How are plastic fittings made?

Generally, fittings such as joints, elbows or T-pieces are produced by injection-moulding. Also production of storm water boxes uses the injection moulding process. In injection-moulding, the plastic material is fed from a hopper into the melting section of the injection-moulding machine.

PVC Pipe Fitting Injection Molding Machine

extrusion

Tubes are primarily manufactured by an extrusion process. The raw material is fed to the extruder via a hopper and a gravimetric or volumetric control system. Inside the extruder cylinder, the material is heated by electricity and the friction in the screw system to a melting point of around 200°C. The molten material is forced through a cavity called a die, thereby forming it into a tube. The tube is then calibrated to the correct size in a vacuum box and then cooled with water in spray boxes. Extrusion is a continuous process and tubes can in principle be made in infinite lengths. At the end of the production line, the pipes are cut to length and sleeved or wrapped, depending on their intended use.

The method described above is used to produce so-called solid-wall pipes, which consist of a layer of a homogeneous material.

In addition to the process for solid wall pipes, other variants of manufacturing processes are used, e.g. for structured wall pipes. Structured-wall tubing has an optimized design to meet physical, mechanical, and performance requirements while using fewer materials. Double wall is a typical structure for pipe wall construction. Another variant are the so-called coextruded tubes, in which the layers can consist of different materials. A typically three-layer co-extruded sewer pipe consists of an outer skin and an inner skin of virgin (virgin) material, with the middle layer of post-consumer recycled material. In this way, the discoloration of the recycled material can be hidden in the middle layer inside the pipe.

Multilayer pipes for sanitary installations are made of PE or PEX with an aluminum layer in the pipe wall. The aluminum has two jobs: to improve longitudinal stiffness and to act as an oxygen barrier. The barrier is important in cases where the tubes are used for heating applications. The barrier can also be made with a polymer called EVOH.

Pipes can be connected in a variety of ways to form reliable and leak-free pipe systems. They can be joined by either welding, a rubber grommet, or a solvent adhesive system.

How is CPVC fittings made?

CPVC hose is SDR11 (1/2″ to 2″) with standard hydrostatic pressure ratings of 400 psi at 73ºF (2750 kPa at 23ºC) and 100 psi at 180ºF (690 kPa at 82ºC). Consult individual CPVC pipe manufacturers literature and listings for appropriate pressure ratings. PVC hose and pipe are sold in straight lengths.

definition

PVC (polyvinyl chloride) that has been chlorinated by a free radical chlorination reaction. CPVC is made by adding chlorine to PVC in a water slurry or fluid bed chlorination process. The chlorination reaction is initiated by ultraviolet light. The chlorinated PVC is compounded with ingredients necessary for the desired properties for further processing. The chlorine added to PVC gives CPVC higher temperature performance and improved fire and corrosion resistance.

overview

CPVC is a high temperature plastic pressure pipe system introduced in 1959 for drinking water installations. It has also been used extensively in sprinkler systems since 1985. This material is also used for many industrial and process piping. CPVC tubing is available in nominal sizes from 1/2″ through 24″ and is approved in all plumbing and mechanical models in the United States and Canada. In addition, CPVC pipe and fittings from select manufacturers are listed for light hazard fire sprinkler systems as defined in NFPA standards 13, 13R, and 13D.

Is PVC pipe manufacturing a good business?

If it is making at least 10 rupees profit from one kilogram, it can be earn RS 20000 as profit in a day if it is producing 2 tone output per day. Usually most of the companies are making the profit of 10 to 25 rupees from one kilogram production.

PVC Pipe Fitting Injection Molding Machine

PVC, UPVC Pipe Manufacturing Business discusses the details of establishment in this post. The PVC (polyvinyl chloride)Upvc (plasticizer-free polyvinyl chloride) is manufactured using a machine. PVC and PVC pipes are mainly used for construction work, irrigation, electrical work and for agriculture.

It is very important to do a market study on this business before starting your entity. Because different types of PVC pipes are already available in the market, such as B. PVC wiring pipes, PVC plumbing pipes, UPVC and CPVC.

In the case of PVC, products of different qualities and sizes are available on the market. From your market study, you should therefore determine which is the most popular and best-selling PVC pipe on the market.

Also note which pipe quality and size is in high demand in the market. Obviously, according to your requirements, you must have a reasonable volume of investments, small or large, to start this entity.

You can start manufacturing PVC pipe as either a small industry or a medium sized industry. The amount of the investment can vary depending on the requirement.

In this article, we discuss the investment, marketing and expected profitability of both PVC and UPVC production unit. Because both products can be made in the same machine.

Investment for the production of PVC and PVC pipes

In this section, we have listed the major capital expenditures for building PVC and UPVC production business.

Investment in building and electrical wiring

Machine and equipment investments

Electrical connection and paper release investment

Construction and electrical investments

We need 4000-5000 square meter building to set up PVC and UPVC production unit. You can start it at your own location or at a rental location. If you erect 40000 sq ft buildings in GI pipes and sheets, the investment is 10 lakh INR.

Building land (select suitable land for PVC production)

If you source your own land for setting up the unit, you should ensure that the location is suitable for the purpose. The most suitable location for this type of industries is government or private industrial lots or zones.

We can take advantage of this type of land by taking it from the government on a lease for periods of 35 to 90 years. And we can also buy these plots from the hands of private individuals.

If we take it for rent, the expenses for the land do not need to be included in this calculation.

Investments in machinery and equipment for PVC and PVC pipes

Calculation of investments in machinery and equipment, PVC and PVC pipes. We must have a clear idea of all the machines and equipment that are essential for the production of PVC pipe. Below are the necessary machines for the production process of PVC or UPVC pipes.

