Arctic Renewable Energy Atlas
Arctic Renewable Energy Atlas (http://arcticrenewableenergy.org/)
A supported project by the Arctic Council Working Group on Sustainable Development, co-led by the United States and Canada
Overview: To contribute to sustainable development and healthy, resilient communities in the Arctic, the Arctic Council Working Group on Sustainable Development (SDWG) has initiated work on an Online Atlas of Renewable Energy in the Arctic (AREA) http://arcticrenewableenergy .org/ added. AREA provides resource maps for solar, wind, geothermal, marine and hydrokinetics in one easily accessible website. AREA will also overlay existing power generation capacity to enable easy visualization of local supply and demand, encouraging clean energy quests and investments. In an effort to profile and share best practices from traditional and local knowledge, AREA will add videos of Arctic community stakeholders discussing achievements and challenges in developing clean energy projects. AREA is available free of charge to the Arctic public, investors, policymakers, researchers and public officials to raise awareness of energy efficiency opportunities and the development potential of renewable energy. By combining multi-layered data visualization and fostering local solutions, AREA will expand the ability of Arctic residents and scientists to manage and respond to future challenges and opportunities.
Description of activity: Stakeholders across the Arctic have highlighted the need to share scientific data, research and development, and local knowledge to promote the use of renewable energy and energy efficiency to meet their energy needs. By bringing together maps, resource data, research activities and storytelling into a single tool, AREA will improve knowledge of best practices and local adaptation measures for renewable energy in the Arctic region. AREA components:
Alaska Center for Energy and Power (ACEP)
ACEP has published a pre-release draft of the Arctic Energy Atlas. The Atlas is a product that provides information on energy resources, infrastructure and access throughout the Arctic.
This atlas was created in collaboration with researchers from the University of Saskatchewan.
The atlas data will be officially released in early 2022 and will be accompanied by a research paper to be submitted for peer review. Currently, the map shows the location of renewable energy systems, including regional grids and off-grid communities, across the Arctic. It also outlines the boundary between the continental grid system and a new functional definition of the northern regions with electricity, an area dubbed the “Electric Arctic”.
This work builds on the original map of Arctic off-grid communities developed by ACEP in partnership with the University of Saskatchewan. It is a compilation of various data sets including the Global Power Plant, the Global Power System and The Atlas of Canada – Remote Communities Energy Database.
