The way you see your life shapes your life.
How you define life determines your destiny. Your perspective will affect how you invest your time, spend your money, use your talents, and value your relationships.
One of the best ways to understand other people is to ask them, “How do you see your life?” You will find that there are as many different answers to this question as there are people.
I’ve been told life is a circus, a minefield, a roller coaster, a puzzle, a symphony, a journey and a dance. People have said, “Life is a merry-go-round: sometimes you’re up, sometimes you’re down, and sometimes you just go round and round” or “Life is a bicycle with ten gears and gears we never use” or “Life is a deck of cards: you must play the hand that is dealt to you.”
If I were to ask you how you imagine life, what image would come to mind? This image is your life metaphor. It is the view of life that you consciously or unconsciously hold in your head. It is your description of how life works and what you expect from it. People often express their life metaphors through clothing, jewelry, cars, hairstyles, bumper stickers, and even tattoos.
Your unspoken life metaphor affects your life more than you realize. It determines your expectations, your values, your relationships, your goals, and your priorities. For example, if you think life is a party, your main value in life will be having fun. If you see life as a race, you will appreciate speed and will probably be in a hurry most of the time. If you look at life as a marathon, you will appreciate perseverance. If you see life as a struggle or a game, winning is very important to you.
What is your perspective on life? Perhaps you are basing your life on a flawed life metaphor. To fulfill the purposes for which God created you, you must challenge conventional wisdom and replace it with the biblical metaphors of life. The Bible says: “Do not conform yourselves to the standards of this world, but let God transform you inwardly through a complete change of heart. Then you will be able to discern the will of God.”
The Bible offers three metaphors that teach us God’s view of life: life is a test, life is a trust, and life is a temporary task. These ideas are the foundation for purposeful living. We’ll look at the first two in this chapter and the third in the next.
Life on earth is a test. This life metaphor is found in stories throughout the Bible. God is constantly testing people’s character, faith, obedience, love, integrity and loyalty. Words like trials, temptations, refinements, and trials occur more than 200 times in the Bible. God tested Abraham by asking him to sacrifice his son Isaac. God tested Jacob when he had to work extra years to earn Rachel as his wife.
Adam and Eve failed their test in the Garden of Eden, and David failed his tests from God on several occasions. But the Bible also gives us many examples of people who have passed a great test, such as Joseph, Ruth, Esther, and Daniel.
Character is both developed and revealed through trials, and all of life is a trial. You will always be tested. God is constantly watching your reactions to people, problems, successes, conflicts, illnesses, disappointments and even the weather! He observes even the simplest actions, like opening a door for others, picking up a piece of trash, or being polite to a clerk or waitress.
We don’t know all the tests God will give you, but we can predict some of them based on the Bible.
They are tested by big changes, belated promises, impossible problems, unanswered prayers, undeserved criticism, and even senseless tragedy. In my own life I have found that God tests my faith through problems, tests my hope through the handling of possessions, and tests my love through people.
A very important test is how you behave when you cannot feel God’s presence in your life. Sometimes God withdraws on purpose and we don’t feel his nearness. A king named Hezekiah experienced this test. The Bible says, “God withdrew from Hezekiah to try him and see what was really in his heart.” Hezekiah had enjoyed close fellowship with God, but at a crucial point in his life God left him alone, to test his character, uncover a weakness and prepare him for greater responsibility.
When you understand that life is a test, you realize that nothing in your life is insignificant. Even the smallest event has significance for your character development. Every day is an important day, and every second is an opportunity to grow, to deepen your character, to demonstrate love, or to rely on God. Some tests seem overwhelming while others don’t even notice you. But all of them have eternal implications.

The good news is that God wants you to pass life’s trials, so He never allows the trials you face to be greater than the grace He gives you to handle them. The Bible says: “God keeps his promise, and he will not allow you to be tested beyond your strength to stand firm; if you are tried, he will give you the strength to endure it, and so provide you with a way out.”
Every time you pass a test, God takes notice and plans to reward you in eternity. James says, “Blessed are those who pass when tested. If they pass the test, they will receive the crown of life that God has promised to those who love him.”
Life on earth is a trust. This is the second biblical metaphor of life. Our time on earth and our energy, intelligence, opportunities, relationships and resources are all gifts of God entrusted to our care and stewardship. We are stewards of what God gives us. This concept of stewardship begins with the realization that God is the owner of everything and everyone on earth. The Bible says: “The world and everything in it belongs to the LORD; the earth and all who dwell on it are his.”
During our short stay on earth, we never really own anything. God just lends us the earth while we’re here. It was God’s property before you arrived and God will lend it to someone else after you die. You can just enjoy it for a while.
When God created Adam and Eve, he entrusted them with the care of his creation and appointed them stewards of his property. The Bible says: “[God] blessed them and said: ‘Have many children, that your descendants may dwell on all the earth and bring them under their control.
The first task God gave to man was to administer and care for God’s “stuff” on earth. This role was never rescinded. It’s part of our purpose today. Everything we enjoy is to be treated as a trust that God has placed in our hands. The Bible says, “What do you have that God has not given you?
Years ago, a couple let my wife and I use their beautiful beachfront home in Hawaii for a vacation. It was an experience we could never have afforded and we thoroughly enjoyed it. We were told “Use it as if it were yours” so we did! We swam in the pool, ate the food in the fridge, used the pool towels and dishes and even jumped on the beds for fun! But we knew all along that it wasn’t really ours, so we took special care of everything. We enjoyed the benefits of using the home without owning it.