Different brands of these machines from different companies are available in India. If you set up PVC & UPVC pipe production unit, it will need about 57 lakh rupees or more as machinery investment.

Electrical connection and paper release investment

Now we can roughly calculate the investment costs for paper clearance and electrical connection. For the electrical connection, you must install a separate transformer for your device.

Because these types of production units require a power connation with a capacity of over 100 hp. It is therefore mandatory to install a separate transformer.

For this purpose you need to deposit around Rs 260000 to Rs 4 lakh according to Electricity Board instructions.

As it is a manufacturing unit, it requires a pollution control certificate, Panchayath license, clearance pars from Fire and Safety and Health Administration. However, if it’s in an industrial area, you don’t have to invest a lot for paper clearance.

Anyway, you will have to spend about 1 lakh rupees for paper release. In this situation, the total capital expenditure to set up a PVC and UPVC production unit is 70 lakh and up in INR.

How about the working capital for PVC and PVC pipe production?

With one PVC & UPVC Pipe Making Machine, we can produce large quantity in one day. Depending on the capacity of the machine, you can produce around 2 to 4 audio outputs in a single day.

This type of machine usually has a capacity of 200 kilograms. Therefore, if you run it in one shift, you can produce about 52 Tone Output in a month.

Running the machine for 24 hours can produce about 104 sound output. You must raise the working capital to run your machines for at least three months. For a newly established business, it is necessary to have 72 lakh rupees in working capital to run it for a month if it is planned to run it in one shift.

Raw material for the production of PVC pipes

Various forms of PVC pipes are available on the market. Here we mainly explain the raw materials for PVC sanitary pipe and UPVC cold water pipe.

The main raw material for the production of PVC pipe is the virgin material of PVC resin. You need to add chemicals and fillers.

We can use calcium carbonate (CC) as a filler. If you prefer to make ISI quality pipes, you need to use 2kg of filler material. If you prefer to make non-ISI products, you can add about 8kg to 20kg of filler component.

At the prevailing market price, Resin is priced at RS 140 per kg. But the prevailing market price for calcium carbonate used as a filler is 15-20 RS/kg.

chemicals for PVC

After that you need to add the chemicals for PVC pipe like stabilizer, wax, stearic acid, titanium. Therefore, you also need to use chemicals to make different colors like ivory, red, green, and blue.

Raw materials are readily available at all times, although there may be shortages in very rare situations. The most common virgin resins are LG and Finolex. Some other imported brands are also available in different grades in the market.

Market study for PVC pipes

UPVC and PVC pipes have wide market opportunities, especially in the fields of irrigation, construction and government. PVC pipes are in high demand and are mainly sold for government projects and works. Such as irrigation activities, drainage systems and for construction works.

Various types of PVC pipes with different sizes and qualities are available on the market. The main types of PVC pipe are PVC wiring pipe, PVC pipe, UPVC and CPVC pipe.

Common sizes of PVC wiring ducts are 16, 20, 25 and 32. Within these sizes, many types of ducts are available with different grades, especially ISI marked ducts and non-ISI grade ducts.

In the case of plumbing pipe, many sizes of pipe are manufactured and the size varies from 0.5 inch to 8 inch. Many kinds of quality products are also available under these sizes.

PVC pipe demand from different areas

In a more populous country like India, PVC pipes will have a great demand in the market. You can market it through different forms. Many companies pursue direct marketing strategies.

Some companies only supply products for government projects and only accept bids from governments. Some of the companies are completely dependent on the sales side.

But some of the companies market their product using all three strategies. So, it is evident that the PVC and UPVC pipe manufacturing business has huge market potential and scope.

Benefit from PVC pipe production line

This section is concerned with calculating the profit margin of PVC and UPVC pipe production unit. It is possible to generate huge sales with this unit. Because the production capacity of his machine is between 2 and 4 tons per day.

If it makes at least 10 rupees profit from one kilogram, it can earn 20000 RS as profit in one day if it produces 2 tons per day. Typically, most companies make a profit of 10 to 25 rupees from a kilogram of production.

We get at least 26 working days in a month. Even if we take into account the 10 rupees basic profit margin of one kilogram, we can earn the whole gross profit of 520000 RS in one month.

monthly output from PVC pipe production line

Now we can calculate the total expenses in a month. The main expense item is the electricity bill. As it is a production unit, we should calculate about 60000 rupees as electricity bill in one month.

The minimum number of workers to operate a unit of any significant size is five. So we have to spend 75000 rupees to pay the salary for these five workers.

Other main expense items are maintenance costs and costs for marketing and transport. For these expenses we have to reckon with less than 50000 rupees.

Net profit from PVC pipe production line

Therefore, the total expenses for running this type of unit in a month is 180000 rupees. So if we subtract the total cost of Rs 180,000 from the gross profit of Rs 520,000 we get a net profit of Rs 340,000 in one month. Hence, this is the best business opportunity that secures tremendous expected profitability.

Conclusion

PVC & UPVC Wiring & Plumbing Pipe is the essential and unavoidable product anywhere in the world. By the term UPVC we mean that the product has the quality of the American standard.

The PVC pipe production unit is a good business opportunity with a large market and the highest expected profitability. In any case, it requires a significant amount of medium-level capital expenditure.

Which fitting is best for plumbing?

Brass Piping

Red brass pipe is considered the best option, since it contains a high amount of copper.

PVC Pipe Fitting Injection Molding Machine

The pipes for domestic and commercial plumbing can be made from many different materials. As with all engineering decisions, the best option depends on the application and project conditions. Also, each material has advantages and disadvantages.

The most common materials used for piping are copper, PVC, CPVC and PEX. This article provides an overview of these four materials and others found in the construction industry.

Get a professional plumbing design for your next construction project.

