4 Reminders For Anxious,Depressed Creatives — James Griffin Cole
In her book Aesthetic Intelligence, author Pauline Brown said: “Computers can and will solve more and more functional problems; They cannot and will not be able to find new and meaningful ways to reconnect us with our humanity.”
That, my friend, is where creatives come in. Whether you are a photographer, writer, graphic artist, podcaster, musician or marketer, the pursuit of creative endeavor can never be replaced by technological advancement. Art and imagination exist only at the core of who we are as human beings. However, if you’re an innovator of any kind, you probably already know how uncomfortable it can be to dive into yourself, especially if you’re struggling with anxiety or depression.
So here are 4 reminders for all anxious/depressed creatives to hopefully offer you some inspiration, comfort and of course support.
4 reminders for anxious, depressed creatives
you are not your thoughts
It’s no secret that in a dark or lonely place, your thoughts can feel quite consuming. No matter how down you feel, it’s important to remember that you are not one of the thousands of thoughts running through your head every day. And yet it goes without saying that no matter how hard you try to rationalize or downplay an uncomfortable rumination, it’s still damn hard to ignore.
In an effort to take care of yourself as best you can during these times, try to remember that up to this point, you’ve managed to overcome, overcome, and get past every negative thought you’ve had in your life to see him.
So chances are good that you will have the opportunity to do it again. It may suck, but with compassion for yourself, you’ll find the strength to remember (and maybe even believe one day) that those meaningless thoughts are just that: meaningless.
It is darkest before dusk.
Sure, that line might sound cliche, but it’s also very true. When we feel like things can’t get any worse, we’re usually on the verge of turning the corner into something better. Unfortunately, we’ll have to be prepared to go through the tough stuff long enough to enjoy this much-anticipated turning point.
For anxious/depressed creatives, it can be pretty easy to get stuck in a personal or professional rut. After all, we are human. However, what sets the creative apart from the rest of the populace is their ability to take that struggle and make something great out of it. And so, in a way, darkness not only precedes dawn, it facilitates it. When times get tough, remember to persevere because greatness may be just around the corner.
You’re not alone.
Do you know how many Americans struggle with anxiety and depression? For generalized anxiety, which is currently the most common mental illness in the country, the number is around 40 million. Similarly, in 2017 it was reported that an estimated 17.3 million adults in the United States had at least one major depressive episode. Not to mention that nearly half of those diagnosed with depression are also diagnosed with an anxiety disorder.”
So why am I telling you this? Because the proof is in the pudding. There are literally millions of Americans who battle anxiety and depression every day. So if there is one great thing that can be said about this form of struggle, it is that we are not alone in this.
Sure, only you can feel exactly what you’re feeling. But if you take the time to open up to others, you will find that for every pain you endure, there is someone else out there fighting a similar struggle. That being said, it’s enabling a sense of community around our pain that helps anxious/depressed creators become so damn successful.
As humans, we long for a sense of community. Whether it’s through an art exhibition or a book about your experiences, “your people” (who are also affected by struggles) will find your work and be thankful for it.
Sometimes you have to turn your pain into your purpose.
There is a quote from Henri Matisse that goes: “Creativity takes courage. “And when it comes to anxious/depressed creatives, I don’t think a truer word has ever been spoken. In fact, I can’t think of a bolder endeavor than finding a way to turn a fight into a calling. In life we are always faced with choices and when anxiety or depression strikes the situation is the same.
We have the option to throw in the towel and allow it to swallow us whole, or we can ride the wave as it comes and find a way to make sense of the pain we are enduring. Whether you write, paint, podcast, or design, the simple decision to “act” is a heroic act in itself, not only because it gives you space to move through your pain in a healthy way, but because it allows you to it is empowering you to make a difference.
There are literally thousands (if not millions) of people in the world who suffer from anxiety and depression every day and are unable to do anything about their pain. And if what you create brings them comfort, wouldn’t you say your struggle has served a purpose?

For any anxious/depressed creative reading this, I hope you know that what you do and the imagination you create with, even right in the middle, is more than important, it has the power to close the world change.
From Pauline Brown’s point of view, aesthetics (something we as creators tend to provide) is what helps keep the world’s biggest brands in business. On a more intimate level, your work can touch someone who later heals cancer or just learns to love themselves.
Very few people and even fewer professions have the ability to make such a connection. So yes, while anxiety and depression are burdens no one wants to carry, they can also empower you to think differently, find empathy for those around you, and ultimately make a difference.
