Life on earth is a temporary task.
The Bible is full of metaphors that teach about the brief, transitory, transitory nature of life on earth. Life is described as a mist, a swift runner, a puff and a puff of smoke. The Bible says, “For we were born only yesterday… Our days on earth are as fleeting as a shadow.”‘
To get the most out of your life, you must never forget two truths: First, life is extremely short compared to eternity. Second, the earth is only a temporary abode. You won’t be here long, so don’t be too clingy. Ask God to help you see life on earth the way He sees it. David prayed, “Lord, help me to see how short my time on earth will be. Help me to know that I’m only here for a moment.”
The Bible repeatedly compares life on earth to temporary life in a foreign land. This is not your permanent home or final destination. You only go through, only visit the earth. The Bible uses terms like extraterrestrial, pilgrim, alien, stranger, visitor, and traveler to describe our brief sojourn on earth. David said, “I’m just a stranger here on earth,” and Peter declared, “If you call God your Father, live out your time as a temporary dweller on earth.”
In California, where I live, many people have moved here from other parts of the world to work here, but they keep their citizenship with their home country. They must carry a visitor registration card (called a “green card”), which allows them to work here even though they are not citizens. Christians should carry spiritual green cards to remind us that our citizenship is in heaven. God says his children should think differently about life than unbelievers do. “All they think about is this life here on earth. But we are citizens of heaven, where the Lord Jesus Christ lives.” True believers understand that there is far more to life than just the few years we live on this planet.
Your identity is in eternity and your home is heaven. When you grasp this truth, you will stop worrying about “having it all” on earth. God is very blunt about the danger of living for the here and now and adopting the values, priorities, and lifestyles of the world around us. When we flirt with the temptations of this world, God calls it spiritual adultery. The Bible says, “You cheat God. If all you want is your own way and you flirt with the world at every opportunity, you end up becoming enemies of God and his way.”
Imagine being asked by your country to be an ambassador to an enemy nation. You would probably need to learn a new language and adapt to some customs and cultural differences in order to be polite and complete your mission. As an ambassador, you could not isolate yourself from the enemy. In order to complete your mission, you would need to be in contact with them and identify with them.
But suppose you feel so comfortable in this foreign land that you fall in love with it and prefer it to your homeland. Your loyalty and commitment would change. Your role as ambassador would be jeopardized. Instead of representing your home country, you would start acting like the enemy. you would be a traitor
The Bible says, “We are ambassadors of Christ.”
Unfortunately, many Christians have betrayed their king and kingdom. They have foolishly concluded that the earth is their home because they live on the earth. It is not. The Bible is clear: “Friends, this world is not your home, so do not make yourself comfortable. Don’t spoil your ego at the expense of your soul.”8 God warns us not to become too attached to what is around us because it is temporary. We are told: “These rare contacts with the things of the world they should make good use of without attachment to them, for this world and all that it contains will pass away.”
Compared to other centuries, life has never been easier for much of the western world. We are constantly entertained, amused and taken care of. With all of the fascinating attractions, fascinating media, and entertaining experiences available today, it’s easy to forget that the pursuit of happiness is not what life is about. Only when we remember that life is a test, a trust, and a temporary task will the pull of these things lose their hold on our lives. We’re preparing for something even better. “The things we see now are here today and gone tomorrow. But the things we cannot see now will remain forever.”
The fact that the earth is not our final home explains why, as followers of Jesus, we experience hardship, heartache, and rejection in this world. It also explains why some of God’s promises seem unfulfilled, some prayers seem unanswered, and some circumstances seem unjust. This isn’t the end of the story.
Your identity is in eternity and your home is heaven.
To keep us from becoming too attached to the earth, God allows us to feel significant levels of dissatisfaction and dissatisfaction in life longings that will never be fulfilled on this side of eternity. We’re not entirely happy here because we’re not meant to be! The earth is not our final home; We were created for something much better.
A fish would never be happy living on land because it was made for water. An eagle could never be satisfied if it were not allowed to fly. You will never feel completely satisfied on earth because you were created for more. You will have happy moments here, but nothing compared to what God has planned for you.
Realizing that life on earth is only a temporary task should radically change your values. Eternal values, not temporal ones, should become the determining factors in your decisions. As C. S. Lewis observed, “Anything that is not eternal is eternally useless.” The Bible says: “We fix our eyes not on the seen, but on the unseen. Because the visible is ephemeral, but the invisible
eternal.”
It is a fatal mistake to assume that God’s goal for your life is material prosperity or general success, as the world defines it. Abundant living has nothing to do with material abundance, and faithfulness to God does not guarantee success in a career or even in ministry. Never focus on temporary crowns.
Paul was faithful, but he ended up in prison. John the Baptist was faithful, but he was beheaded. Millions of faithful people have been martyred, have lost everything, or have come to the end of their lives with nothing to show. But the end of life is not the end!
In God’s eyes, the greatest heroes of faith are not those who achieve prosperity, success, and power in this life, but those who view this life as a passing task and serve faithfully in anticipation of their promised reward in eternity. The Bible says this about God’s Hall of Fame: “All these great men died in the faith. They did not get the things that God had promised His people, but they saw them coming far into the future and rejoiced. They said they were like visitors and strangers on earth… they were waiting for a better land, a heavenly land. So God is not ashamed to be called their God, because he has prepared a city for them.”14 Your time on earth is not the consummation story of your life. You’ll have to wait to heaven for the rest of the chapters. It takes faith to live as a stranger on earth.
An old story is often repeated of a retired missionary who returns to America on the same boat as the President of the United States. Cheering crowds, a military band, a red carpet, banners and the media welcomed the President home, but the missionary slipped aboard unnoticed. Feeling self-pity and resentment, he began to complain to God. Then God gently reminded him, “But my child, you are not home yet.”
You won’t be in heaven two seconds before you exclaim, “Why did I put so much emphasis on things that were so temporary? What was I thinking? will it last?”
When life gets difficult, when you are overcome by doubt, or when you are wondering if living for Christ is worth the effort, remember you are not home yet. At death you will not leave your home – you will go home.
Earth is not our final home; we were created for something much better.