Regardless of the pipe material used, you can reduce project costs by optimizing the layout of the plumbing system. This reduces the total piping length required along with connection and labor costs. Building information modeling can help you optimize plumbing and other MEP systems.

copper pipes

Copper is very durable and has been the traditional material for plumbing since the 1960s. Since then, other materials have been introduced, but copper is still one of the best options. The main disadvantage of copper pipes is their high price and require soldering and additional fittings. Because of their value, copper pipes are tempting to thieves if exposed.

ADVANTAGES DISADVANTAGES Resistant to leaks

Proven reliability since the 1960s

Continuous

Doesn’t pollute the water

heat tolerant

Long lifespan

Old pipes can be recycled

Corrosion resistant. Expensive: About $300 for 100 feet

Old installations may contain lead solder

Old copper tubing can be recycled, but copper mining and manufacturing causes environmental damage. Because of this, copper is not considered a green material.

Some common uses of copper tubing include hot and cold potable water supply and refrigerant lines for HVAC systems. Type K copper tubing has the thickest walls and is commonly used in underground utilities. Type L has intermediate walls while Type M has the thinnest walls and is commonly used for wall service lines.

Polyvinyl Chloride Piping (PVC)

PVC is a plastic material commonly used in plumbing and comes in two sizes: Schedule 40 and Schedule 80.

Schedule 40 PVC is the most commonly used because it has thinner walls and lower price.

Schedule 80 PVC has thicker walls, making it more durable but also more expensive.

The American National Standards Institute (ANSI) provides tables that standardize the outside diameter of PVC piping. The table below summarizes the advantages and disadvantages of PVC as a pipe material.

ADVANTAGES DISADVANTAGES Resistant to rust and corrosion

Resistant to high water pressure

Inexpensive

Easy installation, no welding or metalwork

Versatile: several sizes and configurations

Strong and durable

Non-conductive. Cannot be used for hot water as heat will deform PVC.

PVC is degraded by UV light, which means it cannot be exposed to sunlight.

Not safe for drinking water.

Not recyclable.

PVC is commonly used for the drain lines of sinks, toilets and bathtubs. Other common uses include indoor plumbing, underground plumbing, ventilation shafts, water mains, high pressure lines, and stormwater systems.

Chlorinated Polyvinyl Chloride (CPVC) Piping

As the name suggests, CPVC is PVC pipe with a higher chlorine content. In contrast to normal PVC, CPVC is suitable for hot and drinking water. Compared to copper, CPVC pipe is smoother and produces less noise when water flows through it. CPVC pipe is also insulated to prevent energy loss, more flexible than metal pipe, and fireproof.

ADVANTAGES DISADVANTAGES Safe for drinking water

easy installation

Can carry hot water

More flexibility than PVC and metal pipes

All the advantages of PVC and more durable

fire resistant

Non-conductive CPVC pipes will burst when frozen

Not recyclable

More expensive than PVC

The manufacturing process is highly polluting

Some common uses of CPVC piping include hot and cold water supplies, hot water drains, and disposal (sewage and water) pipes.

Cross-linked polyethylene (PEX) pipes

PEX pipes are considered one of the greatest innovations in plumbing. PEX is an extremely flexible pipe similar to a hose that can bend around edges and obstacles. In addition, it uses compression fittings and requires no glue.

PEX can be easily used with existing plumbing, including copper, making it great for repairs and retrofits. While PEX is more expensive than PVC, installation costs are lower and maintenance is minimal. PEX pipes and fittings have been used for over 30 years but gained popularity after 2010.

ADVANTAGES DISADVANTAGES Flexible

Versatile

heat resistant

Frost resistant as the material can expand and contract.

Investigations into the contamination of non-conductive water are still ongoing. However, PEX has been approved in states with strict regulations.

The fittings require a special tool

Cannot be connected directly to a water heater

Cannot be used outdoors as the material will be damaged by UV rays.

Because of its versatility, PEX pipes are often used in retrofits and renovations. PEX is also used in areas with little ventilation where joining pipes with glue can be dangerous. The material is suitable for hot and cold water supplies.

Other piping materials

The four pipe materials described above are the most common in plumbing systems, but they are not the only options. Below are some examples of materials that are less popular or are no longer used.

Galvanized steel tubes

This material was popular in the past, but has fallen out of use due to its negative effects:

Internal rusting in small diameter pipes due to the zinc coating

Can clog over time

Lead can be released from corroded pipes

water discoloration

Galvanized steel is also a heavy material, which limits its applications in plumbing. These pipes were commonly used in gray water and service water drains.

Stainless steel piping

Stainless steel tubing is durable but very expensive, even more expensive than copper tubing. They are used in areas prone to corrosion such as coastal environments. This material offers the following advantages:

Strong and corrosion resistant

Pipes can be made flexible or rigid

Available in multiple sizes and lengths

Cast iron pipes

Cast iron pipe is usually manufactured in bell and spigot types and is the heaviest of all plumbing pipes. They are very durable and allow PVC to be used to replace parts of a cast iron piping system. However, cast iron pipes are very heavy and require additional supports during installation.

Some common applications of cast iron pipe are water distribution systems and underground installations such as B. the main pipes of drainage and sewage systems.

Gray Plastic Polybutylene (PB) Tubing

This plumbing material is inexpensive and easy to install, but prone to leaks.

High-density polyethylene (HDPE) piping

HDPE is a flexible material that offers corrosion resistance and durability. However, this comes at a price, and HDPE is more expensive than PVC.

brass pipes

Brass has long been used in plumbing, even before copper. When using this material, a critical requirement is that the alloy does not contain lead. Gunmetal pipe is considered the best option as it contains a high percentage of copper.

ADVANTAGES DISADVANTAGES Very corrosion resistant

heat resistant

Soft material that allows tight closures

Physical properties similar to copper

Long life May contain lead.

