUR EARS:

Open _______ ears (both physically and mentally). Help her not to miss anything you are talking about in her life. (Romans 10:17)

There are times when we all get “hard of hearing” when it comes to Your voice, God. So when you knock on the ________ door to her heart today, I pray that she will “hear you.” Prompt her to respond to your call to her life. (Revelation 3:20)

Thank you for giving me ______ to be my wife. I’m thankful she has ears to listen to you and a heart that doesn’t rebel when you speak to her. (Isaiah 50:5)

It’s not enough that we just “listen” to your word, so I pray that _______ and I will be active “doers” of what the Bible says. (James 1:22 and James 1:25)

YOUR MOUTH:

This is difficult for all of us! Please put out _______ a face mask so the words she speaks today will be an encouragement to all who hear. (Psalm 141:3)

When ________ is challenged in her faith today, empower her to speak of your love with great boldness. Help her, even if she feels threatened. (Acts 4:29)

As _______ speaks and communicates with others today, “may the words of their mouths and the meditation of their hearts be pleasing in your eyes.” (Psalm 19:14)

We can all get caught up in crude jokes or silly gossip. I know you can help _______ not fall for it; but rather be one who points out thanksgiving to others. (Ephesians 5:4)

When it comes to her speech today, may she be full of grace and may _______ know how to answer each as you would have for her. (Colossians 4:6)

And when someone asks _______ why she is a follower of Christ, give her the words to speak boldly and unashamedly about all that you have done in her life. (1 Peter 3:15)

YOUR ARMS:

Give _______ the physical and mental strength she needs for any daunting task she faces. Strengthen her, especially if she’s feeling weak today. (2 Corinthians 12:9)

YOUR HANDS:

Your word says you want us all to raise holy hands in prayer. So I’m doing this now so that _______ and I can live together without sinning in anger. (1 Timothy 2:8)

Since you promised to always be with her, please hold _______ right hand. Lead her in everything today. (Psalm 73:23)

It is _______ desire to do well whatever she puts her mind to and does with all her might (as wife, mother, etc.); please encourage her today and use me to be an encouragement to her and help her take some of the burden off. (Ecclesiastes 9:10)

HER LEGS:

If _______ is feeling insecure about her faith today, give her strong legs to stand her ground. (Ephesians 6:13)

You also marked the race that _______ is to “run for their lives.” So please help her shake off anything trying to hold her down or stop her from completing her life and being victorious. (Hebrews 12:1)

HER FEET:

If _______ feels stuck in her faith like she can’t move a foot, lift her out of the swamp. Hold her tight and put her feet on the Solid Rock – Jesus Christ. (Psalm 40:2)

It’s easy to “slip” on our walk with you. I am very grateful that I can trust you will lead _______ spiritual path. Lord, I trust you will help keep her from slipping. (Psalm 66:9)

I pray that _______ will be equipped and ready today, equipped with her own readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. May their feet be firmly planted and rooted in Your Word (the Bible) today and every day. (Ephesians 6:15)

Romantic prayer

Good God, help me keep the romance between my wife and I alive. It’s so easy to get stuck in a routine and forget to keep track of yourself. Help me follow her like it’s our first date. I pray that I can make her feel truly loved for the rest of her life and that the butterflies will never go away. But I can’t do this alone, God. Be with me and be my endurance. Be with my wife too. And help her feel loved even if I fall short. Amen.