Our culture says, “If you don’t own it, you won’t care.” But Christians live by a higher standard: “Because it belongs to God, I must take care of it as best I can.” The Bible says, “Those who are trusted with anything of value must show themselves worthy of that trust.” 8 Jesus often referred to life as a trust and told many stories to illustrate this responsibility to God: In the story of the Talents 9 A businessman entrusts his wealth to his servants while he is away, and when he returns he evaluates each of the servant’s responsibilities and rewards them accordingly. The owner says: “Well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful in some things; I will put you in charge of many things. Come and share your Master’s happiness.”
At the end of your mortal life, you will be evaluated and rewarded for how well you have handled what God has entrusted to you. That means everything you do, even simple daily tasks, has an eternal impact. If you treat everything as trust, God promises three rewards in eternity. First you get God’s confirmation: He will say, “Good work! Well done!” Next you will be promoted and given greater responsibility in eternity: “I will put you in charge of many things.” Then you will be honored with a celebration: “Come and share the happiness of your master.”
The more God gives you, the more responsibly He expects of you.
Most people don’t realize that money is both a test and a trust from God. God uses finance to teach us to trust him, and for many people, money is the greatest test of all. God watches how we use money to test our trustworthiness. The Bible says, “If you are untrustworthy about worldly riches, who will trust you with the true riches of heaven?”
This is a very important truth. God says there is a direct relationship between the use of my money and the quality of my spiritual life. How I manage my money (“worldly riches”) determines how much God can entrust me with spiritual blessings (“true riches”). Let me ask you, is the way you spend your money preventing God from doing more in your life? Can you be trusted with spiritual riches?
Jesus said, ‘Much will be required of everyone to whom much has been given, and much more will be required of him to whom much has been entrusted.’ Life is a test and a trust, and the more God gives you, the more responsibility He expects of you.

Therefore, it is extremely important to see “life” correctly. To avoid misconceptions about life, one must challenge conventional wisdom. To arrive at the correct (biblical) view of “life,” the Bible describes three aspects of “life,” two of which are outlined in this chapter and are as follows: 1. Life on earth is a trial. The Bible uses words like temptation that are refined and tested hundreds of times. There are countless real-life examples of people whom God has subjected to various tests just to reveal (to them – God always knows) and develop their character. Every human being is constantly being tested by God down to the smallest detail. Trials with “major changes,” “delayed promises,” “impossible problems,” “unanswered prayers,” “undeserved criticism,” and “pointless tragedies” are common in everyone’s life. A very important test is how one behaves when one cannot feel God’s presence. This is an important test of faith in God and His Word, which more than anything else reveals a person’s character and core beliefs. When one understands that “life” is a test, one can be assured that every moment, day, and situation is an opportunity for growth to deepen and mature one’s character – to demonstrate love and dedication to God. But no matter how difficult the test, God will not allow a person to be tested beyond their ability to pass the test as long as one submits to God—a manifestation of God’s grace to all. And for the Christian, every successful passing of a test brings eternal reward. 2. Life on earth is a trust. God, who is the owner of everything and everyone on earth, gives each human being different gifts of time, energy, intelligence, opportunity, relationships and resources. God expects everyone to recognize this and be a good steward of their gifts. Every human being should realize that his sojourn on earth is brief and that everything he is and has is borrowed from God. Even the earth itself is God’s property, on loan to man. Man’s God-given role of “mind his own business” has never been abolished. It is part of God’s complex purpose for every human being. This instills a higher standard of care than earthly wisdom teaches, usually resulting in only things that become “owned” being closely and personally cared for. The application of earthly standards of care will equal fewer eternal rewards, since how a person goes about the things God entrusts to them is very important. If a Christian is right in his trust, God will give him (1) confirmation in eternity—saying, “Good work! Well done!” (2) promotion – by giving him greater responsibility, “I will put you in charge of many things,” and (3) celebration – “Come and share your master’s happiness.” Money is both a test and also a trust from God. For many, it is the greatest test of all. The Bible indicates that there is a direct correlation between the use of money (another loan from God) and one’s spirituality. (2 Chronicles 32:31) No temptation has come upon you save that which is common to man; but God is faithful, who will not let you be tempted beyond your means, but will also provide a way out of temptation so that you can endure it. (1 Corinthians 10:13) Blessed is the man who endures temptation; for if he is tried, he shall receive the crown of life which the Lord has promised to those who love him. (James 1:12) The earth is the Lord’s and all its fullness, the world and those who dwell in it. (Psalm 24:1) Then God blessed them, and God said to them: “Be fruitful and multiply; fill the earth and subdue it; Rule over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the sky, and over every living thing that moves on the earth” (Genesis 1:28). . . And what do you have that you didn’t get? Now, if you have indeed received it, why are you boasting as if you had not received it? (1 Corinthians 4:7b) Also, stewards are required to be found faithful. (1 Corinthians 4:2) His master said to him: “Well done, good and faithful servant; You were faithful over a few things, I will put you over many things. Enter into the joy of your Lord.” (Matthew 25:21) So if you have not been faithful in regard to unrighteous mammon [worldly riches], who will entrust you with true [spiritual] riches? (Luke 16:11). . . To whom much is given, much is asked; and from whom much is entrusted they will ask even more. (Luke 12:48b) Conclusion/Comments Viewing one’s existence on this earth from a self-centered or “worldly” (wisdom) standpoint will lead one to emphasize all qualities of life that will lead to adverse consequences , both here on earth and in eternity. But when a person understands and accepts the biblical perspective for their earthly sojourn (understands that life on earth is quite short and that all that pertains to life on earth is a gift of and entrusted to God), then will he will (1) realize that all circumstances of life, no matter how insignificant, are trials to be laid bare to him and his character developed. He will then come to the truth that all things in his life and how he responds to them will have eternal implications. This (biblical) view will change his life on earth; but beyond that it will be of supreme importance in eternity.