Brass tubing is commonly used in water supply lines, water intake drains, pump fittings, water tanks and wells.

Polypropylene piping (PP)

Polypropylene pipe is a rigid plastic pipe similar to CPVC. However, they are not joined with chemicals, instead heat is used to glue the mating ends together.

PP is commonly used in Europe and hasn’t received much attention in the US.

PP is durable, safe for humans and considered an environmentally friendly material.

The main disadvantage is a complex installation process that requires special tools.

PP piping is commonly used in hot and cold water supplies and drains.

Conclusion

With the wide variety of piping materials available, selecting the right conduit for a project can be a difficult decision. What Raw Materials Are Used To Manufacture PVC Pipes?

The raw materials required for the production of PVC pipes are PVC resin, DOP, stabilizers, processing acids, lubricants, colors and fillers. Electricity and water are also required.

Manufacturing process of PVC pipes

extrusion

For the production of PVC pipes, the unmixed PVC resin, like other thermoplastics, is not suitable for direct processing. Additives must be mixed with PVC resin for process and stability. These are some additives used in the manufacturing process of rigid PVC pipe: DOP, DIOP, DBP, DOA, DEP.

Plasticizers – common plasticizers are DOP, DIOP, DBP, DOA, DEP, Reoplast, Paraplex etc.

Stabilizers – The common stabilizers are lead, barium, cadmium, tin, stearate, etc.

Lubricants – Lubricants used are butyric stearates, glycerol monostearate, epoxidized monoester of oleic acid, stearic acid, etc.

Fillers – Fillers are used in the manufacture of a special quality product such as calcined clay.

Before starting the process, the PVC resin is mixed with plasticizers, stabilizers, lubricants and fillers to improve the process and the stability of the product. The ingredients and PVC resin are mixed in a high speed mixer.

The compound resin is fed into the twin-screw extruder, where the inserts and die for the required diameter are fitted. The PVC compounds are then passed through a heated chamber and melted under the compression of the screw and the heat of the barrel. In the latter case, the marking is made at the time of extrusion.

sizing

The tubes coming from the extruder are cooled in the calibration process. Two types of sizing are used. Pressure dimensioning and vacuum dimensioning.

traction

The next process after sizing is traction. The tube pulling unit is required for the continuous transport of tubes that are extruded by the extruder.

Cut

The last process is cutting. There are two types of PVC pipe cutting techniques: manual and automatic. The pipes are then checked for ISI test marks and are ready for dispatch.

Now put together the right vehicle for transporting the PVC pipes to the distributors.

Indoor plumbing has been around for a long time and the materials used for the pipes have seen many changes. For decades, metal and ceramics were the most common pipe materials. Many homes today still have pipes made of galvanized steel, clay, or even cast iron. Beginning in the 1970s, copper replaced galvanized steel and is now the most commonly used metal in plumbing systems.

However, plastic pipes play an important role in plumbing. Various types of water and sewer pipes made of plastic are easier to work with compared to copper. The first plastic pipes were used in the 1930’s and by the 1960’s they were becoming increasingly popular with plumbers thanks to advances in plastic manufacturing which made these pipes more useful in general.

There is no single type of plastic used to make pipes. For years, a gray plastic called polybutylene was common for plumbing systems, but it is no longer used because it cracks and causes leaks. If you have old polybutylene pipe in your home, we strongly recommend that you have it replaced with a newer type of plastic pipe. Here are the three types of plastic water pipe commonly used by plumbers today:

3 common types of plastic pipes

Polyvinyl chloride (PVC)

This is the material you are probably most familiar with and it performs a number of functions in a household aside from plumbing. Most water mains are made of PVC. It is not as flexible as some other types of plastic and because it warps at high temperatures (hotter than 140°F) it is not used for hot water pipes or in kitchen applications. This kind of plastic water pipe does not corrode and has low thermal conductivity.

Chlorinated Polyvinyl Chloride (CPVC)

These are PVC pipes that have undergone chlorination (treatment with chlorine). CPVC is more durable than PVC at higher temperatures and pressures and is common in industrial plumbing. For households, it is excellent for transporting potable water and handling hot water pipes where PVC is not suitable. CPVC is also more flexible. However, it cracks when it freezes, so CPVC is not suitable for water pipes, as these pipes must be buried in the ground.

Cross-linked polyethylene (PEX)

Plumbers often use PEX in home plumbing systems due to its many benefits. This type of plastic water pipe is useful for both hot and cold water applications and is the most popular fresh water pipe in kitchens and bathrooms. PEX is very flexible, so it fits in most spaces and is inexpensive and easy to work with. It comes in a variety of colors, making it easier for installers to identify hot and cold lines for future work. However, due to their flexibility, they need support.

How pipes are made in factory?

Seamless pipe is made when square steel billets are heated and moulded into cylinder shapes called “rounds”. The round is heated to white-hot in a furnace and rolled under high pressure. As the billet stretches out a hole forms in the centre and a bullet-shaped piercer point is pushed through.

PVC Pipe Fitting Injection Molding Machine

Seamless or welded steel tubes

The oil and gas industry uses steel pipes of various sizes to store and transport hydrocarbons. These tubes are either seamless, formed from a block of steel that is heated and pierced, or welded, from long flat pieces of steel bent into a tubular shape and sealed along the seam. Both tube types go through three processes – first, raw steel is converted into a more workable form, then tubes are manufactured on a production line at a tube mill, and finally, tubes are cut and modified to the customer’s requirements.

flowers and plates

In the initial stages of pipe making, iron ore and coke are melted, blasted with oxygen to remove the carbon, and poured into molds to produce crude steel ingots. Ingots are further processed through rolling to produce “blooms” that become the billets that become seamless tubing and “slabs” that become welded tubing.

Welded Pipe

Once the steel is formed into slabs, it is further processed by heating, coating, descaling and rolling and formed into narrow ribbons called skelp. The skelp is coiled and processed into a welded tube.

Electric Resistance Welding (ERW)

The steel skelp is unrolled and heated, then passed through grooved rollers, causing the ends to curl up and form the tubular shape. The unwelded tube is passed through welding electrodes – the metal resists the current creating heat and molten pools where the edges come into contact and this process forms the weld.

High Frequency Induction Welding (HFI)

HFI welding is similar to ERW but uses an induction coil to generate the current. HFI welded tubing is considered more suitable for use in the oil and gas industry as the process produces a stronger and better quality weld that is better suited to tubing under high fatigue and stress conditions.

Longitudinal Submerged Arc Welding (LSAW)

Submerged arc longitudinal welding is a process in which the weld and the arc zone are “submerged” under a layer of meltable flux. Formed from steel plate rather than coils, LSAW tubing is used for tubing larger than 24 inch diameter or for extra heavy wall tubing.

Seamless tube

Seamless tubing is produced when square billets of steel are heated and formed into cylindrical shapes called “rounds”. The round is heated white-hot in a furnace and rolled under high pressure. As the billet expands, a hole is formed in the center and a spherical piercing tip is pushed through. Larger diameter tubes then go through the mandrel rolling process where, after piercing, the tube shell is rolled through a mandrel mill with mandrel bars inside. This process creates a more standard outside diameter (OD) and controlled wall thickness (WT). Smaller diameter tubing is manufactured using the plug mill process.

Use in the oil and gas industry

All of these tube types are used throughout the oil and gas industry. Seamless tubing is popular because the lack of seams indicates fewer stress points and it has superior mechanical strength. They can also be molded into more precise and predictable forms. However, seamless tubes are significantly more expensive than welded tubes and have long delivery times because they are manufactured in very few places. Although the seam in a welded pipe is a potential weak point, constant advances in welding technology have greatly improved quality. Welded tubes also have more consistent wall thickness and much shorter delivery times.

Why is chlorine used in PVC?

It’s the additional chlorine molecules that protect the polymer’s carbon backbone, which in turn protects its structural integrity against heat. The increased heat resistance allows CPVC to perform at higher operating pressures than PVC.

PVC Pipe Fitting Injection Molding Machine

Chlorinated polyvinyl chloride (CPVC), first marketed by Lubrizol in the early 1960’s, has proven its value in a variety of industrial applications where high service temperatures, high pressure, and resistance to corrosion and microbes are required.

CPVC is recognized as an important engineering thermoplastic because of the following properties:

High glass transition temperature

High heat resistance

Chemical inertness

Outstanding mechanical, dielectric, flame and smoke properties

Relatively low manufacturing and installation costs

Today, Lubrizol’s CPVC compound is compounded and sold under three brand names:

What is the raw material of CPVC pipe?

Raw Materials Used in CPVC Piping

Ethylene is extracted from petroleum that is put in a special facility called a cracker. Manufacturers then react these two materials together to form a new liquid chemical: ethylene dichloride (EDC).

PVC Pipe Fitting Injection Molding Machine

We often get questions from industrial engineers about CPVC products – including what goes into making CPVC, why it’s better than other materials, and ultimately, where can CPVC products be purchased?

In the development and production of industrial CPVC, each step is critical – from raw material to PVC, PVC to CPVC and CPVC to finished product. The highest quality CPVC products available outperform generic alternatives as a result of innovation and quality control from start to finish.

The table below is included for easy reference of the CPVC development and production process.

Raw Materials for CPVC Piping

All CPVC products used in industrial equipment today—such as pipe, fittings, sheet metal, and duct—started out as two separate materials: chlorine and ethylene.

Chlorine is one of the by-products of chlor-alkali salt processing. Ethylene is derived from petroleum that is placed in a special facility called a cracker. Manufacturers then react these two materials together to form a new liquid chemical: ethylene dichloride (EDC).

Then EDC is dehydrated through an oxychlorination process, heated and finally decomposed into vinyl chloride monomer (VCM).

Vinyl chloride has no real use in its monomeric form as it is an unstable chemical intermediate and is gaseous under normal conditions. It must be stored under pressure to maintain a liquid state.

The vinyl chloride monomer must be converted into a polymer – a chain of monomers – to become strong, stable, and useful. To do this, manufacturers polymerize VCM in a high-pressure reactor to form polyvinyl chloride – or PVC.

Manufacturers produce the PVC resin and ship it to manufacturing facilities like Corzan Industrial Systems, where the PVC is used to make CPVC. PVC manufacturers can also supply the pellets to PVC manufacturers to be molded into finished PVC products.

PVC becomes CPVC

Corzan Industrial Systems turns PVC into CPVC. You can see our part of the process in the graphic above, outlined by the dotted line.

PVC is popular because it is strong and malleable. Manufacturers can heat it and process it into all sorts of products such as: B. Pipes, casings, cable insulation, signs and more.

To build on these benefits in CPVC, the PVC homopolymer undergoes a chlorination reaction. The chlorine (C2) and PVC resin react via a basic free radical mechanism, typically initiated by thermal and/or UV energy.

The diagram below shows the molecular difference between CPVC (left) and PVC (right), with the increase in large chlorine atoms (red) showing the increased protection of the carbon backbone.

In PVC, chlorine atoms occupy 25% of the binding sites, the rest being filled by hydrogen. In contrast, the CPVC carbon backbone has about 40% of the binding sites filled with chlorine. The increase in large chlorine molecules is key to protecting the backbone from decomposition.

The most noticeable change from PVC to CPVC is its heat deflection temperature and compressive strength at elevated temperatures. PVC is pressure rated for use up to 60°C (140°F), while CPVC is rated for use up to 93.3°C (200°F). When industrial processing applications involve higher temperatures and/or higher pressures, CPVC can be used.

Learn more about how PVC and CPVC compare and contrast in this blog post.

After the CPVC resin is formed from the PVC, Corzan Industrial Systems blends it with additives that enhance other inherent properties, such as: B. the UV weather resistance.

Finally, the CPVC compound is manufactured as granules or powder. CPVC resin manufacturers — like Corzan Industrial Systems — make compounds for partner manufacturers that make pipe, fittings, sheet metal and more. Resin manufacturers must produce compounds that meet partner manufacturers’ applications and manufacturing requirements.

Melting CPVC resin into finished products

There are two common methods of manufacturing finished CPVC products: extrusion and injection molding.

CPVC extrusion

Extrusion is used to create long, continuous shapes such as tubes and sheets. In extrusion, manufacturers take CPVC powder and feed it to an extruder. The extruder melts it and pushes it through a nozzle head, which distributes it as evenly as possible and gives it its final shape. As the material then moves through the processing equipment downstream of the extruder, it is corrected to correct any imbalances.

The tubing or sheet is then cooled, hardened, cut and prepared for use – typically in 10 or 20 foot sections of tubing or 4 foot by 8 foot sheet (in North America).

Extrusion is efficient for the production of tube and sheet as the machine can run continuously as long as material is fed into the system until a new product size needs to be produced.

CPVC injection molding

To make the rest of the CPVC products available on the market – like fittings, valves, flange adapters – manufacturers use CPVC pellets for injection molding. They use machines (like the one in the picture below) with a hopper on top that feeds a set amount of CPVC into the system.

The system uses a high-pressure screw to melt and press the CPVC into the desired shape. After a few seconds of cooling, the CPVC is dropped from the mold in perfectly shaped, ready-to-use pieces.

CPVC manufacturer

Because Corzan Industrial Systems does not manufacture end products that are used in industrial equipment, we require each of our partner manufacturers to participate in our quality assurance program. The program ensures that end users receive the same consistency and quality of CPVC products regardless of when or where they were manufactured.

Who makes CPVC?

The company’s specialty chemicals division later became part of Lubrizol Advanced Materials, which includes BlazeMaster CPVC and its sister brands FlowGuard Gold and Corzan. Through the 1940s and 1950s, PVC was developed into rigid materials for pipes and other applications.

PVC Pipe Fitting Injection Molding Machine

BlazeMaster™ CPVC is ubiquitous in today’s fire protection systems—it’s the most specified sprinkler piping and fitting system of its kind in the world. But how did we get here? We’re proud that CPVC was invented in our labs, giving us a unique insight into the early days of these materials – and how we’ve worked to improve them over the decades.

It all started in 1938 when Waldo Semon of BFGoodrich’s specialty chemicals team was looking for a way to make synthetic rubber because natural rubber made from trees was becoming too expensive. While PVC had been discovered in the 19th century, no one had found a practical use for it until Semon discovered a plasticization technology. This was the invention of vinyl – a soft, rubbery material originally used as a water-resistant coating for fabrics. During World War II it was used to insulate cables on military ships.

The company’s specialty chemicals business later became part of Lubrizol Advanced Materials, which includes BlazeMaster CPVC and its sister brands FlowGuard Gold and Corzan.

In the 1940s and 1950s, PVC was developed into rigid materials for pipe and other applications. In 1942 chlorine was added to the materials for the first time and research and development continued until 1958 when PVC chlorination technology was patented. CPVC was born – a thermoplastic made from a base PVC polymer enriched with chlorine molecules and special additives that give it the ability to withstand intense heat and pressure.

The first field trials began in 1960 when CPVC pipe was installed in a trial home built by the National Association of Home Builders. The success of this project led to the start of commercial production in 1962. Over the next year, the company’s CPVC was incorporated into research houses in the Baltimore, Maryland area. More than 30 years later, a team was able to take samples of the plumbing from the houses and, unsurprisingly, found them to be in perfect condition.

The growth of BlazeMaster

The company entered the fire protection market in 1984 with the introduction of BlazeMaster CPVC. With its ease of installation, low maintenance and natural resistance to corrosion, it offered the market a viable alternative to steel tubing.

Originally, all of the company’s CPVC tubing products were made from a single compound. In the 1990s, researchers found ways to design compounds tailored for specific applications. For example, BlazeMaster CPVC was designed with increased strength to withstand the higher water pressures required in sprinkler systems.

BlazeMaster CPVC usage continued to grow in the 2000s because:

The company developed new listing improvements that made it possible to install CPVC pipe in basements, attics, and other applications.

Steel material cost exceeded CPVC tubing for the first time. This, combined with BlazeMaster’s simple solvent-based solution that streamlines installation, helped increase CPVC’s cost advantage.

Sales of BlazeMaster CPVC expanded globally to markets in Europe, Latin America and Asia.

The FBC™ System Compatibility Program was established in 2002 to ensure ancillary products such as thread sealants and lubricants are chemically compatible with all brands of Lubrizol tubing.

Global growth brought investments in production facilities. In 2014, Lubrizol embarked on a $400 million global expansion of its CPVC resins and compounds manufacturing capacity.

And that brings us to where we are today. BlazeMaster CPVC is the clear market leader in providing fire protection solutions for a variety of applications around the world, from homes to offices to schools and hospitals and more.

So when you look up and see an orange whistle, you know it all started with Waldo Semon and his innovations many years ago. Today, his legacy lives on in fire protection systems around the world.

PVC Pipe Companies in India by Market Capitalization

Who owns JM Eagle?

Driving the defense has been the company’s owner and chief executive, Walter Wang, who has refused to settle. The company’s co-defendant, resin supplier Formosa Plastics, exited the lawsuit for $22.5 million and legal fees.

PVC Pipe Fitting Injection Molding Machine

It made headlines after the whistleblower suit against JM Eagle was unsealed, and three years later in 2013 after a jury found that the world’s largest plastic pipe manufacturer had made false claims about the quality of its products.

The Los Angeles company has been hooked by the law firm, which represents three states and 42 cities and water districts, for “billions of dollars” in potential damage due to leaking pipes that would need to be replaced “much sooner than expected.” the result of “sloppy manufacturing” and a focus on the bottom line.

For the record: In an earlier version of this story, attorney David Birka-White’s surname was misspelled as Burka-White.

Fourteen years after the lawsuit was filed, the Los Angeles Federal Court judge who is presiding over the case returned his own verdict last month on what five cities and counties selected to have their cases heard first are entitled to: zero.

“There is no ‘real’ evidence of defects in the pipe,” U.S. District Judge George H. Wu ruled in a 67-page decision noting that the plaintiffs failed to excavate and test the pipe in question . “It is undisputed that they have not stopped using this pipe and thereby (for many years) receive, retain and continue to receive value.”

The ruling didn’t end the dispute, but it did deal a major blow to the plaintiffs in the lengthy legal saga that a JM Eagle attorney said posed an “existential” threat to the company — and has been fought accordingly. The company sued the plaintiffs’ attorneys twice, once for racketeering and another for defamation, cases that were dismissed on appeal. Along the way, it has hired several of its own lawyers and spent what it describes as “the equivalent of a huge fine” to fight the allegations.

The defense was pushed by the company’s owner and CEO, Walter Wang, who has refused to settle. The company’s co-defendant, resin supplier Formosa Plastics, dropped out of the lawsuit for $22.5 million and attorneys’ fees. But Wang, the son of the late Taiwanese billionaire who founded Formosa and JM Eagle’s predecessor company, said he was determined to fight to the end.

“I don’t want to settle because I didn’t do anything wrong. This is under my direct supervision. When I settle down, it’s not about money. It’s about ruining [my] whole reputation,” said Wang, a prominent Los Angeles businessman and philanthropist. “There was no way I could settle down, so I kept fighting and fighting. Even my sister and brother-in-law said to me, ‘Walter, you have to have an exit strategy.'”

Wang said he felt vindicated by the judge’s decision, but said it was too early for the company to celebrate. Plaintiffs are expected to appeal the verdict, and JM Eagle is still facing a class action lawsuit, which is proceeding on a separate track despite the whistleblower verdict.

Both types of cases can lead to high honors. Among the big-money whistleblower cases of recent years was one in which GlaxoSmithKline agreed to pay $3 billion in 2012 to settle all criminal and civil wrongdoing claims, including promoting off-label use his prescription drugs. Bank of America has agreed to pay $2.43 billion to settle a class action lawsuit with investors related to its acquisition of Merrill Lynch & Co. amid the financial crisis.

Eric Havian, lead counsel for plaintiffs in the whistleblower case, said Wu’s decision “effectively created a catch-22” for the water utilities because “they were sold substandard pipes in the first jury’s verdict.”

“However, since it’s buried underground and the cost of digging it up would require shutting down the water system for a few weeks or maybe even longer to exhume and test it, you can’t take any harm,” said Havian, who claims that only a “sample” of pipes would hold up in court.

Havian also disputed that there was no real-world evidence of JM Eagle pipe failures involving the plaintiffs, including one that occurred in the Calleguas Municipal Water District in Thousand Oaks. Wu didn’t allow it to be heard in court, he said, because the pipe was installed outside the timeframe of the lawsuit, which is undisputed. A JM Eagle representative also claims that the failure may have been caused by poor installation or pressure surges.

During pipe installation in Reno in 2002, an error occurred that was heard in court. The company representative said the cracks were caused by air pockets during pressure tests that were improperly conducted by the city. However, he acknowledged that JM Eagles’ investigation of the incident discovered a defect in a piece of pipe, allowing the company to honor its warranty and replace everything.

Havian said it was a clear example of a “bad” whistle and he expects the issue of failure to be addressed on appeal. He also said that nothing prevents the litigation from continuing with other plaintiffs.

The damages case relied on the plaintiffs’ experts, who developed an elaborate design model – based on JM Eagle’s internal testing – and claimed the pipe could fail sooner than if it met standards. A jury hearing testimonies hung on the damages issue in November 2018, prompting the company to ask Wu to make its own decision. Wu dismissed the expert testimony, noting that the analysis was untested and lacked peer review, among other shortcomings.

John Nockleby, a Loyola Law School professor who has written on tort law, said Wu appears to have settled for just one sample large enough to test — although an expert would then have to create a longevity test.

“I don’t know if such a test would be feasible, but the court seemed to be looking for such evidence,” said Nockleby, who described the decision as a “complete victory for the defendant.”

The litigation began in 2006 when Phillips & Cohen, a leading whistleblowing law firm of which Havian was a partner at the time, filed a complaint on behalf of the federal government, several states and numerous municipalities, as well as a former quality assurance engineer at JM Eagle who said, he was fired after raising questions about the quality of the company’s whistle.

The lawsuit, which covered tubing manufactured from 1996 to 2006, accused JM Eagle of using inferior resins and other raw materials, overspeeding its tube-making machines, and “picking out” tubing for testing to certifying agencies in its pursuit of profit To deceive. according to a second amended version of the complaint.

In the years leading up to the unsealing of the first case in 2010, the federal government investigated the whistleblower’s complaint alleging violations of the False Claims Act, a Civil War-era law designed to ensure the military was not provided with substandard goods from suppliers sold. It allows private whistleblowers to receive up to 30% of the damages in certain cases.

The government eventually decided not to pursue the case, nor did California or several other states under their own false allegation laws — as JM Eagle pointed out in his defense. Havian said that’s because the pipe was largely purchased by local governments and water districts. He also notes that the federal government investigator testified on behalf of the plaintiffs.

The first trial, conducted over two months in 2013, was reduced to five “model” plaintiffs — the city of Palmdale, the Thousand Oaks water area, and public water utilities in Virginia and Nevada, including Reno — with the rest considered later. According to a PowerPoint presentation in court filings, which Havian said was shown during the closing arguments, the plaintiffs produced emails and documents from the company raising questions about pipe quality and presented internal test results they claimed were used during the course would have decreased over time.

The company says the plaintiffs seized the results of tests on tubes under development or used to diagnose manufacturing problems. It has also accused whistleblower John Hendrix of being a disgruntled employee who was fired after he requested a bribe payment from a customer who had complained about receiving a bad pipe – and produced a signed affidavit from the customer, in which Hendrix asked him to seek a larger settlement and give him a portion of the proceeds.

Hendrix, who was involved in the Formosa settlement, was not available for comment but has previously denied the allegations. Havian called them wrong.

Attorney David Bernick, representing the company in the damages case, said Havian took advantage of Wang’s efforts to build a company composed of aging factories acquired from other pipe companies, first Formosa and later Wang, who acquired the shares in 2005 from Formosa Plastics. He said the company essentially has a “very strong record” of compliance.

Havian “created an image of shoddy manufacture, essentially what it was,” Bernick said. “Yes, these plants had problems at certain points in time – different plants in different places. But that doesn’t mean these plaintiffs got a bad whistle.”

The jury in the first trial found that JM Eagle “knowingly” and “falsely violated consistent compliance” with standards of the American Water Works Assn. and UL – two major certification organizations – to the five plaintiffs who built 26 pipeline projects. As a result, JM Eagle is still liable for penalties of up to $260,000, a nominal amount compared to the potential damages the company feared.

The five cities and counties declined to comment or could not be reached for comment, or referred questions to their attorneys.

Following the initial judgment, Phillips & Cohen issued a press release announcing that the company may be “awarded damages in. billions” threatens chloride (PVC) pipe.”

JM Eagle was sued for defamation and trade defamation. His interpretation of the ruling is that the company was found not to produce every single stick of its whistle to industry standards, a benchmark no company could match.

A California appeals court ruled in favor of the law firm, ruling that the publication was protected speech, and describing “the substantial evidence presented at trial and JM’s decades-long policy of emphasizing production quotas over quality control, essentially unchallenged by JM as well as The Specific.” Jury findings that JM knowingly misrepresented its PVC was manufactured and tested to ensure it had the strength and durability required by applicable industry standards.

A spokesman for JM Eagle indicated that the opinion was not unanimous and that the majority only summarized, not substantiated, the evidence presented by the plaintiffs. He also said the appeals court found in its opinion that the trial court found that it was not legally true that JM Eagle was held liable for the manufacture and sale of faulty water mains. He said Wu’s decision in the whistleblower case further supports this point.

Havian was also sued for racketeering by the company, who accused him of helping Hendrix copy emails, record conversations, and otherwise illegally gather evidence. A New Jersey appeals court ruled that the dispute should be settled in Wu’s court as part of the whistleblower case.

“The whole legal battle was scorched earth,” Havian said. “I’ve never had a case where I’ve been sued by a defendant for racketeering or anything else. They never gave up. You will never give up.”

After losing the first trial, JM Eagle brought in Bernick, a high-profile trial attorney and former Philip Morris general counsel, for the damages phase. Bernick said the case posed an existential threat to the company, although Wang said it sells enough pipes a year to circumnavigate the globe several times – with just 0.1% showing defects, 70% of which can be traced back to installation .

“It’s all a disaster in only one place, which is in federal court in the Central District of California and in the eyes of the plaintiffs,” Bernick said.

The class action faces a certification hearing, which would essentially determine whether there is a class of plaintiffs with common claims that are best resolved collectively rather than individually. It is open to private buyers of JM Eagle tubing and government agencies in more than two dozen states.

Lawyers for the plaintiffs filed an updated complaint last month following the whistleblower ruling at the request of Wu, who is also leading the class action lawsuit. Even if he grants the certification, there would have to be a jury trial, which could result in damages.

“We’re going to try to build a model of what this company should give back,” said David Birka-White, the class action’s lead counsel, who noted that Wu had issued a preliminary ruling in favor of the class certification in 2012 before the whistleblower trials.

Bernick said Wu’s recent decision not to award damages dealt a serious blow to the class action lawsuit. “The class action lawsuit is kind of tag-along,” he said.

However, Nockleby cautioned that the class action will assert causes of action unrelated to the whistleblower case – such as false advertising – and seek punitive damages, so it “is not bound by the same limitations on damages.”

Wang acknowledged that the lawsuit had damaged the company’s reputation, particularly after the whistleblower lawsuit was unsealed and later after the initial verdict. He declined to comment on the company’s finances but said it lost business and was unable to sell in the Nevada and Virginia markets. “Our reputation hasn’t been shaken, but it has been damaged,” he said.

Whatever the damage, JM Eagle is still the world’s largest plastic pipe manufacturer, according to a February report by IBISWorld. It said the company had a 12.4% share of the US market, almost twice the size of its closest competitor. The report, which was completed before the coronavirus outbreak was in full swing, projected that JM Eagle would grow sales to $2.5 billion this year.

The company could potentially appeal and settle the class action by agreeing to a settlement. Wang said that will not happen after 14 years. “Absolutely not,” he said.
